FWIW, Scout.com is reporting Grobe is staying at WF...posted 9:45, EST.

If that is true, someone screwed up big time. Grobe had already said yes. I wonder if the leak was premature and upset him...The announcement of the news was an issue with Grobe, but I understood that he had said it was go.

We shall see.

On the Endowment issue, schools don't draw against endowments to pay for coaches. It is not legal unless the endowment was for a coach.

Sure, there are people who could pay $600,000 for a coach, but the endowment is not indicative of individual wealth...as I said, Asbury has a $150M endowment and it is a graduate school that prepares preachers, most of whom make significantly less than $50,000 /yr.

31,500 is an indication of how seriously they take their football...their fan base is not large and given the low level of interest traditionally, it is not likely that they have any individual donors who would fork over $600,000 /yr for a coach.

Keep in mind that endowments are often from corporate donors and are earmarked for certain things....A major hospital may donate $50M for a scholarship for med school students. Occasionally you have a wealthy person who leaves their money to a school for funding in a particular field - particularly true at research universities like Wake. Dr. Bland left 3.5M to the med school and 3.5M the law school. That is where you get $1B endowments, not John and Jane Doe making a donation for athletics.

Wake Forest contributors tend to be much more concerned with academics than athletics. They are the Vandy of the ACC.

Like Terry said, it looks like Grobe is staying put! ;sh Anyone that thought BAMA had it bad during the coaching searches hasn't kept up with the Arky search. It's 10 times worse than anything we had to go through. I'm almost feeling sorry for them at this point. They've been used by pretty much every candidate that they've looked at.

It's turned into a complete circus in Fayetteville. It's not like we didn't see this coming though. Grobe just did what everyone else has done to them. Used them to get more from their employers.

Surfing around an Arkansas forum I see a few of them blaming Sexton for this one. In fact, one guy posted Sexton-3, Arkansas-0.

Sexton doesn't represent Grobe. They've been calling for Nutt's head for a long, long time. And, I suspect Tubs would have had a raise and extension anyway.

The scout story on Wakeforest.scout.com says "sources confirm." It does not say Grobe says...

I will be shocked if he stays.

Same here. This is is just getting really sad. When the news of Grobe to Arkansas broke, I joked with one of my co-workers (Who is an Arkansas fan) that Griobe was just letting people think that he was leaving so Wake Forest would offer him more money. I never thought that would actually be the case.

:?:

Wake Forest head football coach Jim Grobe will stay at the University, sources confirmed Thursday morning. (9:45am EST)

According to sources at Arkansas and Wake Forest, Demon Deacon head coach Jim Grobe will remain at Wake Forest. Stay tuned to DeaconSports for further developments.

Yeah...not exactly loaded with information that confirms he is staying.

I will believe it when it comes from his mouth.

The significant phrase here is "Arkansas and WF sources indicate."

Ah, that was updated, when I saw it, it just said "sources."

If true, someone should be shot. Grobe was much more done than Rich Rod...down to the salary negotiations. The contract was being typed up...that kind of done.

I still have to hear it from Grobe. You don't turn down Arkansas from Wake Forest without mitigating circumstances...I did hear that he was angry about the leak and that his players were hearing about it from the media...but still, there was a handshake agreement in place. Of that, there is no doubt.

I don't have any Wake contacts other than academic...I will be really curious to hear the inside story on this if true.

I haven't been watching much ESPN, lately, but are they running entire skits on every show slamming Arkansas on why no on wants to coach there? Are they slamming the AD saying he's bungled the search over and over? If not, I'd say they're still getting off easy.

I’m not really sure what this says about their ability to pay a football coach, but I know tuition at Wake Forrest in 1993 was $27,000 per semester vs Alabama which was around $1200. That’s a pretty huge difference.

The thing I find odd about this whole deal is that NONE of the national news agencies are even reporting it “could” happen. Makes me think that maybe the Ark media’s sources aren’t that good.

Randy, I believe you meant $27,000 per year for only tuition in '93. Right now the tuition cost alone at WF is roughly $34,300 a year; that's only $1500 a year less than what tuition is at Duke University. When we began looking at colleges for our son, we were very surprised at WF's costs.

Bear Facts,
Did you like Wake's campus & location better than Duke's? I think Wake is a very pretty place. You're right though way too expensive. Damn those private schools. You can almost get 4 years tuition at a state school for the price of one year at a private school. Unreal!

Hey rmctide, I am gonna answer your question over at the Houndstooth to keep from highjacking this thread.
