It's a clip from a podcast that's about a year old that I ran across recently on a rabbit hole expedition. It's just a quick comment, not a long story or anything like that. I post this mostly because our guy @UAgrad93 made a very similar comment about Homer Smith and QB preparation as well from his time at UA... So I thought he might enjoy it. On Aikman... I'll admit, I was never a Cowboys fan, but I’ve always liked and respected him. Still do, as both a player and as an A+ broadcaster these days.

The comment on Homer Smith begins about the 1:45, but the entire clip is worth a listen...

Was fortunate to coach a QB with some skills. Recruited by UA's Jimmy Fuller. Coach Fuller dropped by the school one day and showed us a 3 ring binder with about 300 pages in it. Coach Fuller says, "this our playbook.....for Penn State", Homer Smith was the OC. The book Coach Smith wrote on the passing game is a very thorough and full of great info on the passing game.

Situations!!! Every single meeting before practice. Coach would pull out the magnetic board, give the situation ( ex. down 2pts, 1:15 left in the game, no timeouts, -24 yard line) give the play and the QB would recite first/second/third read and Coach would say complete or incomplete. He would also do like 4 or 6 minute offense, taking the air out of the ball with the ground game, learning how to bleed the play clock down before snapping it. I learned A LOT of football from that man.

I still have the ā€˜89 playbook from Coach Smith and will validate your comment, 3 ring binder, roughly 300 pages. QBs had to know IT ALL!!!
