šŸˆ TOUCHDOWN ALABAMA MAGAZINE: Suggestions for Poor Attendance in Student Section

The University needs to explain to the students why its important that they show up and explain that if they don't show up there will be consequences. Be transparent with the students and if they choose not to show up to X number of games, then start reducing tickets. Don't turn them over to season ticket holders, sell them outright each game thus providing the flexibility to increase student tickets at a time in the future based on their participation.

You should also write a whiny article demanding that something should be done about all the empty general seats today. It was so disgraceful. There wasn't a demand for student or general tickets because the game was such a joke. Your claim that it was a perfect day for football might be right, but unfortunately there wasn't any real football played out there today.

Fans voted with their feet ! Best display possible to show disapproval of too many cupcake games. It is a waste of resources, time and effort. Even Saban has indicated he wants a stronger play schedule nationwide for all teams.

Boycott is the answer !

Such games are a disgrace to the game.

As a season ticket holder. This.

I actually like that idea a whole lot!

The problem is logistics (call UPS, right?)

The University doesn't have the technology in place for 6000 or so students to swipe a card...

UofSC put a new system in place this season.
New policies:

  • bottled water will be discounted to $1 at the start of the 4th quarter for the 2 concession stands in the north endzone (student section)
  • Students can purchase concessions with their Carolina Cash at games. Previously only 2 Carolina Card readers were located at each stand. This will be upped to six per stand to make purchasing quicker and easier.
  • After the Alma Mater is played, students will be given a ticket on their way out of the stadium. This ticket will be transferred into loyalty points when scanned on Greene St in front of Russell the Monday and Tuesday after a home game from 10-4. Once scanned they will be applied towards the next games ticket request.
  • Non-student shuttle riders will still be given wristbands, but they will no longer be required to be put on by event staff, therefore speeding up the shuttling process to Williams Brice.
  • The hashtag #StayCocky will be used throughout the week heading up to the game. Students can tweet in using the hashtag or tagging student government at @UofSCSG, saying why they will stay until the end of the games.

Rather write a "whiny article" than write something stupid... There were NO other sections that empty. I've had dozens of folks who have said they would have paid for those seats in that rotten game... If those seats in the student section were offered to folks for half the face price of a regular ticket, folks who could have never afford to take a family to a game to any other game, just for the experience of taking the family to ANY game...

Wow! I had no idea that some schools are that far ahead of us in good ideas... Thanks for the info... I hope such ideas get to T-Town....

To help make your point, I ran errands during the game, still haven't watched the whole thing at this point.

I bounce around during commercials. I do that regardless of who we play.

Like a lot of the crowd in the second half, if I were in T-town yesterday I would have returned to my tailgate.

It's Homecoming. The students never stay the whole game. The crowd doesn't either.

But you did write something stupid, because your whole article was flawed. Anyone who wanted to go to that game practically could have done so for free. That stadium was maybe half full.

With all due respect, the students deserve the opportunity to go to the games over a bunch of others. The students pay mandatory fees in their tuition that offers them access to the game. Boosters and alumni voluntarily pay the money, students are forced. Plus, without students, you wouldn't have college football, period.

NOW, I am in total agreement with everyone that it is a disgrace that students aren't showing up while others are having to pay a premium to get in. Most of the time students are flipping the tickets for profit to younger students with less credit hours and friends of students that have to upgrade. Hell, I paid $900 for a ticket to the National Championship game from a student that paid $30, and I was a student that simply didn't have enough hours to overcome the demand from seniors and such. Look on Facebook, a slew of students did it for major profits while you had tons of other students like myself that died to get in, and I paid the price. I like the voucher idea, because it is first come/first serve in the student section. I was in a fraternity, so I loved the block seating offered to me during my tenure, but the university needs to start docking these people and organizations that don't show up and get too drunk tailgating to make it. I see all of those empty seats and wish I could take my daughter (three years old) every week, because she absolutely loves waiving her pom pom and listening to the band, but of course it's almost impossible to afford a premium every single week, especially for a little kid and a wife.

A simple Excel spreadsheet can document the student activity by their Action Card numbers. As of now they're given three strikes and they lose privilege for future seasons. I guess my post is a little more informative rather than a solution, but the voucher idea sounds very good. maybe not letting them in first, but sectioning off their section within the student section and allowing them to enjoy tailgating festivities and still getting a premium seat by simply showing up. Tailgating is what makes it all so special to us in the South, and I am not one to get into the stadium and sit on my thumb right when they open the gates. Vouchers or place a tiered level pricing system (remaining affordable by student standards!!!) and let those that really care to be there get the better seats.
