Unreal. U never thought he'd leave Notre Dame. Especially for a place like LSU. There's something to be said about him being a competitor leaving a sure thing at Notre Dame, but dang. He just dove into shark infested waters. Now he has to coach against Saban, Kiffin, and Jimbo, plus dealing with Kirbee wvery number of years. Gotta give him credit for not being scared like Lincoln.

I mentioned the day Mullen was fired that Kelly was wanting the UF job... not quite sure if it wasn't offered or what, but a move to a big job in the SEC was of interest to him. LSU lucked up. I think the UF job would have been a much better fit for him, but still a really good hire. Would expect Notre Dame to try and lure Luke Fickell now...

Been off of here for a few days, but wanted to say that UF did well, IMO. People who have been on Saban's staff with Napier think he has the highest ceiling of any of Saban's former assistants. The Gators first and foremost needed a recruiter, and he's a recruiter to his core. He also actually has a better understanding of Saban's "process" than others, a reason he was picky about the job he took (I would imagine though he made UF promise him several things). Kirby's job in the East just got more difficult on and off the field.

Strong hire for USC, but strong in the short term only most likely... I don't see it being a long term situations. Part of Riley's decision here is running from the SEC to a weaker conference. Another is getting into a fresh situation and out of a mess he's started to let ferment in Norman with his lack of discipline. He wants a national championship and will go all in on getting one, but if he does get one, or if the mountain reamins too steep for him, he will look for an out, likely to the NFL.

I'll give Kelly credit for seeking SEC jobs while others flame out or go running to the PAC 12. Honestly, we don't know what Kelly can do within an SEC framework. Yes, more difficult schedule than at ND and Cincy, and certainly scholarship limitations at ND affected him there.

We've created this massive arms race, and nation after nation has collapsed under our advance. Now, our Reagan is getting toward (not to) his end and the industry we've fostered may cause us angst post-Saban.

I wouldn't let his move to UF sway that opinion. Having some SEC experience there would be really good on the resume. He's also going to open even more recruiting doors which will give him master keys from coast to coast. If he's successful there, I can absolutely see him at UA down the road (especially if UF fails to deliver on any promises like they've done to recent coaches). My hope though (which is subject to change of course) is that Saban's retirement coincides with Matt Rhule's desire to return to college football.

I give BK a ton of credit for saying he wants to try the SEC, says something about his guts. I’m stunned that he’d leave the comforts of ND, but give him all the credit in the world.

I think post Saban is going to be difficult, mostly because although I think UA is the best job on the planet I don’t think many people are going to want to follow the GOAT, that’s got to be insane pressure

That was going to happen no matter what so I would say it will cause angst... With that said Bama should be able to attract an exceptional coach post-Saban. Hopefully the AD is doing his job and insuring he has a plan when this happens a looooong time from now .
