College Football Top 25 Rankings for 2022​

1. Alabama​

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-8
Key Incoming Transfers: RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Tyler Harrell, WR Jermaine Burton, OL Tyler Steen, CB Eli Ricks

The path to a national title once again runs through Tuscaloosa, as Alabama is Athlon's pick to win it all in 2022. Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 4,872 yards and 47 scores last season and returns to defend his Heisman Trophy with a revamped cast of skill players. The additions of Burton (Georgia) and Harrell (Louisville) add much-needed experience and steady wide receivers for Young - the best QB in college football. Gibbs (a transfer from Georgia Tech) should be an all-around weapon at running back for coordinator Bill O'Brien. The offensive line (41 sacks allowed) was the biggest weakness last year and still has question marks with left tackle Evan Neal off to the NFL. The addition of Vanderbilt transfer Tyler Steen should help at tackle, and the pieces are in place for a solid interior. New position coach Eric Wolford also is a reason to believe this group will stabilize in '22. The outlook on Alabama's defense is similar to the offense: Loaded. Will Anderson Jr. (33.5 TFL) returns to dominate the line of scrimmage with running mates Dallas Turner (8.5 sacks) and Henry To'o-To'o joining him at linebacker. Phidarian Mathis must be replaced up front, but the line is still in good shape, especially with Byron Young, DJ Dale and Tim Smith returning. Former LSU starter Ricks joins a loaded secondary already featuring safeties Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.
