🏈 Team update 2.0

I stand by what I said. I agree, it takes a special kind of guy to handle the QB job at Alabama and at most upper tier NCAA schools. Sabans record (or his OC/QB coach's) of picking them is mixed at best. He is better at hiring a guy who CAN pick them. He had Jimbo at LSU and he's had quite a mix of QB coaches at Bama, the most successful being Coach Mac and Kiffin. Don't forget besides the Nuss bomb, we had Applewhite as well. Maybe Saban defers to the OC on the QB targets, I don't know. All I'm saying is the track record is long and checkered. Saban brings in talented guys, no doubt, but it's amazing how many of them don't even pan out as serviceable. What's the ratio, 1 out 4? 5? It's bad. And hey, if that's our one Achilles heel in recruiting, so be it, I can live with that as he more than makes up for it. It's just surprising that for every AJ or Jamarcus Russell or Blake Barnett, there's a list of Cooper Batemans and Philip Sims 4 times as long. Obviously you can't find a superstar every year, but we seem to be having trouble even keeping a steady stream of game managers like G-Mac or JP Wilson or Matt Mauck. It appears to be a blind spot. Richt and Harbaugh have an uncanny knack for finding good to great QBs. It's their forte. Just don't ask them to spot a stud DB. It all evens out. It just appears to me that Nick needs to keep the right guy at QB coach because he's not going to compensate for a weak link there. Same with kickers but we all have heard the Booby Williams rant all too often.

let's get back on topic before it gets off track. Oh nevermind.

It's Thursday.. Any idea who will start at the scrimmage this Saturday? Will they follow the same format as last scrimmage ( Controlled playcalling, RBs limited touches, etc) I would love to see Gore getting some serious looks.

Yeah 1's will start, if you mean qb, jake will likely come out first. No format will be more game like. So defense won't know everything going on.

Per Aaron Suttles, Tidesorts.com

The team worked outside on an overcast afternoon, the second practice since the fall semester began. Here it was I saw during the limited viewing period.

I saw a lot of dropped passes from receivers. It's important to keep in mind that it wasn't the whole practice, but I'd be anxious to know what Saban thought of the practice. It's also probably wise to mention that the team has only had one day off since the start of camp. Mental and physical fatigue has to be a factor at this point.

The quarterbacks were again split into two groups: Jake Coker/Alec Morris/Cooper Bateman and David Cornwell/Blake Barnett. Nothing new to report there.

The defensive linemen went through two-man drills in the following order: Jarren Reed/A'Shawn Robinson, Dalvin Tomlinson/Jonathan Allen, Darren Lake/D.J. Pettway, O.J. Smith/Josh Frazier, Da'Shawn Hand/Daron Payne.

Calvin Ridley is so smooth coming in and out of his breaks. There isn't a lot of wasted motion. I'm particularly intrigued to see him in game action.

Raheem Falkins was at practice in a black jersey and walking boot, but he did not go through any drills.

Up next: Practice Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday's scrimmage is a great opportunity for anybody that wants to take the QB job. All the chips are on the table. Turn in a good performance and turn a few heads and chances are you win the job for now. I would relish that chance if I were Morris or Barnett. I'd be breaking down film on our own defense every night trying to gain an edge. Who could ask for a better scenario than that?

I wish you guys would stop slobbing del Rio's knob. Yes we didn't need to spend a scholarship on him. Ultimately, the argument is moot anyway because the guy has transferred twice, and been a walk-on at all three places, so apparently not being given a scholarship is NOT the reason he left Bama. I'm not sure he's that damn good either, which is probably the reason he keeps transferring. Ie., he's looking for a team that's thinner at QB and he's going to have a better chance to play.

Rick and Morty is a new one that's really good.

5 will get you 10 that Coach comes out of Saturday scrimmage with 2 who will get the 1st team reps from then on. My money is on Coker and Morris. I would also bet Coker and Morris rotate by quarters for the Wisky opener. I think the true competition has been who would be the (2) to Coker's (1)

And on the subject of "Saban's QB's" he has had 3 that he picked. 2 of them helped win 3 NCs. 1 was instrumental in getting the team into the inaugural CFB playoff. I think he has done pretty well
