🏈 Saban's mindset

Why would Saban have more confidence in a epic 56 yard field goal than allowing a Heisman hopefull to carry the team in an overtime victory? Let AJ earn his Heisman chances instead of throwing it away. He had no chance at that field goal ever.

Doesn't really seem like a very professional decision on coaches part.Any chances for an apology? Would love to see him man up but not expecting it. Still behind my team 100 percent. Roll Tide!

He will most certainly never apologize, I dont want nor need one. Just learn from it and get even better. He said in the presser that Griffith hits em from 60 yards in practice but he knows better than that. This aint practice. It was a mistake, he will move on and grow from it. Hopefully at Bama.

No choice but to learn and move on!
Would love to know how many 60 yarders out of ten he hits in practice. Bets it's not many. My odds would of been with AJ and I'm sure AJ would of appreciated the opportunity.

That's a bet I'd take...and win.

You've been around here long enough for me to say this with confidence. When Saban sent Adam on the field you thought, "is this really going to be another Tiffin ending to a Bama / Auburn game?"

In the end, just like Tiffin's kick, this game is going to go down in history alongside "Wrong Way Bo," and "Punt Bama Punt."

For maybe 3 seconds, I went from shock/anger at Saban for not letting AJ take a shot, to hope/confidence that this would be a miracle FG. I was torn between "WTF IS HE DOING" and "could this be a genius move??". I turned off the TV when the returner was 1/4 down the field.

No question that this play/game are historic. Craziest ending ever to the biggest Iron Bowl matchup ever. Wonder what it will be nicknamed.

Electing a 56-yard field goal attempt over OT with a Heisamn candidate and a top ranked red zone defense will go down in Bama history as one of Saban's great blunders. And that's not second guessing. It's plain ole math!

My thoughts as well.

People can say how good this kicker might be in practice but I know I've never seen him kick one in a game, especially in one that big. I do know that I've seen AJ pull a rabbit out of his hat a few times for us over the years when it's all on the line. I would of much rather just took it to OT with my seasoned veteran QB than try a fifty freaking seven yard field goal with a redshirt freshman....but that's just me and I ain't some coach.

On an unrelated rant: The sun came up today. Yes I will have to hear it from Barn coworkers but you know what? We've had an unbelievable run! I'm happy and thankful we've came this far. I'm sure we will once again be fighting at the top very soon. I was so pissed when he was running down the sideline that I turned the TV off. I wanted to blow up and loose my cool but my 4 year old daughter did something awesome. She stopped me in my pacing anger and said good night daddy and wanted a hug. At that point I just didn't even care about football and just happy my life is where it's at. Alabama football is a great thing and a huge part of my life but I think this season with all its ups and downs has allowed me to give up some of that rope I tried to hold so tight. Don't get me wrong I love Alabama football just as much as the biggest fan but football in general does not make or break my attitude on life like it used to when I was younger. I'm just proud of our guys for all their accomplishments and hope they keep their head up. They have a lot to be proud of and thankful for!! Just remember the big picture....it's just a game.

You both said it all :)

Y'ah we all know. The "after-loss-football-Zen-speech' was written many times last night during the great Bamadrill exodus debacle. We're all up to speed with it now.
Huh? Who or what is a bamadrill? Anyways, I'm not speaking for anyone else or trying to pull some veil over. If people want to live in misery when there's a loss or just a feeling relief when there is a win then that's when it's time to take a few steps back. I am certainly not trying to speak for anyone else. I'm just speaking for myself and how I've slowly over the years not let outcomes in games affect my personal life. But hey, if that's what people want then live that way. I ain't stopping you.

He was a member (now ex-member) who went off the rails last night, total Walmart Black Friday, swearing, cursing, attacking, raging with unacceptable language to Phiilygirl at first but then anyone within keyboard range. LMAO. People who can't get a grip on their emotions are a fountain of amusement to me.

Getting back to the original post of this thread.

A top ranked red zone defense that couldn't stop the run with an offense that wasn't running the ball well?

Auburn has returned four attempted field goals for a touchdown FOUR times in a hundred and twenty years of football.

Let me be more clear here. That's FOUR times in almost 1200 football games.

Do the math, it's simple.

Which carried the greater odds?

The odds(math) of that ball ever reaching the goal post are ridiculous, I've never seen one made from that distance in my lifetime. Except maybe on the internet with a player all alone in practice that happened to video his one make, under zero pressure. I've seen plenty of Hail Marys work out positive results over the years though. Just get it to overtime for petes sake. Is what it is.

I understand the arguments in favor of letting AJ take one more shot at the end zone prior to end regulation play, but I still don't fault CNS for going with Griffith and the FG attempt. Probably 99.9% of the time, in any game, if the kicker misses, the game just goes into overtime - with all the risks and opportunities that that scenario entails. What I do find disturbing is the overall low quality of preparation exhibited by Alabama throughout the game, that coupled with multiple in-game coaching decisions made prior to the 57 yard FG attempt. Where the heck was Kenyan Drake for most of the game? A guy is averaging over 8 yards per carry, seems not to be hurt, and yet is standing on the sidelines most of the game. Yes, yes, the history of fumbling, but TJ was equally guilty in that respect during the latter part of the season. After we go up by two touchdowns in the first half, why does the defense stand around like they are waiting for Christmas to arrive while Auburn scores another touchdown? For me, the most critical moment in the game - and the most telling failure point for Alabama - was the inability to pick up points (or even get a first down) after stopping Auburn on 4th down at their own 35 (or whatever it was) when we are up 28-21. That was the last/best opportunity to seal the deal. Even getting close enough for a chip-shot FG would probably have been enough, but we run TJ up the middle for no gain on 4th down. Game over.

The more I read about it and think about it .. What options did CNS have?

1. AJ and Hail Mary
2. FG attempt with Cade
3. FG attempt with RS frosh
4. Trick play?
5. Rushing play?
6. Take a knee

The option with a decent/slim chance of success, and smallest risk overall .. Attempting a FG.

Hail Mary is always risky. And would have likely ended in OT anyway. Maybe even a pick six. Not a great way for AJ to end his regular season career. This is what a majority of coaches would have attempted, in my opinion.

FG attempt with Cade? Cade blew 3 shots already. He lost any vote of confidence his way.

FG attempt with RS frosh? Stunt. If made, would go down in history. If missed, head to OT. If caught, stop the runner. Chances of what actually happened, happening were a gazillion to one ..

Trick? Maybe some lateral action, or a weird flea flicker, I don't know. Something flashy. Likely ending in a tackle or bat down or INT. just prolongs inevitable of OT, really.

Rush? Give Yeldon the ball, pray, but get real, he wouldn't go 57 yards. Who in their right mind would rush with a tie game, 1 second left, and 57 yards to cover?

Knee? Probably the safest, but weakest choice. But then you are sent to OT .. And let's be real, I don't believe we would have won this in OT. Auburn legit had everything going for them and we had nothing.

So .. He may not have made the popular choice .. But it carried the smallest risk. Unfortunately that .000001% chance of someone returning it for a TD .. Well, the odds were odd haha.

I didn't watch most of the TD run but that field looked empty. Where were our guys? I turned off the TV once I saw a wide open lane ..

I don't know. You also have to factor that a blocked FG can be ran back just as the likelihood an interception could turn into a pick six. I don't know what would of happened in OT. We had everything starting to go our way until we shot ourselves in the foot with mental mistakes (last holding call was the nail straw). With Cade not having a good night it just killed our chance to get out of there with 3 more on the board. It is what it is and Auburn has just had a year go their way. We can only hope they don't make it to the big dance. Ugh I'm getting sick at my stomach just thinking about it.

Today rather than mope around the house thinking of all the scenarios that could have been, I just put up the Christmas tree and decorated with my daughter and wife. It kept our minds off it and lessened the sting of reality. I will say the playoff system can't get here soon enough though :icon_lol:
