šŸˆ Ken Rogers: Grant has Tide hoping for NCAA berth (moved here for a football thread)

Have you considered what an impact Grant has had on the football program, specifically recruiting at this time of the year?

Think about what an experience those kids had this weekend...some, basketball players themselves. Others, you know they know the game...

i am really excited about bama basketball.. it just hasn't been the same since wimp retired..

i agree about the recruiting... i watched horry and spreewell play at coleman a few times that place can get pretty rowdy.. i am sure the recruits are eating it up..

There were recruits there yesterday. Problem was I couldn't tell if they were basketball or football recruits. I assume the ones on the court were basketball recruits. I don't think they'd bring the football ones down on the court. Could be wrong though.

The Basketball-helping-Football comment seems odd to me. If this were then case then Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina...should be doing better on the gridiron.

That are a few programs that enjoy quality Basketball and Football, but for each of those there are many more schools that do not. Bama and Tennessee are the SEC Football programs with the longest pedigree, but enjoy Basketball success only sporatically. The ACC has its Kings of Football (VaTech, FSU) and Kings of Basketball (Duke, N.Carolina). The Pac10 sees their Arizona's reeping revenge in February for the beatings they took from USC back in September. The same can be said for Michigan State and Michigan.

I simply see that there are Football Schools and Basketball schools, and this truth seems to work counter that one builds the other. IMHO.

On the other hand you see success at UF, Texas, and other schools when both programs do well.

UNC would have had a hell of a football team this year but lost a couple of game changers due to the party in Miami.

Take Notre Dame. Hell of a basketball team there and the only thing they've been missing is a quality head coach for football.

Let me take it one step further. Greene, a basketball player, committed this weekend. You think the win over Georgia—his home state school—didn't make an impression on him this weekend?

People have talked about our success, overall, as an Athletic Department over the last decade. We are seeing how one program can boost another...and vice-versa.

You could tell things were testy between Saban and Gottfried when Gottfried was still here. CNS seems very fond of the idea of bringing a prized recruit to a packed housse basketball game with a crowd that is very jacked up.

An old friend of mine (who is sadly an Aubie) was talking about this issue. He had seen an article about a high profile basketball recruit showing up at a Ky basketball game and a crowd of 23,000 chanting his name. He mentioned that Auburn could do that as well, only the kid would have to show up for 5 or 6 games.

I am super impressed with Grant and loved him addressing the crowd after the game. He has our program headed in the right direction. His first offseason and season were rough and lots of dead wood was removed. I'm sure that was a very rough time for the players that decided to stay and work. For the ones that did at least they have an SEC West title for show for it. For the younger guys who knows? An outright SEC title is certainly not out of the discussion for the future.

I haven't been to Coleman since the renovation. It's certainly a quality facility. I hope we made the right move by staying there instead of starting over like Auburn (little different situation though). I haven't travelled around the SEC to know the answer to that question though.

I was disappointed that the game had lots of no-shows. It was technically a sellout yet at tip-off there were empty seats. Most disturbing was the student section. Some empties there - inexcusable regardless of weather or start time. Just inexcusable! Our crowd needs a little help much of the time, but I will say when the play is elevated the crowd becomes elevated as well. There were times Sat. that I couldn't hear myself think. Nothing like football (mind you) but certainly a promising start. Roll Tide!

I was getting a little antsy myself Joe. I was thinking that if they BOTH went out, we were in BIG TROUBLE! Losing Hines with 6+ minutes didn't help me much!

Yeah, I did notice the foul board and was concerned. Maybe I don't remember enough about basketball or maybe Coach told him "it's your last game, keep playing", but I was afraid Green would be hesitant and less aggressive after those 4 fouls. Again, maybe I'm wrong, stupid or both, but I was glad that Green continued to play aggressive despite those fouls. He seemed to keep to his game. Hines, on the other hand, got careless on his 5th. That wasn't a smart foul, but it was his last home game so I couldn't be upset with him. He was playing hard, and it was just one of those things. The crowd rewarded him greatly for his years on the court.

Alot of times, players do get hesitant when they pick up their 4th. Hines did indeed get a bit careless but he was going hard trying to make a play. When I coached, I used to get pissed at those frustration fouls and the lack of hussle fouls. I would reward those guys that were going as hard as they could, trying to make plays and picked up a foul. I always screamed for them to keep working hard, pumping my fists, clapping my hands, and give them a CNS "teaching moment with AJ"!
I couldn't agree more about the crowd giving Hines a deserved ovation. Being an in-state product, he had to work hard to be able to play here and take the long and winding road to T'town.

Green has gotten better about being able to play hard while he is in foul trouble. Now if he could learn not to get those chippy little fouls. He ahd one at the half, then picked up a couple of quick ones fairly early in the second and went to the bench. he came back, got his 4th, then went back to the pines for a while.

I'm glad that I did not get to find out what his choice would have been, but Grant would have had a tough decision if Green had fouled out as well. Hankerson has a sturdy body, but he is only 6'5". Carter and Engstrom are both bigger, but neither has seen the court in a key situation this year, and really haven't gotten much playing time since the conference season started.
