Alright, so we know a few guys remain in play for the defensive coordinator position:
a.) Manny Diaz from Mississippi State, who was first contacted either last Sunday or Monday and who has exhibited more than token interest in the job.
b.) Todd Grantham from Louisville (and Georgia before that), who also has more than token interest in the job.
Now we can add Georgia Tech defensive coordinator TED ROOF to the fray. He was contacted early last week and has interest in the job, we're told by two people with knowledge of the situation. He served under Gene Chizik from 2009-2011 and was dismissed in the post-2011 scapegoat scramble. Roof landed on his feet at Penn State under Bill O'Brien and then moved back to his alma mater, Georgia Tech, for the 2013 season.
Roof's defenses at Tech have run the gamut: Very good in 2013, below average in 2014, maybe one click above average this fall.
Malzahn and Roof worked together for three seasons ('09, '10 and '11) ... and worked well together.
We're told Malzahn's initial impression was that Roof wasn't interested in leaving his alma mater, but either Roof's feelings changed or Malzahn misinterpreted things. Either way, Roof is a real possibility here at this stage.
