| FTBL Antonio Alfano no longer on roster, reported in the transfer portal

I mean yeah, more than likely he's going to have to sit sit this year but he'll still have four more years. He was going to have to sit wherever he goes, though. I highly doubt if he transferred to Rutgers tomorrow that the NCAA would offer up a waiver before November even. They drag their feet like crazy on that stuff.

Actually he'll have three. He's blown this year. If he transfers, he must sit out a year (unless he gets an NCAA exemption). That leaves three years left.

No, that is not how this works. Like at all. How has he "blown" this year? He has not played a single snap. If he transfers during the season he can use this year as his redshirt.

He can claim this year as a redshirt year, but if he transfers he must sit out the year. That's how it works. Most claim a transfer ineligible year as a redshirt year, but NCAA guidelines say you must sit out a year when your transfer (unless you're a graduate transfer).

I didn't suggest otherwise. You said he would have three years of eligibility left because he "blew" this year. That is not the case. You never "lose" a year of eligibility, by the way.

But it really is! His eligibility clock is ticking. He has 5 years to play 4. If he uses this year as a redshirt, now he has 4 left. Unless the NCAA totally goes stupid on this one ( that could happen but hasn't yet), he will be ineligible next year as well at his new school, leaving 3 years. Thus, a blown year.
Really, his best option would be to stay here if he wants to stick with football.

A player gets five years to play four (not including the rare medical sixth year). Here's how his years would play out:

Year 1 2019 - started school, didn't play, may transfer
Year 2 2020 - if he transfers, barring any NCAA intervention, he must sit out the year (can practice but can't play)
Year 3 2021 - eligible to play (unless he transfers again)
Year 4 2022 - eligible to play (unless he transfers again)
Year 5 2023 - eligible to play (unless he transfers again without graduating)

That's his five year clock

Why cant he just call this year his sit out? If he transfers immediately.....
Didnt Barnett do that? Played a couple games...but transferred....sat rest of year...played the next?

Could be wrong but thats way I remembered it

BB8 transferred to a JUCO. By transferring to a JUCO, if he graduated from the JUCO he could play immediately anywhere. BB8 went to JUCO, didn't play football, graduated and then went to Arizona State. He graduated from ASU and did a graduate transfer to South Florida. It's complicated, but he worked the system. If you remember, he was a redshirt freshman when Jalen Hurts was a true freshman. BB8 started the game against USCw and Jalen came in. Jalen is in his last year of eligibility (he's played in four years) and BB8 is in his fifth and final year.

No. His calendar has started. The NCAA has a "penalty" for transferring. Therefore he must sit out a year (unless there are special circumstances) regardless of what he's done this year. The NCAA doesn't want players to be eligible every year for transferring without penalty.

Whats the impact on this kid of Coach Saban publicly tagging him as a quitter? Not saying people would not draw that same conclusion but having the GOAT say it publicly was not expected. Privately maybe....

Unless he was to somehow figure a way to play the system, it is how it works. His clock is ticking. We were talking about him using this year as a redshirt year correct? Then transfer? NCAA is going to make him sit 1 year before coming eligible. That leaves him 3 years to play at his new school should he leave.

No, he's right since he hasn't participated in games this year, he can transfer without having to sit out a full year, so long as he is still able to take a redshirt, he can transfer and play next year.

1. What D1 school can still take a transfer?
2. Transferring requires you to sit out. Some use the sit out year as a redshirt year. Since his clock has already started, he misses this year and the required sit out year. Without that sit out year, players would be transferring every year.

No, people would not just transfer every year like this because this isn't normal.

It is not a penalty. It is a "reclamation period." You have to sit out a calendar year OR the equivalent of a school year (two semesters). As long as he transfers out in time for spring and takes full courses spring and summer he could use this year as his redshirt and be eligible next year. Shit, why are we arguing about this anyway? Who cares, he isnt playing at Alabama anymore.

Was considered.

Oh, most definitely. He did work hard in the offseason program when he arrived and looked like he had a lot of promise...until the summer months came along. He needed to get bigger in the S&C program. He lost weight. He needed to put more effort into what was going on with school and football. He chose to give less.

What were his expectations? We don't know what he was thinking but according to those around him he thought he was ready when he arrived. However, when he stopped doing what he was supposed to and regressed he fell down the depth charts. At best he was running with the 4's with a half of a dozen defensive lineman ahead of him.

JMO but Bama fans are more upset that another 5 star took the Greyhound out of T-town than the fact the guy had more stars than desire.
