🏈 Listening to a Conversation about the team today....

I was caught up in a conversation in my office today with someone who was a student back in the 1970's at THE U of A. He stated that it's good to think back and remember the days when Coach Bryant roamed the sidelines, but he said he remembers plenty of games when the Tide did not play worth a flip, and still won, and sometimes even lost. True enough, they didn't lose to La Tech or Tulane or La Monroe (what is it with schools from La?)

Among all those great Bama teams of the 1960's and 1970's, there were some lackluster performances mixed in, i'm sure.

1974, I think it was, they played a really bad FSU team (pre Bowden). Gary Rutledge and Richard Todd, the 1st two QBs, were out with injuroes, but surely we'd be able to take care of FSU with #3 and #4 (Robert Fraley and Jack O'Rear.) We darn near didn't FSU got a TD and we couldn't move the ball a lick. They led 7-3 late, but we had them pinned inside their 10 on 4th down. They chose to take a safety rather than risk a big return or a blocked punt. We got a good return, made two 1st downs, and kicked a 40 something yard field goal to win 8-7. That turned out to be a very good team by year's end.
