Eddie Jackson is one that comes to mind. You remember how Eddie moved from corner to safety? He was better as S, had the skills of a corner, and gave Bama a "hybrid nickel" and a "hybrid dime." It's about guys who can hit and play the run like a linebacker but their physically like a safety a safety or a corner who can play safety: between two body types hence "tweener."
UofSC had a safety that was a perfect example of a hybrid player in a nickel/pass defense set. I can't recall what they called the positionāin the same sense Bama uses STAR and MONEYābut it was a mix between a linebacker playing safety.
As simply as I can put it with my limited understanding it's a lot like seeing guys playing DE and DT: that's a hybrid defensive lineman. Bama has played nickel with five corners: a hybrid nickel (did it safety heavy and got burned a lot when Vinnie was in Tuscaloosa.)
In my view, itās like the 3-3-5 defenses that undersized teams play, constantly bringing blitzes from all over hoping to gain some advantage over going head to head.
Doesnāt just have to be defense either. Look at these TEs now, along with WRs. I like @It Takes Eleven pointing out the 3-3-5 defense. The scheme is meant to attack and not sit and take on offenses, use more hybrid types either safety types as outside LBs or bigger LBs as DEs to give the ability to go 5 man front and slide a safety into the box for an old 5-2 look. Kids like those often give you more flexibility and allow you to play different looks without subbing.
