Although known as the Utes, the University of Utah employs an eagle named Swoop as its mascot at basketball, football and baseball games. The University of Utah introduced this mascot in 1987, with permission from the Ute Tribal Council. Swoop, represents the red tailed hawk, a bird indigenous to the state of Utah.
