šŸˆ Alabama officially releases new coaching staff

PM Nugget | BamaInsider.com

Dropping some late January team nuggets and we begin with...

Butch Jones will visit with 5-star Alabama signee Trey Sanders tomorrow. This is interesting as few if anyone has reported that Jones is on the road recruiting for Alabama. So it looks like Jones will be part of this staff after all?

Well, not so fast my friends...

Current Alabama running backs coach Joe Pannunzio is expected to take a job with the Philadelphia Eagles. If that happens, Alabama will slide new Alabama assistant coach Charles Huff to coach the running backs. If Pannunzio sticks around and things fall through with the Eagles, Huff will coach the receivers, and Pannunzio will continue to coach the running backs.

If Pannunzio leaves and Huff is moved to coach the running backs, Alabama will hire a new receivers coach (Holmon Wiggins/Virginia Tech WR Coach will interview this week) and once Alabama hires a new receivers coach Butch Jones will not have a spot.

If Jones is not one of the 10th assistant coaches, expect him to stay on staff this season with an off the field role. A source tells me that Nick Saban really enjoys having Jones around because of his high level of attention to detail.

I know a lot of you have asked about Lance Taylor. Look, I know he was interviewed, not once, but twice by Alabama. I heard that he did not interview well. Maybe the second interview went better, but that is all I know about the situation.

New receivers coach candidate Holmon Wiggins

Wiggins will interview this week at Alabama and he looks to be a strong candidate for the receivers coach. Wiggins has been the receivers coach at Virginia Tech since 2016 and also coached the receivers at Memphis from 2012-15. In college, he was a three-year starter at New Mexico from 1998-2001 rushing for 1,833-yards.

Switching to the defense...

A source tells me that Coach Craig Kuligowski has been told to look elsewhere and that confirms what we heard in the previous 30-days regarding Coach Kool who coaches the defensive line at Alabama.

If Coach Kuligowski exits, a name to keep a close eye on is....

Freddie Roach

I had another source tell me that Saban wants to bring back Bo Davis. Saban wants Davis coaching the D-line plain and simple.

I think Panunzio was their coach in name last year but pretty sure it was Burton Burns in some fashion.
What would lead you to suggest that? Or, much less think that of Pannunzio?

That reads, literally, just like the story about Fulmer being suspended for five days for UT having someone outside the coaching staff working with players. Or, more specifically, you've just said "Bama's cheating."

I'm in full support of this

Understand that this can't happen until mid-April.

NCAA upholds penalty against former Alabama assistant Bo Davis

The NCAA denied an appeal from Bo Davis on Thursday and upheld a two-year show-cause penalty it placed upon the former Alabama assistant in April that runs through April 13, 2019.

According to an NCAA release, Davis argued that the show-cause order should expire two years from the date he resigned at Alabama, which was April 29, 2016, rather than two years from when the NCAA ruled on his case, which was this past April.

However, the penalty was upheld. That means Davis, who is now UTSA's defensive line coach, can't do any off-campus recruiting through April 13, 2019.

I assume that Nick can hire Bo until the show cause actually ends and not so much that he couldn't recruit off-campus until it ends. If true then Bama would go through spring drills without a (end game ) DL coach.

I believe the cow college actually hired Bruce Pearl while his show cause was in effect. I am sure Nick and all the U of A folks will run this past the NCAA for a solid process that wouldn't bring folks to T-town.

If Bo Davis can't recruit off-campus, then what is the hold up on getting his ass here and have him burn up the phone lines and texting these kids? Maybe CNS doesn't want him back near as bad as what the fanbase thinks. Or it could be that he is waiting for Kool to find another gig so he is allowed to save face. js

Got some breaking news for you Terry - Everyone in CF is cheating.

But to answer your specific question - In the training days series the RB's are watching videos with Panunzio and the RB's are literally saying "He says we should....." and Panunzio is just going with it. That peeked my interest.

Look back at JP's coaching history, where do you see him as a RB guru? I can't find him ever coaching RB's in his bio. Special teams and player personnel seems to be his specialties.

Regarding the Lance Taylor guy... I see he’s the WR coach of our Panthers. That’s not something to list on a resume. Our best receiver this year was a RB. He was 2nd best last year in his rookie year as a RB. And a TE is arguably our second best reciever when healthy.

Something that might be overlooked. A huge key to Clemson’s success is keeping a strong DC for many years. I know we get tired of hearing his names in some games but he is a stud and must just refuse to leave Dabo. Hell, he’d have to get a huge head coaching offer to make more than what he’s making, but having him so long is huge.

All that Dabo keeps his coaching staff is BS. What they should say NOBODY other than their DC has been offered a HC position and even their DC has only had offers from the little sisters of the poor.

Do you think Nick could keep Kirby,Locks and Pruitt from going from 1.5 million to 3.5 million just because they like Nick? I am sure a position coach at Clemson will stick with Dabo instead of increasing doubling there salary but 1st they have to get an offer. Nick had no problem taking Chris Rump from the fighting Dabo's when Bo leave T-town.

You’re adding words to what I said. He’s kept one coach around, didn’t say multiple. And that coach is a stud, just like I said. Does he want to be a head coach? Who knows. I’ve had Clemson folks tell me he wants to hang around there and hopes to take the reigns some day. Probably speculation. But do all coaches want to be head coaches, like you insenuate? I’d wager not. He’s stayed there, for whatever reason, and built a solid D for several years in a row. Arguably better than our D this year.

Now to your question... No. But do you know for a fact that Venables hasn’t had an offer that would raise his pay? I don’t. But whatever the reason he’s stayed, he’s stayed and it’s paid huge dividends. Was I placing blame on CNS for not keeping guys? No... I simply stated a huge part of their success is keeping him around for so long to run defense. Do you argue that? Or just argue insenuations you make up from my post?
