How much of this is a perception versus a reality?
Sure, it's harder to get into some schools than it is others: Vandy and Georgia Tech are different. It's harder to get into Stanford than it is Notre Dame.
However, what are these restrictions he's dealing with today? Several years ago when there were prop kids lacking a core class on scholarship that was a point. Today, you won't find Notre Dame signing a kid that doesn't have his core requirements met. Today, you'll find that across the board at every school: they can't sign them as well.
Take a minute and look over the top 100, or 200, on any recruiting site you choose. Look and see how many of these kids are being offered by Notre Dame. Where is the evidence of limitations when they are offering the same kids as the other schools?
NOW, there is a different academic calendar at Notre Dame and I'm sure that comes up on the recruiting trail. (ND requires full class loads during the season: other schools don't. Stanford allows their athletes to take some pretty easy courses while maintaining progress according to NCAA standards. It's easier at Stanford during the season than it is at ND.)
