Did you guys hear what happened to WVa and Kansas today? Another big time hoax.

You guys might remember a couple of weeks ago when I was skimming the Michigan boards and came across an interesting, if not downright bizarre article. It stated that Kirk Ferentz of Iowa was going to Michigan and that it was a done deal and so and so forth. It was so much a done deal that the premium site I found it on had the announcement in place. People bought it hook, line and sinker. It later turns out that a group of Iowa fans perpetrated the whole affair and that there was nothing to it.

Fast forward....

Today there were reports that Mangino from Kansas was heading to West Virginia. Wow! Sounds like WVa pulled off a nice hire huh?! Not so fast my friends! Get this! Apparently a paper in Lawrence, the Lawrence Journal-World a.k.a. KUsports.com was having phone conversations with Mangino's agent that indicated that Mangino was headed to WVa. Only problem was....it turned out to NOT be Mangino's agent. It was a complete hoax played on the paper.

Here is the link.

These coaching searches have gotten completely out of hand. From coaches running out on their contracts to media hoaxes, it's a complete circus. I wouldn't be surprised that all of the things going on now will eventually lead to an overhaul in how contracts/coaches are handled in the future throughout the NCAA. The situation has become untenable and something has to be done on what looks more and more like a problem that is only going to get bigger and bigger unless something is done to enforce ethics.

I was thinking the other day what good is a contract on a coach, other than finiancial terms (buyout clauses and incentives). I would think something needs to be done to keep these guys from up and running out on signed contracts, esp. when a school has given a pay raise and extension a year earlier. Maybe have something in the contract that is another instution comes calling, the AD can turn them down at least for the first 3 years of a new deal, and make the agents pay a most of the buyout clause if he shops his client around for an open coaching position.

that's hilarious that someone would do that. First thing that came to mind was that it was probably some fans from Kansas State that pulled that trick.

Why can't they move Signing Day back a month, so that universitites do not feel so rushed to hire a replacement before the bowl season is even over? I think resolving that issue of timing would be a step in the right direction, although not a copmlete answer in and of itself.

I would like to see two signing days, one before the season starts and the one we already have in place. Allowing a signing day before the season starts would prevent comments from getting stolen by other schools during the season and likewise, allow coaches to focus on preparing their current teams without some of the recruiting burden on their backs.

I considered that at one point in time and then decided I wasn't in favor of it. The biggest reason is having guys take up schollys when you have break out players in theirs senior seasons (Lawrence as example) and you might have a spot already locked up and can't afford to pull another player in.

I wonder how much an affect moving the signing day back a month would have on spring camp preparations for coaching staffs as well.

Its more than likely Al Del Greco doing this. Makes since why he's always the first one with the Breaking News...

I think it's damn funny.
I hope these folks playing the media like fools continues. It's what they get for being so eager to get the ''first scoop'' truth be damned. I know it's their job but they do it with zero professionalism and absolutely no consequences for their lack of incompetence.
It's about time people give them what they give out.
There was a time when there was some respect between the media and the people they covered. Not any more.
If anything needs to change it's the way the media is treated. Cut them off when they break confidentiality codes or report something that was asked to stay out of the public. Serves them right and I for one hope it gets worse for them.
