The NCAA first instituted free substitution in 1973. Up to that time, you could substitute no more than two players on any play, which is why you used to see only the kicker and the holder come on the field on 4th down. But there was no rule that said the player coming on the field actually had to participate...and you could have more than 11 in the huddle. In 1973 or 1974, what injured Alabama QB spent most of the year running onto the field, giving the QB the play, and running off again?
