🧑‍🍳 Breakfast, Mom and Pop Places

We have a place right on Hwy 431 South of Wedowee. Lulu Ole Time Country Kitchen. Breakfast at anytime, breakfast bar, lunch bar too. Menu if you need it. We have know the owner for over 15+ years.

Good question.

In my area there are so many little "communities" within the larger one. IE: West Ashley is in Charleston, but you don't say "let's go eat in Charleston" and go to West Ashley.
So, I thought about this and I'll start with Park Circle: "The Junction." It's like a lot of places in that community; I hit there for certain menu items.

They made me the laugh the first time in. "The Boring" is one of their plates: two eggs, meat of your choice, and hashbrowns. ALL of those are good...but, the name says it all.

Here's my go to:

I'll mention two, both near me in Kennesaw.

Doug's Place, Emerson, Georgia. That's about ten or twelve miles up Highway 41 from me in Kennesaw, before you get to Cartersville. Doug passed away a few years ago, and the place has gone through a major remodel, but it still has a good breakfast and lunch.

The second, Basecamp, is right next to Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park. Their food, for me the french toast, is crazy good. Their sister restaurant, The Local, is on Marietta Square and is a great lunch spot.

I really haven't found an enviable breakfast place near the lake, but Dock's Bar & Grill in Cropwell is my most regular place, and they have a decent Saturday brunch. The St. Clair and Tavern in Pell City does a nice brunch, too:

I will usually get their sirloin steak and eggs.

@It Takes Eleven that Tavern Steak Bowl at St. C ... looks good. Biscuit at Doug's does too...
Yeah, the St. Clair has been in business for a couple of years now, by far the nicest place in Pell City. I've not had anything bad there. They hit a lull after the initial buzz, but they seem to have hit their stride. Their business has picked up since the Outback opened, and the Longhorn and Olive Garden will open next year. I'm not sure they take much away from the local places, but rather folks aren't driving twenty miles to Oxford shop at the big box stores and eat at the locations there. A couple of years ago, we got our own big box plaza. The increase in sales tax revenue over the last ten years has really allowed the city to improve services and lure more business (like site prep for the Longhorn/Olive Garden plat), so I think the city has a bright future. They'd approved about 1,000 new homes since 2020, 750 already built, many in the patio/townhome R-3/R-4 designation. That's gotten many residents' attention, so they just paused approving any new high density building permits. Some places get popular so quickly that the density overwhelms them. Other places, just through blind luck, have an initial growth of large lot developments (two to five acre parcels), and then the density follows, so there is a good mix.

Not sure BBB qualifies as a mom and pop place anymore.
It's been redefined to an extent. It's not "mom and pop" as it is "Dolly Cook" that decides she wants to open her own restaurant: her's. Her menu, her layout, etc.

NOW. Here is the final word on BBB. It is now a tourist trap. It's box cutter. Not to the degree Checkers has become (you know, those are basically 'snap tight models' that can be moved.)

I had their creole omelet on day when I was downtown: pretty tasty.

(A half of an hour or more to drive and park here...just under 18 miles, I'll guess. It's on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston, bro! HELL to the NO that's mom and pop.)

Now, if you are downtown Charleston and you want to know somewhere to eat? ... I'll post that in a little while.

Ray's Restaurant in Dothan, AL. Straight up legit like out of the movies. Old timey diner, including the regulars that are old men who give free advice that's damn well worth listening to. Damn good breakfasts, and great lunches too!
1740 S. Oates St. (It's on your way to PCB if you come through Dothan.)
