🏈 Georgia Tape - Passing Game Issues (Only)

I reviewed the tape and have done as deep a dive as I can. There were some GOOD things we did as a team but ultimately there were a LOT more bad things we did on the offensive side this game. I will say this, I came away with essentially the same feelings I had before...Grubb and the OL are the main issues but Simpson is completely regressed at this point and I don't know if they can fix him in the time they have and build him some confidence and I'm not confident Grubb knows how to do that very well. Running game blocking was mostly OL issues and no push again. I am just covering the passing game right now though. If you guys want a more detailed breakdown of the entire game I'm considering doing some Youtube videos at some point to breakdown Bama games Win or Lose. Hope you guys like it, I'm open for any suggestions/edits people think I should make on these because I'm just starting and learning.

Alabama vs Georgia - Passing Game Issues

  1. 2nd and 8 4:03 in 1st Q (Completion to Hill for 4 yards)

    1765174444392.png
1765174462130.png
1765174774381.png

No pressure shown, no pressure sent. Clean Pocket. Multiple Options here, but Ty blows through his internal clock and checks it down without looking even at Bernard who is easily open for a big gain on the left. Isaiah Horton was his first read then he immediately moved to Hill, didn’t even think to look backside for Bernard who is only single covered and open.

2) 3rd and 6 1:36 1st Q (Interception)

1765174612392.png
1765174820456.png

Ty throws an interception here, and it’s totally on him at this point. Grubb draws up a decent play with options. There's probably 3 better throws than the throw he makes over the middle here for an interception that was probably the 2nd worst option 1st being the double covered Bernard. A safe throw to the TE leaking out on the left is wide open for 10+,Ryan Williams is 1 on 1 vs the safety and comes open deep over the middle and On the right side, Brooks has around 6 yards of separation with the defender turned the wrong way…likely a TD if he completes it to Brooks. Either the safe dump to the TE or Brooks were the better options.

3) 1st and 10 7:51 2nd Q - Incompletion (Throw Away)

1765175778351.png

Ty just brought Bernard in motion to identify zone defense.

1765175808181.png

Right here, nobody is beating the zone. Receivers are not moving to zone beating areas and are actually running into more coverage. Poor play design, probably needed to check out of this at the LOS once we knew it was zone defense but we ran the play clock too far down. Ty still has an option on this play for some reason he hesitates and lets the defender close the gap on Hill (defender is almost 15 yards in front of Hill marked). Just a rough job seeing the field and hesitation can kill you in the SEC.

MORE TO COME - Having to post in parts it looks like.

4) 2nd and 10 7:45 2nd Q (Batted Down)

1765176550331.png

1765176569914.png

Ty brought Horton in motion, identifying zone defense. Once again, we don't have a lot of zone beating routes dialed up here and we end up bracketed and shut down. I think Ty took the 2nd best option on this but unfortunately good defensive play here and they knocked the ball down. I think the best option would've been for Ty to take off with his legs, they aren't spying him until the 4th quarter.

5) 3rd and 10 7:41 1st Q (Incompletion to Brooks)

1765176666337.png

Can't see it from this angle but he's shifting the formation and checks for coverage.

1765176806414.png

The play call doesn't seem bad but he gets hurried and throws too early and it's incomplete. Honestly Williams looks to have his man beat and if the safety peeled to Williams then Horton would've been open on the deep post here. Just needed about 2 seconds more protection. Vandermark misses the switch here. This is also where Bama started using the TE to leak out of the backfield and he's WIDE open as well. This is a stunt that Georgia uses at least twice and both times it hurries Simpson into a early throw.

6) 3rd and 2 4:10 2nd Q (Incomplete Pass to Hill)

1765176921977.png

1765176936298.png

From just looking at things here, I'm wondering why Simpson just missed this easy throw. Something he hasn't been doing much all year until recently. Georgia is lining up in man coverage they usually are running that for any 3rd down for the first half and 3rd Quarter. Playcall is correct, blocking is good, just bad execution and throw by Simpson here. If we blame the RBs/WRs for dropping balls we gotta blame the QB for a bad throw that was uncatchable here in a easy throw situation (No pressure on him).

7) 2nd and 9 14:21 3rd Q (Incomplete Pass - Throw Away)

1765177145675.png

Ty Motions Edwards to the left and should be identifying zone here

1765177155284.png

Two coaching points here for different people. Once again, the TE leaking out is WIDE THE HELL OPEN we should've noticed this in the halftime adjustments and been throwing it until they stop us. Funny enough the 1 time we finally figure it out, they have a guy spying in the middle to cover that (later in the game). Lotzier Brooks is running past his window here, he should be sitting at centerfield and catching an easy 15-20 yard completion but he keeps running onwards. Williams is breaking in on a 1 on 1 situation also there's a few options here but Ty bails because Brailsford and Proctor get bull rushed into his lap. This goes to show it's a game of small issues that add up. This isn't Ty's fault, but it looks that way because others didn't execute well. If they keep the pocket clean he likely hits Brooks or Williams on the Deep passes or Edwards for the first down over the middle.

8) 3rd and 9 14:11 3rd Q (QB Sacked for a Loss)

1765177410168.png

1765177422645.png

Georgia lines up showing pressure but drops into a zone coverage but in doing so their LBs turn their backs to Ty the entire time he could easily scramble for the 1st down here. Yea look at the WRs they're all running INTO coverage Edwards is fading into the sideline where the DB is already there in phase. Brooks is running directly into his DB Williams and Bernard are both breaking inwards towards two covering players...not sure what the playcall is but it's not good. Also Hill misses his blitzer from the edge and it causes some pressure before the routes finish. Ty not wanting to run has become a tendency people are keying on. They do not spy him at all and it creates more defenders in the secondary or more rushers in the middle. Gotta use your legs to force them to be honest.

9) 1st and 10 5:40 3rd Q (Pass Complete 4 Yards to Daniel Hill)

1765177670327.png

1765177680141.png
1765177698842.png

Another really long developing play we probably shouldn't be doing. We slid protection and gave him a clean pocket. Neither Bernard or Williams are looking for the ball so he finally decides to dump it down. Extremely poorly designed play call again. Hill leaks out of the backfield and is open for a bit but Simpson doesn't notice until late. Hill also probably needs to stay closer to the QB here and not backpedal to the sidelines. No need to drift further and further away despite that Simpson had time and could've hit him in the chest but just not a great throw here.

10) 2nd and 1 14:35 4th Q (QB Sack for loss - Personal Foul Penalty 15 yards on Georgia)

1765177954586.png

1765177963778.png

I'm honestly not sure WHAT we are doing on 2nd and 1 in a situation where we need a drive to keep moving. I get that the run game wasn't amazing, but it isn't that ABYSMAL that it can't pick up only 1 yard. Get the first down and move on to the next play here, terrible call, terrible execution by the QB. He hesitated again, and even though the WRs are open once again, this is on Grubb he should've just gotten the first and moved on. We had plenty of time still to get back into the game we didn't have to throw on every down here. Okay back to the play, Carroll attacks the outside man instead of the "Most Dangerous" and Hill gets crossed up on who to hit after Carroll's mistake. That being said, the WRs come open about 1 second before the blitzer gets close enough to Ty. Ty wasn't looking downfield he was bracing for the sack...bad execution.

11) 2nd and 6 13:04 4th Q (Pass Incomplete to Daniel Hill)

1765178189069.png

1765178199546.png

Hill is definitely the safest option, Edwards and Brooks are also open across the middle as options here. Hill could've gone for a ways here if he catches this, instead he looks for a defender before securing the ball and drops it. Nearest defender going for Hill is about 10 yards downfield and flat footed could've easily gotten the 6 and avoided a hit here. Just mistakes compounding on themselves. I gotta say this is a good play call by Grubb I have hated on a few already but this one was not on him at all just a mistake.

12) 3rd and 6 12:59 4th Q (Pass Incomplete to Ryan Williams - Defensive Pass Interference)

1765178380699.png

1765178559986.png

Vandermark and Brailsford don't communicate on the stunt and switch here and fail to pick-up the stuntin lineman. By the way, Georgia has run this twice (stated this earlier) this is the other one that was super effective. Also this playcall was likely a touchdown if Simpson can step into this ball instead of getting hit.

13) 1st and 10 12:54 4th Q (Pass incomplete Deep to Brooks)

1765178713571.png

1765178723494.png

Carroll and Formby mess up the switch here maybe 1 more second and this is likely a TD play to Brooks maybe Simpson gets out a better ball here. Hard to tell, but unfortunately OL screw up costs us again. Yea Simpson could've led it a little better but hard to deny the pressure in the face issue.

14) 2nd and 10 12:48 4th Q (Pass Incomplete Deep Left to Ryan Williams)

1765178811391.png

1765178820477.png

Williams has to catch this Ball, first and foremost. It went through his hands, its why he's a WR in our system not sure why he's had the Yips this year so far. Second, what the heck is Brailsford doing here, he acts like he's pulling but nobody else is acting that way. Pretty sure he has the wrong play call. Simpson throws up a dime, Williams drops it.

15) 1st and 10 9:05 4th Q (Pass Incomplete Short Middle to Edwards)

1765179024112.png

1765179037854.png

Two misses here. Brailsford lets his defender push into him then run away and around to get to the QB. If he engages and sticks him, he doesn't likely get free. Second - Ty misses a wide open Hill here. He's got plenty of green grass in front and defenders are mostly running away from him. He'd get the first and if he breaks a tackle could've been off to the races here.

16) 3rd and 2 8:22 4th Q (Incomplete pass short middle to Edwards)

1765179226628.png

1765179235186.png

First off if you count up the defenders in the box you have numbers for an easy first down run. QB run or Daniel Hill, either works here. They dial up some pressure from the right side on this play and while the entire game the key has been to dump it off to the TE (Which we refused to do) this time we'd be better off hitting the RB who is uncovered in the flat here. I think the play call was there honestly, but Ty didn't see it and they didn't execute correctly. If I'm a OC though, in that situation, I'm immediately telling my QB to just run it up the middle, especially knowing we were going to go for it on 4th down...we could've had 2 plays to get 2 yards on the ground. I like my odds there. Situational awareness is a major issue here from Grubb or Simpson or both.

17) 4th and 2 8:17 4th Q (Incomplete pass short right to Bernard)

1765179450357.png

1765179462159.png

One of the most talked about plays of that game. Honestly, the play call was kinda weird but it could've worked once again if we dump it off to the back. Georgia was selling out to cover WRs and leaving our Backs and TEs running free most of the night. I'm still not sure who in the booth or on the field is seeing these tendencies but whoever it is should be fired and have their desk turned over. This has been obvious for nearly 3 quarters but no adjustments were made. Simpson could've easily run this with his legs too but decided to throw a long ball to the opposite sideline in tight coverage instead. He had easily 2-3 more seconds of protection also...so honestly I'm completely baffled by this play pretty bad all around.

18) 1st and 10 5:03 4th Q (Pass Incomplete Deep Left to Ryan Williams)

1765179640755.png

1765179649247.png

Here's one of those where the protection is there but the play call is terrible. We are running our routes INTO other routes and coverage here. We got man, should be 1 v 1 match-up instead of breaking one inside and the other out to create 1 v 1 situation we literally break one into the vertical which allows both defenders to cover both routes with a safety over the top...what the HELL are we doing here. Either poorly coached WRs or Poorly run OC

19) 2nd and 10 4:56 4th Q (Sacked for Loss)

1765179847583.png

1765179859673.png

At this point Georgia had been spying Simpson for the last few plays, someone should've gotten on the radio to him to be careful of that. He still could've gotten a block from Proctor here to spring him or dumped it off to Hill. He bails WAY too early on this play...this is kinda why I believe he may be done, I think he's seeing ghosts and I just don't know what we can do to get old confident Ty Simpson back to the field. I know he's banged up but that doesn't account for all the vision and clock issues in his head.

20) 2nd 10 3:42 4th Q (Pass Incomplete short left to Dear)

1765180295225.png

1765180306413.png

1765180323583.png

This is one of the chain reactions where mistakes denied us a TD here. Dear could've probably gotten closer to the 1st if this pass is better placed but ultimately Michael Caroll didn't identify his man AT ALL and let him on a free rush to Simpson. If you look over the middle on the 3rd picture on the left side Rico Scott is about to be all alone at the G for a Touchdown, that's where Simpson was looking before he had to force dump it because of the pressure. So essentially TD wiped off by a mistake.

21) 3rd and 10 3:37 4th Q (Pass Incomplete Rigth sideline to Ryan Williams)

1765180531720.png

1765180540416.png

Williams looks to be on a double move here and Simpson seems to think he's on a quick out route. Not sure who messed it up here honestly but clearly odd to be doing a double move on 3rd and 10 for the end zone when they're playing deep coverage instead of tight inside coverage. Also if Simpson doesn't panic here, Horton breaks over the middle for an easy TD because safety is floating towards Williams with Simpson's eyes.

22) 4th and 10 3:33 4th Q (Pass Incomplete Deep Right to Bernard)

1765180693814.png

Simpson gets man here and after the motion snaps the ball. They bring a blitz. We kinda pick-up the right guys here but it forces Simpson out of the pocket here and begins a scramble Drill. The one gripe I have here is the WRs keep floating further and further down field like it was a hail mary situation. IF someone works back to the ball on a comeback likely we could pick-up the first down here and keep the ball moving. I'm unsure why the WRs are taught to constantly move further and further down the field here.

Overall Thoughts --

O-Line - Honestly this one is hard to say they played great in some situations and awful in others. The run game aside, in pass pro way too many mistakes made against a team that didn't really blitz that much they just kept doing stunts and dropping into coverage. Hoping the line would struggle against it and they did. This is just a microcosm of our issues but it ripples out from this point and causes issues elsewhere that make things hard to be effective on offense. I don't understand how this far into a season we can be all these simple mistakes like failing to identify a man, failing to win a 1 v 1 battle, misunderstanding "most dangerous" on throwing situations. Just not a great performance overall.

QB - I just think Simpson is a shell of his earlier self during the year. Whether it's injury or not I don't know. He hasn't been getting a ton of help up front but even when they DO give him plenty of time and we have open options, his accuracy is terrible lately. His internal clock is going off way too early at times and he's making poor choices and forcing things with the football in his hands. I'm not going to call for Russell or Mack because I think Simpson is THE guy and the only guy right now that can take us anywhere in the playoffs but we REALLY need to work on fixing his confidence over the next few days and get him his swagger back. He looks like a grizzled Vietnam Veteran who has been through hell right now and if we can't get him back to normal before the game in Norman that won't be any better. He's capable of being a 1st round QB but he's playing like a Day 3 guy lately.

OC - This is part of the Simpson issues all together.. Which is why he can be fixed. A good OC can adjust to give their QB the confidence they need and create successful opportunities in a game for them to complete passes, start drives, and find the end zone. They find creative smart ways to stop teams from rushing/blitzing all the time. To punish teams for making mistakes and leaving wide open players. There's a lot of options IMO - RPOs, Slants, Turn around/Timing routes. Something needs to change to get the sticks moving earlier in drives and continue to boost his confidence over the course of the game in Norman. We've got to shed this weird shell of these deep slow developing plays, we need route trees that offer up Medium and Intermediate options if the blitzes are coming and need to coach up how to find the checkdowns and people up top calling down to tell them that the TE has been open for 3 quarters straight and we haven't once just dumped it off to him. This has all been an issue for WEEKs and I'm getting fed up with it, these are things that should've been addressed before the Oklahoma game and definitely should've been addressed after that performance and issues. I think Grubb thought he was doing amazing but just blamed Simpson for all the mistakes when in reality Grubbs plays caused a lot of those mistakes, long developing plays caused the sacks and fumbles and forced Simpson to make throws faster.

Nicely Done. In regards to the OL, I'll just keep saying it. PAC-10 zone blocking doesn't work in the SEC. Either that or they just can't teach it. Might work great against 280 lb DLs, but do we really need three OL blocking 1 or 2 DLs? An if we do, for God's sake don't turn your back to the LOS. OK, AU and Georgia ate us up on that.

Good stuff, 9201. I know that took some time. On the infamous 4th down play late in the game, my son and I noticed immediately that Hill was wide open after the fake handoff. He could have picked up 20. But you show a lot of plays where there were open options. Painful to see some of that and realize the missed opportunities. Got to learn from them.

It looks like they would have figured that out after they lost the National Championship game to Georgia.

Hell of a job you did reviewing the film.

Thanks for your info.

Short version. The defense is waiting for our receivers to run the same routes they have since FSU and often they run to the spots before our receivers can get there. Grubb has done nothing with the shorter routes to counter, TE or receiver should be running 5-7 yard routes to the middle of the field as you have shown. The defense is betting that the number of seconds it takes for our deeper patterns to complete will be more than enough seconds for their blitz to create havoc. The RB outlet is good but we don't have a RB with any speed that can make them pay. Our guys go down at 1st contact and are so slow that even the lbers run them down for 2-3 yard gains.

JMO but there is a reason Grubb was fired after one year of his deal. He is a mistake, and Kalen is in a tuff spot. If we get lucky, he might take the OC at Oregon State of that position hasn't been filled already. He is out of place in the SEC. Once the coaches saw his deal (6 weeks or so) then we've been struggling.

OL Coach has to go.

#15 is a mystery at this point. He made those throws early in the year to #5 deep over the middle but the teams have now seen that deal. Those throws were dangerous as hell then and are today. Even Eastern Illinois adjusted to that deal.

JMO but this bunch isn't going to defeat OU. Most likely to lose worse than the 1st game.

Kalen has work to do this offseason and it all starts with him.

Debbie Downer.

Awesome work here and thank you for providing. The line work doesn't look as bad to me as maybe in felt in real time. We definitely dealt with pressure, but there are a lot of pockets and room tk throw on the plays above. Thank you for putting this together.

#15 is at the point now where he has already decided which receiver he is going to throw the ball when he breaks the huddle. That is pretty much what I did from 64-67. When the ball is snapped and all those bastids start running at you, it's easy to lose the "what we saw in the film room).

This team is running up the hill, and it is a pretty good incline.
