| BSB/SB Bama hires Goff as new coach: Reports and Reactions

There has to be more help in recruiting, such as being stronger in the high school recruiting ranks, and supplementing the scholarships. I DO believe if we will pay what's necessary we can get a good coach to come, and we can be successful. Here's a decent article on possibilities:

The Hot Board: Where should Alabama look for its next baseball coach?

Only help Alabama baseball would or could get, would be more 2 sport guys like Keith Holcombe. He counts toward the 85 in football and is a "freebie" for baseball. Only other way is academic money. Giving a "full ride" in baseball is almost non existent.
I was once told by a prominent SEC baseball coach that, ( I was coaching a kid that wanted to play college ball, he eventually played college basketball but did throw out of the bullpen his last couple of years as well at BSC), if a kid is worth a full ride, he more often than not will NEVER step foot on campus, due to the fact the will be inside the first 10 rounds of the MLB draft. Most these kids will get will be is maybe 70-75% and that sends another kid toward another school.
Watching the tournament this week and noticed some Alabama kids on other rosters that either prove my point, proves our staff doesn't evaluate talent very well, or both! Kyle Wright, pitcher for Vandy was a Buckhorn High School grad and Chad Smith, pitcher for Ole Miss was a McAdory High School grad. Ole Miss has already signed a lefty pitcher from Corner High School (my old HS), by the name of Jackson Tavel. The kid throws 93-94!

As for the names in that article, all would be good possibilities with TCU coach as the top candidate. Battle would have to pursue him with an open wallet though and make it more than just a lateral move. The Dallas Baptist coach sounds good, but those numbers don't always translate to the SEC. Casey Dunn would do a good job, even though he is a Barner. I actually coached him in the Alabama Shriner's East-West All Star Baseball tournament after he graduated. Dave Magadan sounds is just a pipe dream.

There are rules to prevent giving "academic" scholarships for athletes. Some schools tried to do this in football to get around the 85 limit.

IMO, the schools need to fight the baseball limits. How does softball get a 12 scholarship limit and baseball get 11.7? Other sports get enough scholarships to field more than the starting lineup (football = 85, basketball = 13). Women's rowing is allowed 20 and I know that there aren't 20 women in any boat.

It goes back to Title IX once again. Everything has to be equal.:sarcasm:

Add the numbers for the sports provided both male and female. It sucks!!
Men- 11.7 baseball, 13 basketball, 12.6 cross country, 85 football, 4.5 golf, 9.9 swimming & diving, 4.5 tennis, and 12.6 track. Total= 153.9 scholarships.

Women- 15 basketball, 18 cross country, 6 golf, 12 gymnastics, 20 rowing, 14 soccer, 12 softball, 14 swimming & diving, 8 tennis, 18 track, and 12 volleyball. Total = 149 scholarships.
I have probably missed a sport or two, but it is all about EQUALITY!!

That men's total of 12.6 for cross is for track and cross COMBINED. 21 events in track. 21. Seven guys run a cc race. 12.6 schollys. If you get half a ride, the coach is expecting you to win at least a conference title.

So who do we cheer for in the tourney? I've got it narrowed down to maybe three:
Binghamton

South Alabama (Beat the Tide in a mid-week game 8-2. This team did not win their conference tournament.)

Maybe Oral Roberts

In all seriousness, Florida probably wins it all.

I say we field a wrestling team... and use a baseball GA (is there one?) to coach it.... and ... funny... every one of those wrestlers, while not so great at wresting [in fact, not one of them made it out of the first round of any of their matches without being pinned] is ALSO a BASEBALL player :).

Why wouldn't that work? There's 9.9 schollys that could be 'freebies' for baseball!!!

Alabama used to have a wrestling team but it was discontinued in the late 70s.

With all of this back and forth about scholarships, makes me wonder about kids like Tony Brown, Marlon Humphrey, and Kendall Sheffield. Do those guys count towards football or track? Saban knows how to work numbers!

As expected, BAMA gets left out of the CWS field. An OOC schedule ranking of 231 and then an abysmal showing in mid week games proved fatal. Any debate now as to whether Battle should look to replace Gaspard? I know the schedules were made out 2 years ago when Maryland and a couple of others were better, BUT midweek losses killed their chances.

Losing mid-week games. Looks like it will be tough to make the post season. Brand new stadium.

Gaspard seems like a really good guy. He's been in Tuscaloosa, what, seven years?

Who's the next great hire?

In the movie "Benny and Joon" Joon says, "The answer's in the question."

I don't see Gaspard making it. Glad I don't have to make that decision though.

University of Alabama baseball head coach Mitch Gaspard has resigned from his position effective immediately, Alabama Director of Athletics Bill Battle announced Monday afternoon.

"Mitch and I met last Friday to discuss how the season has gone and possibilities for postseason play," Battle said in a press release. "At that time, he expressed to me his wishes to resign as baseball coach.

"While that conversation was supposed to serve as a prelude to our annual postseason discussion on the state of the program, I accepted his resignation only on the basis that it would not officially be in effect until our season had formally concluded. It's clear to me that Mitch had made up his mind, and I respect his wishes.

Gaspard informed the Alabama team and his staff of his decision Monday afternoon. Gaspard accumulated a 234-193 (.548) record as Alabama’s head coach.

"In seven seasons as our head coach, Mitch always represented us with class," Battle said. "He always fielded highly competitive teams and always conducted our program the right way. He has always been guided by the right principles, the kind of values you seek in a head coach and mentor of young people.

"Mitch leaves the program in good shape. He was a major factor in us being able to rebuild Sewell-Thomas Stadium into the nation's finest baseball facility and his players have competed hard and handled themselves well on and off the field. I am most appreciative of the leadership Mitch has provided and his effort and drive to prepare our team to compete at the highest levels on and off the field.

"Mitch and his family - his wife, Kim, and his daughters, Brae and Paeton - have spent much of their lives as part of the Crimson Tide family. They are first-class people in every way and have been wonderful representatives not only of our baseball program, but our entire Athletics Department and The University of Alabama.

"As a coach and, more importantly, as a man, Mitch gave his all to our program. I have the highest respect for him and his family, and all of us wish them nothing but the best."

Gaspard's .548 winning percentage ranks among the 10 best winning percentages for Alabama baseball coaches.

"Last Friday afternoon, I notified our Director of Athletics, Bill Battle, of my intention to resign as head baseball coach at The University of Alabama at the conclusion of this season," Gaspard said in a press release. "It's a decision that has not been an easy one, but something that I have been considering for a while now.

"We have consistently fielded a competitive program in the nation's finest conference throughout our seven seasons at Alabama, but I feel this is the right time to make a change - not only for me, but for the program as a whole. I think a good foundation has been set for whoever takes over the program. And, with our new stadium, the chance to recruit at a high level is definitely there.

"I am thankful to so many people who made the opportunities that I have had possible. My family has been so incredibly devoted to me and my career, and I am looking forward to being able to spend more quality time with my wife and daughters as we embark on the next chapter of our life together.

"One of the special things about sports is the family bond you can develop over the course of your career. That has definitely been the case in my life, and will continue to be so. To our Alabama baseball family - our players and their families; our coaches and their families; and to all our fans and boosters who faithfully support the Crimson Tide, I want to express my undying gratitude for the privilege of leading your program."

Maybe you misunderstood me. I know what sport trumps the other. I'm wondering if Saban counts those 3 toward the 85 or does track count them?

They have football scholarships so they count towards football. It's a freebie for track. And, it's not an issue of Saban counting toward football. Each scholarship's allocation is out of the coach's hands.
