🏈 The Coaching Carousel : UT promotes Kelsey Pope to WR coach

Oregon going with a DC as their HC, what an odd combination.

25 + 7 or 85, easy for a new HC to replace a significant portion of the team in a year. How many of these kids stick with the HC that was recruiting them at their new gigs?

Early Signing Period, they sure made this a mess.

I just don't have a big belief in young coaches being signed to big, successful schools. I know Oregon may be on the border of that, and I wish Lanning well. No problems with him. Obviously a good defensive coordinator but had lots of talent to work with. Not a great deal of experience to be taking over a major program. Sorry, but I predict failure.

I think USC got a pretty good hire, and I think Florida and Miami did well. Venables was a great hire for Oklahoma. Kelly at LSU, in my opinion, will not work well over the long haul. Just not a good fit.

Just as a side note:

Since the ESD was initiated we've seen, on average, roughly 10% of the top 100 left unsigned choosing to wait until February. This season that percentage is a little over 30%.

I'd assume these players are choosing to wait because of the upheaval we're seeing in head coaching positions: earlier than we've seen in the past. These firings and hirings, happening weeks earlier than normal, can be directly attributed to?

Last week Pate published a new pod covering how he thought the ESD, and the entire calendar for that matter, needs to be changed for college football. He makes one point I'd not considered before hearing his view: college football, literally, gave up its spotlight in the spring because Feb's signing day means to little now.

I think they're holding to see what comes from and goes to the transfer portal. aubrun should get a boost in RB recruiting, or they just may grab someone from the portal.

Out of the two "high targets" they are after this signing class one is leaning towards Tennessee and the other LSU. I see no other option, right now, than the portal.

I've only casually followed their class this year. I know they have 12 initials left on the board plus 'replacements' for their transfers. It's my opinion they are left with at least 10 initials left going into signing day (Feb.)

I also don't think anyone should be guessing right now: there's too much in the air. We're watching a coach who has expressed interest in other jobs after his first year and we're looking at two players, arguably their best, leaving.

And their spiritual leader Shivers is gone, too. Unless Penn State craters more than I think they will, aubrun will not win six games next year, and that may not even matter. Heck, San Jose State could surprise them. I don't see them being favored in but one game - Western KY - after September. 4-8 is probably more realistic. Wins Mercer, SJ State, Mizzou, Western KY; Losses Penn St, LSU, GA, Ole Miss, Arky, Miss State, aTm, Bama. Recruiting is sinking, so it looks like Harsin has a date with importality.

I think players are realizing that signing early is not a benefit to them in most cases. Unless you are going to start at the school in January, there is absolutely no reason to sign before February for the player.

Clemson has lost their longtime DC and now their AD. And it looks like their vegetal OC is also out the door. Let’s see how Dabo handles coaching turnover. Huge test for him. I think he and the Clempson faithful are going to learn to appreciate what CNS has done.
I hate to say it but Dabo had become pretty arrogant and this will definitely humble him. He’s now losing coaches, has players hitting the portal and recruits decommiting. When Saban lost so many staff members before Clemson thumped Bama in the NC, I thought Dabo would be magnanimous and say something like it could happen to any of us. Instead, he talked about how his coaches stay because he’s made it a family friendly job … implying Saban doesn’t care about his staff’s family … only winning. At least that’s how I took it. So, you’re right …. he’s about to get a real appreciation lesson on Saban. However, the vast majority of Clemson fans won’t. They’re the most jealous and envious fans of Bama I’ve come across on fan boards the past few years. And that’s saying something considering how jealous and envious the tigger fans at Auburn and LSU are and have been for a long time.

His goofy arrogance is why I did not want him in Tuscaloosa after Saban. I get this notion that he is in his position so he can have power over others and be told how great he is. Outside of his "we should be ranked", we haven't heard much at all from his big mouth this season while his team struggled. Also, I haven't heard a word from him after all his coached left, two five star receivers hit the portal to go along with his backup quarterback. It's easy to run your mouth when you're on top, but Dabo has a big hill to climb if he wants to back up the years of trash talking he's thrown out there. I don't see Clemson being ranked in the Top 10 or maybe even 15 in the pre-season polls.
