The ACC isn't guaranteed a spot. It was just assumed when they set the rules that the ACC champ would be one of the highest 5 ranked champions... but they never clarified that in writing. In this case. James Madison would be ranked higher than Duke, so they get that spot.

I'll give Cignetti and Indiana credit... they dodge the tough teams when able, but when they do have to play them, they beat them or give them a good fight. Cignetti has been gambling heavily with the portal and winning (see also Lane Kiffin), which I don't think is sustainable, but he hit the jackpot this season.
