šŸˆ The Coaching Carousel : UT promotes Kelsey Pope to WR coach

CHAPEL HILL – Two coaching veterans are returning to North Carolina's football program to strengthen the Tar Heels' defense.

Two-time National Champion Gene Chizik, a 26-year coaching veteran, has been named Carolina's assistant head coach for defense, and 17-year veteran Charlton Warren is the Tar Heels' new co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, Head Coach Mack Brown announced on Saturday. The duo returns to Chapel Hill after working together on the defensive staff during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Chizik, who is a national coach of the year award winner, a Broyles Award winner, and a Broyles Award finalist while at Carolina, reunites with Brown after previously serving as Brown's defensive coordinator at Texas in 2005-06. With his return to coaching, Chizik becomes one of six active coaches to have won a National Championship as a head coach (UNC has two of the six). Warren, who was named one of the nation's top recruiters by 247Sports, brings seven years of defensive-coordinator experience and 15 years of experience coaching in the secondary to Chapel Hill.

"We're excited to welcome Gene, his wife Jonna, and their three children, Landry Grace, Kennedy Danielle and Cally, back to the Carolina football family," Brown said. "Gene is one of college football's great defensive minds and we're excited that he's returning to lead our unit. He's spent the last five years in the media studying college football, so like me, he's had a chance to look at a number of different schemes, while staying on top of how the game has evolved over the last few years. Gene has been approached a number of times for head coach or defensive coordinator jobs during that time, but decided this was the best opportunity at the right time for him. Gene is also very familiar with our current staff, having coached with Tommy Thigpen, Tim Cross and Larry Porter, and having relationships with a number of our other coaches. He also has experience recruiting in our footprint, so we expect our success in that area to continue.

Thank goodness Cheezedip is going to UNC instead of coaching the Birmingham Stallions as was heavily rumored earlier this week!

Please take the job! Just stating my opinion.
Based on a running back with over 1200 yards, a Quarterback with over 4500 yards, and a receiver with over 1500 yards (with another over 1100?) Outside of percentage, Bryce is putting up Mac numbers. 200 and BRob is in Najee's numbers and it would take 350 for Jamo to hit DeVonta's numbers but still...damn.

(OT: This reminds me about Kiffin before when he was hired. I pointed to a back with a 1000, a QB with 4000, and a receiver at 1000. It was a game changer back then.)

2020 is considered the best offense Bama has fielded and the numbers come real close to matching.

I understand but for some reason, no idea what it is, I am not a fan.

I gotcha.

It's funny hearing a few talk about Bama not having success against Cincy in the passing game. We really don't find credit to the running game, we see talk about their corners (three TD's passing, BTW,) and a general "ho-hum" attitude towards their last game.

What's being missed here? Bryce made a lot of those running calls. The criticism, or analysis, on the offense falls close to equally.

Let me make a comparison, Mike. I've head "We're judging Bama on past Bama teams but that's not fair. But it's the reality so here's my opinion..."

It's not fair to judge this Bama team versus others.

It's not fair to judge the offense right now solely on the offensive coordinator. Bryce is making a lot of these calls.

It absolutely blows my mind how folks don't understand this. The kid makes adjustments ALL the time. I thought it was absolutely fantastic he had no problem handing off to Robinson against Cincy. I was surprised to see it actually but that is coaching too.

Bryce can do just about anything with this offense. That's a credit to him & the OC.

Let me tell you.. You want to feel stupid... go to Bama nation on FB, it's a group for Bama fans... 95 percent of the fans have no idea who is our OC, who is our starting TE, etc.. but wants our OC/DC gone... but can't justify the reason why though. BOB had his moments... but did Kiffin/ Sark had their moments throughout the season and we were like, " you gotta $%@$% me?" Sark became a legend in the playoff.. and I think BOB will be a legend as well... If I heard correctly, we're going to be suprised tonight.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with him either. I assumed Bryce was dialed back a little after what I was told was him making some calls in the A&M game, but apparently he was calling them in the Cotton Bowl. I thought it was genius to attack them where they couldn't hurt us, but allowed us to work on our run blocking for the Natty. Why even mess with their corners, their best players, when we don't have to. We made them useless, and it showed as we bled them out slowly. I expect the same tonight, take away their playmakers on defense and not run right into the teeth of it. Attack their vulnerabilities and I feel we have done that this year. Like @TerryP said, the yardage comparisons is almost unfathomable after what we saw, loved, and appreciated about last year's team. With how up and down this team was this year, it was the offense that stumbled far less.

Seems like this thread has gone of topic but I will go with it...

Yeah the numbers this year are exceptional and even more impressive with the challenges the OL had at times. Honestly the offense has been muuuuch better than I expected them to be with the exception of the Who and Barn games. The D is what disappointed me especially in the first half of the season. We need both to play well tonight.

Ex-Bama ST assistant and ex-NY Giants coach Joe Judge is out. I can't come close to naming them all but do know there's at least a half of a dozen former Bama staffers on the NY staff...or rather, that were on the staff including Kitchens, Pruitt, Burns, and a few others.

I expect to see people talking more about former guys back to Bama today especially in light of the news on Valai.

There's a couple that Saban would love to have back in an off the field role and a couple he'd love to have back on the field. Will be interesting to see if it works out with 1 guy in particular.
