Gill is highly respected and said to be an unbelievable motivator but I'm not sold that AU would actually hire an African American coach just yet.

Could be wrong though! :P

WTF

Alot of discussion about it today Mr. WTF!

Hopefully they can make it a first for Gill's sake if he wants to be there, alot of positive things said about the man's coaching history.

Well, we all know just how much ESPN and other know about that! If they say it, then it must be true.

I don't see race being a problem at BARN. I think they just want to get the right man for the job. Why don't you let the barn fans speak on the matter...

I dont need your approval to speak my opinion about anything. The barns fans opinions have nothing to do with mine, So STFU!

I listened to AU callers call in and discuss Gill's accomplishments and chances on the plains on my way thru south Alabama this morning.

Jox was also discussing it this afternoon and I have to agree it would be a big suprise to alot of folks to see them make that move. Thanks for choosing my source for your own discussion though. Classy.
Those people on JOX were an absolute joke. There is no way at all it would be a big deal. The only thing more embarrassing than it actually being a problem was me picturing a person Washington driving through the state that happened to listen to those callers.

No offense to the guy, because he seems like a great coach, but I don't see him being a good fit at Auburn. Jumping from Buffalo to the SEC...I mean really? Might be a culture shock for the guy. He would need one hell of a staff.

This is exactly my point. I mean was it really worth getting rid of Wingnut for this?

You guys are bashing Turner Gill?

I think he's one of the most underrated coaches out there. Stand up guy too. Am I the only one?

I'm not bashing Turner Gill, but I do question the move.

If he spent a couple of years at a school like...say Iowa, or in that type of league, then moved on to Auburn it would make more sense.

I just see it as a HUGE leap to go from Buffalo to Auburn in terms of the size of the program and what all is involved.

No, you are not the only one. Anyone who has ever played the game knows that the only thing the barn was lacking this year was unity/motivation. This guy (Gill) is a class act and I think kids would want to play for him. Black, white, red, green....It makes no difference. A good coach is a good coach. Something wingnut was not. He was a manager. When wingnut was tested to see if he could coach the barn out of trouble, he failed miserably. At some point, a coach has to put on the whistle, get his hands dirty and actually do something. Gill looks and carries himself like a football coach....with class.

Nebraskas not big enough. A coach has to work his way up the ladder. I guess Mack Brown status would be better though. :?

A QB coach at Nebraska. Not a coordinator, a position coach.

Since you bring Mack Brown into this, let's use him as a prime example.

He was a position coach before taking a coordinator role at Oklahoma. Then, a head coaching job at Tulane (there's your Buffalo comparison) and then on to take the HC job at N. Carolina before moving on to Texas.

If you can win at Buffalo, you can win anywhere. End of discussion. The man has nothing to prove to anyone regarding his coaching abilities.

I don't think you have any idea the obstacles UB faces. High school FB in New York state is horrible (why do you think Syracuse is having the difficulty it's enduring? Syracuse was ahead of the curve in recruiting Florida, which is why is was successful under McPherson and Pasqualoni, but that well's dried up).

There's no nearby JUCO system to pick from to pluck from. And it's the MAC and UB -- a program with zero tradition and zero success since it moved to 1-A 10 years ago.

For every example of a coach winning at a smaller program and then doing it again on a larger stage you can find just as many examples of those that fail. In fact, I'd dare say more.

There is a hell of a lot more involved with bigger programs than smaller ones. And believe you me, the Auburn job comes with A LOT of external factors that coaching at Buffalo will not have prepared him for...

True on the external factors.

It is impressive to win at Buffalo, but looking at their season there are several things that jump out.

(1) 4 overtime games in which they won 3. That is a sign of good coaching in the clutch...or players making plays...the combined records of the 3 teams they beat in OT was 16-20.

(2) The MAC was down this year...and for the MAC, that is saying something. Of the 12 teams in the MAC, 8 were below .500 in D1 play - 1 was .500. That means that 9 of 12 teams had non-winning seasons. Only 3 teams in the league had winning seasons. While an argument can be made about which conference was the nation's was the best, there is no argument about which team was the worst. The conference is so bad that Marshall left to join CUSA...that is sad.

(3) Their non-conference schedule featured 2 good teams (Pitt and Missou), and 3 bad teams (Temple, Army, and Utep). They lost the former and won the latter - including an overtime win against Army.

I do think Gill is a class guy, and probably a good coach, but his 8-5 record in 2008 does not tell me a whole lot. 15-22 overall does not say a whole lot either. At least Gary Pinkel (who I wanted when we hired Fran) had sustained success over an extended period, and beat some respectable non-conference teams (Purdue, Penn State, Nevada).

Coaches can be a flash in the pan. That is what makes hiring a mid major coach with not much of a track record such a crap shoot. I don't know how much being the QB coach in an option system, or director of player development for one season in the NFL, prepares you for being a head coach in the SEC. Honestly, Croom had a more impressive resume' when State hired him.
