That tactic obviously works on certain kids but the big-time guys Saban seems to prefer it doesn't even come close to being effective. That type of stuff pushes a certain personality type away. Julio Jones said that while all these other teams were promising him that he would start day one, Saban was only promising him the same opportunity every other receiver on the team received. That along with Saban telling him point blank to his face, and in front of his mother, "Son, we'd love to have you and you would definitely help us but we will win a championship with or without you" (something along those lines) while others were telling him that he was their missing piece to a title.
