To me it is common sense and not a dig at CKD. I think he will be fine and probably sooner rather than later as he inherited a great situation. Bottom line if D does not get better and they do not clean up the penatlies we are going to have way more of these slip ups than any of us are comfortable with.

Not sure that would be a good thing at a program as successful as Bama under CNS. I would say the opposite would be the case, they would know how to prepare, improve and win because of the previous coach. How else can you explain Les Miles winning at LSU?

There may be issues in getting the guys to do it their way…or confusion in the schemes because of the way they were taught… Hardheaded or stubborn problems… who knows..

Indeed from learning CKD's system. That is the foundation of why I said there would be hiccups in year one until they have enough muscle memory so they can play fast. The bigger question for me is what is going on with the D? I am sure a new system is part of it but that is not the only thing with how they are performing. Everbody decided to bash CNS for the complexity of his D and praise Womack for its simplicity. So if it is simple and not hard to learn then it should not be this bad unless the simplicity also makes it easier to create a game plan against it. I believe it was @Brandon Van de Graaff that said we would get frustrated because at times the D would not be able to get off the field. Turns out that was an understatement.

It was a very reasonable stance, and one I echoed some, but to a much lesser degree, leading into the season. I've tried to tap the breaks a few times here and there, especially on the last couple of game prediction/discussion threads when I felt expectations were a tad overzealous (not that I expected Bama to lose to Vandy by any means). While I still believe the potential for this team remains very high, it also coincides with almost equal levels of volatility. I will say, I expected things to be trending better in that department than they are after this weekend, but I also can't say it's shocking, nor is it a reason for panic.

I get it. But then. I don't.

I haven't watched the game. I have noticed one thing about comments about the game. The people jumping up and down about the 12 team playoffs are the same ones screaming about a loss.

Yeah the secondary I expected more growing pains. It is the other areas of the D that should be better that have been shocking.

There's going to be some cuts received there, simply because of that. Over time, that will, or certainly should, improve. On the other hand, and more concerning to me, the play of Moore and Saab has been a bit more inconsistent overall than I was expecting. Perhaps my expectations were too high though, and it is fair to point out, that it's a new system for both. However they should be playing pretty fast in it at this point, IMO.

Lastly, for the last 6 quarters, Wommack has looked reactionary, at best. He's got to find some ways to get stops when it matters. As bad as the DL has been at times. As bad as the backend has been at times. Hell, as bad as the luck in some cases has been at times... Wommack appears to have a pretty weak grip on things right now. Whether he realizes it or not, and I'm sure he does, there is a substantial amount of pressure on him at this point to get this defense molded into a solid unit. They don't have to be top 10 with the caliber of the Bama offense, but what they can't be is weak to the point that they put them team in hole after hole, week after week.

Agree, they have to get better. They are much worse than expected and as good as the offense is an will be. Right now the D is equally as bad so it is a draw even against a team like Vandy. Then penalties and turnovers flip the balance.

One last thoght even Pete G's defenses were better than this and they were subpar. I know many do not agree with that but that is how I saw it. Right now a D on par with Petes would be sufficient with the ceiling for this offense.

@Brandon Van de Graaff I agree with you.

There are times where I'm looking at the formation and I'm thinking why we have one safety high at time and I would say, "They are fixing to throw a deep pass." and it would turns out to be true. Wommack defense works well when you have a good CB play, allowing Safety to play free. You have a freshman at CB, whos' getting beat on long play. teams are starting to figure that out.

DL/lB is too inconsistent.

There is simple fix that's out there. you have a legend coach on the phone, you speak to him couple times a week. Wommack just need to utilize Saban's advice better. Wommack issues is mostly on 3rd downs. Why are you playing zone on 3rd down, that's a free play for 1st down given how our defense is. Why cant you make the pocket collaspe and make it hard for Vandy QB to run? Force erratic throws? Wommack is acting like he doesnt know how to coach, and I think he just need to let loose and just go after QB more.

I know Wommack was shocked and he held back lot of stuff against Vandy, but He knew with new offense at Vandy, he should've put in more effort to make sure defense was in good spot. they werent. So I think they correct lot of things this weekend and we'll see how this team shapes up against Tennesee.

Strong runs different defense. I don't want former coaches who was at alabama before to come back and coach Defense. Ive had enough of that.
