🏈 What if Saban leaves?

Now let me preface this by saying that I don't think Saban will leave (if he does) until he wins a NC at Bama. And he could very well decide to retire in Tuscaloosa.

But if he DOES leave, I think our talent will be at such a high level that it would be extremely difficult to hire a truly bad coach that could screw it up. And we will also have top facilities and a 100K+ stadium.

I think the key is if Saban can sign one more class for us. That would give us 4 full classes (well the 2007 class wasn't 'fully' signed by Saban, but was still Top 10) under Saban, and would give us as much talent as any program in the SEC.

So I think is Saban is still our coach on NSD next year, we are probably set in a place to compete for SEC and/or NC titles, for the next 5-10 years, minimum.

I don't pretend to know what Nick Saban is thinking, although I suspect he's thinking about the process and how to dominate his opponent. I imagine he thinks that pretty much every minute of every day. But what he thinks in regards to Tuscaloosa and the eventual end of his career? Who knows? I will say this though, Saban has stated that he and his wife are happy here. Saban is in a situation where he (atleast by appearances) has an immense amount of power and control. He's been given the resources to build the program back to greatness and I think that is exactly the kind of situation that Saban wants to be in, and is happiest in. Also, and maybe this is just me, but I think his recent comments regarding the Anthony Grant hire speak VOLUMES about Nick Saban's desire and vision for Alabama. In his presser he said flatly that it's important (to him) that when people think of Alabama they think of a certain quality. And the quality should be at a high level whether it be football, basketball, checkers , or charades. Those comments would indicate to me that Coach Saban is an individual that has a lot invested in the program and isn't looking for greener pastures.

But, one comment that bothers me is your assumption that it would be hard for a truly bad coach to come in and wreck what Saban has done, because the talent is at such a high level. I would disagree with that and point my finger towards Bat'n Rooj as evidence that a truly bad coach can come in and do damage. While LSU isn't in shambles, they certainly appear to be on the decline, despite having top-level talent stockpiled at every position (supposedly).

Mike Dubose recruited pretty well at Alabama, but turned out to be a terrible head coach.

Ron Zook was left a treasure trove of talent at Florida but his teams were schizophrenic during his tenure there.

Charlie Weiss has recruited like a gang buster at Notre Dame, and that hasn't exactly panned out for them.

Orgeron recruited tons of talent to Ole Miss, but he was a complete moron.

All of the situations are a little different, as some coaches inherited talent, while others were building up their respective programs with talent, but the bottom line is the same in each case. A mediocre to bad head coach can come in and bury a program, regardless of talent.

I don't think Saban is going anywhere anytime soon, but if he leaves he leaves. BAMA will be in a better position at that point because of him, but wont be able to live off it. We'd have to hire a competent head coach that understands BAMA, the SEC, and the work required to succeed in this job. Talent alone isn't going to keep the program at a high level IMHO.

Yes a bad coach could still screw it up, but it would be VERY difficult to do so.

Let's look at Lester. He inherited an LSU team that had recruiting classes ranked #18 #2, #1, and #15. Saban would probably leave the next coach with better talent AND better facilities than Lester got when he took over.

As for Dubose, he was a good 'paper' recruiter. He recruited about as well as Saban does when it came to rankings, but while Saban got his Julios and BJ Scotts in school, Dubose saw his David Paines and Mac Tylers never play a down of football for the Tide. But even with that, Dubose still won the SEC in 1999.

And finally, if Saban DOES leave Bama, it will probably be right after winning a NC. IOW, Bama will trying to hire a new head coach with NC-caliber talent, a 100K stadium, and state of the art facilities. The list of top coaches that would want to come here would be longer than it has been in decades.

Again, we COULD screw it up with the next hire, but it would be a chore to do so.

Why can't we just enjoy the moment ...I mean things are REALLY good right now if ur an Alabama fan..why not take it all in and enjoy it rather than wish something bad on Alabama...

That was kinda the whole thrust of my point that even IF Saban leaves, we still should be in pretty good shape.

Always best to examine and prepare for every possibility. No sense dwelling and worrying, but also doesn't make sense to ignore the possible.

Men like Coach Saban are rare. I suspect that what he wants most is to have a school that sees things like he does and works like he works.

Right now it BAMA's to win or lose.

So the question is, do you see BAMA messing up and losing what we have?

Saban has stated several times that he wants to leave a legacy at Alabama like that of Bear Bryant.

He told ESPN during his first interview after he took the job with us.

I think either Alabama will screw it up or he'll get tired of the crazy expectations us Bama fans have.\

what if Saban leaves? its a foregone conclusion he will leave.

enjoy it while he is here.

i don't understand why this is even a topic.

i agree , whats it really matter. He will leave oneday and this last year we dropped the ball ( no pun intended) on a NC..I don't think we will get as close with Mcelroy or anyone else in the coming years.

Tuscaloosa is WAYYY too close to his Lake House. His comments about Grant make it seem to me he wants eventually to have a top tier Athlete Program at the University he is AD at :)

Ever since Coach Saban signed on at Alabama, my LSU "friends" have told me that he will "break your heart." They said he will be gone in 3 to 5 years. I told them that I don't think so, but if he goes, leaving us in as good a shape as he left LSU, I would thank him and wish him Godspeed. Ol' Lester won a BCS title with Nick's recruits, and ol' Lester ain't the coach all these Cajuns think he is.

I think he gets agrivated with the expectations a bit. I don't blame him. But i don'tt hink that that alone is enough to do in a man like Nick. He pretty much is the King of the state right now. He couldn't go anywhere in this state where he isn't known by all. But he is a man dedicated to perfection. His primary joy in life, outside of his family is teaching those young men on the practice feild and being around high school recruiting. As long as he has the full backing of the University, a good paying contract, can run his program his way, and fans that pack the staduim for a spring practice game....i fail to see him leaving Bama for another caoching job @ his age. I think he will retire here.
Just how long he remains in caoching or if he renews his contract....is another question.

I think he's gotten everything he has asked for here and quite a few things he never expected. As long as he & Mrs. Terri are happy he'll be here. I honestly don''t think Nick Saban is the kind of man that can just hang it up over night. it mean to much to him. I belive he'll be doing this, and doing it here just like Braynt did....untill he can do it no longer.
