🏈 QB Next Year: Sims or McCarron?

People may get angry that I may be looking too far into the future, but whenever there's a pending QB battle it's always an so interesting to speculate/ see how it will pan out. So this coming Spring we'll surely have a very exciting QB battle in Tuscaloosa, who do you think wins it?? Do you think it changes the offense at all??

And as a side note: my own prediction is a strong one, and it's this: Phil Sims wins it (as I think Saban may have predicted in bringing him in in the Spring) and becomes Alabama's version of $cam-- the jubilant fan-pleasing QB that is capable of putting the team on his shoulders and winning. I think McCarron has it...at least its his to lose. He as an extra year in the system many more snaps under his belt. A second string QB has to prepare like his is going in. A third string QB has to prepare like he wants to compete for the starting job next year. That will make a difference for A.J.

Several weeks ago Saban was asked about AJ and his responce was basically that AJ's ability was never any question, just decision making.....and when asked about Sims, Saban stated he was ready to play. Ive heard rumblings that the team really likes Sims alot...not that there is a problem with AJ but the team as a whole thinks alot of Sims.

i think sims is more of a pocket passer. and aint near as nice looking as cammie.

I agree with you Cobra. I think we see them rotate around for a few series at a time and then settle with who has the hot hand. Either way, it will be nice to have 2 stout QBs running the show.

I have never been a fan of a 2 QB system, but it will be difficult to keep one of these guys off the field.

god, i hope ur wrong. the 2-qb system rarely ever works imo and i cant stand it. just hope one of them wins it outright, dont care which one tho i think AJ will eventually get the job. kid has too much talent.

You guys might be right, but I don't remember Saban ever using 2 different QB's on a regular basis like LSU has done this year or SOS used to do very regularly. He seems to me to like to have one guy be The Guy, and only use the #2 QB in mop up or if th the #1 gets hurt.

You may be right Bo. I don't recall him using it. I know that he hasn't really had the luxury of trying it here until now. Whom ever gets the starting nod, good luck. It will be tough sitting one of those two guys and still giving enough mo up duty to, to keep them content IMO.

While the two qb system is pretty much out of vogue now, Bryant used it with great success in the sixties, seventies and eighties.
It was never a case of mediocre typt quarterback either. Think Namath-Sloan, Sloan-Stabler, Todd-Rutledge, Rutledge-Shealey.

Sims and McCarron are similar types. Both have great arms and are primarily pocket passers who run when they have to. A J has the experience edge, but I'm looking forward to them battling it out in the spring. Competition will make them both better.

So, the $cam reference might not have been the best, but the point was that fans would fall in love with Sims and how he carries himself, he says in the interview that he loves football and he loves playing and he just wants to get out there, so in that regard he'll be like Newton-- everybody will just love how Sims is... and he'll be able to WIN games for us, unlike GMac is now just "not losing it for us."

A lot of people talk about experience going into this, sure AJ has had something like 100 snaps I'd say, but is his experience level so great that Sims, who runs the scout team, will just be at a total disadvantage with no way to make up ground?? I dont think so, AJ does have more experience but Sims will still be going into his 2nd Spring training and summer workouts-- he knows his way around Alabama football by now.

Oh, and the 2 QB system, I tend to agree with Bo and Birdman, I can't stand a 2 QB system, the whole time 1 is out there we'll be saying that "2 could have made that play" and vice versa, plus it really doesnt allow the players to get comfortable with one person and his leadership style-- things I think Coach Saban realizes-- so I think he'll have to choose (it'll be bad for one QB but good for us I guess, whoever's out there will be the one that should be playing)

I'd bet on McCarron just because he's been in the system longer. Now he might get benched during the season if he plays poorly, but I can't see any way Saban starts the younger guy who wasn't even 2nd string last year.

2 things that I hate about this quote:

1) It diminishes what Greg has done. He was way more than a "don't lose it for us QB" this year. Look at his performances in the IB and SECCG last year. Greg McElroy is the most undersappreciated player since I've been following Bama football (not that long).

2) You have no clue whatsoever how Sims will perform in a real game, neither do I. We really don't even know how AJ will perform over the course of an entire game against SEC competition. I think he'd be fine against the OOC scrubs.

There's just something about Bama fans and QBs. The guy on the bench is always better than the guy in the game. I'm sure if AJ has a bad game, fans will be calling for Sims in no time.

I doubt seriuosly that Sims spent time with the scout team. I think that duty would've fallen more on the shoulders of Oglivie and others. Normally, your top 3 qbs stay with the offense and the other qbs run the scout. I was one of those other qbs and I learned alot of different plays that weren't in our system.

I thought it was a fact that Sims ran the scout team last year? I definitely could be wrong though.

Didn't AJ run the scout team last year for a while? I know it wasn't the whole season, but I thought he started there.

When you are a 2 or 3, you get reps with the second team offense. 2 gets a few reps with ones but primarily with the 2s and the 3 gets some reps. Blake Sims did run some of the scout qb when they were preparing for the Barn. You often try to get a similar athlete to run the position.

I dont really see how its possible that Sims was running the scout team last year since he was in high school last year. lol

Another thing on the 2-QB system, usually when that works out its more one guy is a good/great passer and the other guy is a good/great runner (I think I've even heard Saban allude to this). LSU's QBs this year for example or when we used Zow and Watts back in the day, or even Watts and Brodie. Sims & AJ are both Pro-Style QBs who run when/if they have to, but are more pocket passers.

Just my opinion--I think it is McCarron and it isn't close. Sims has a nice arm but ZERO game experience. McCarron has at least been on the field and such this year. Didn't I hear that Saban had said if GMac had gone down in Pasadena last year that they would've burned AJ's redshirt to play him instead of Star Jackson?

Sims will see the field some, I don't think Saban will have a true two-QB system. Think about it this way--if Julio and Mark both leave, do you also want a QB on the field that has not played outside of the practice field? Sims will have his chance, I just don't think it will be next year.
