📝 January Recruiting

What are the NCAA Rules regarding hiring a HS coach especially when it appears to be a "package" deal? probably ok with the package, but seems there are restrictions about recruiting the HS for a year or two? Wasn't this how Gus got hired at Arky? He brought his QB with him? Wonder if that was a bait and switch for Peterson's benefit or just a seeming done deal that was a figment of the press's mind?
IF a school hires a high school coach to an off the field position they can't recruit kids from his old employer. The only way Peterson and Propst could have ended up at UT was for Propst to get one of the 10 on the field positions.

The restrictions you've mentioned cover a four year window: two years before and after the signing date.

IF Propst would have been hired at UT in an off the field position and Peterson were to have signed a NLI he would be ineligible immediately. So, the punishment comes down on the kid, not the school, according to the way the rules are written.

The Rule:

[Federated provision, FBS and FCS, divided vote]

11.4 Employment of High School, Preparatory School or Two-Year College Coaches, or Other Individuals Associated With Prospective Student-Athletes.

[11.4.1 through 11.4.2 unchanged.]

11.4.3 Individual Associated with a Prospective Student-Athlete -- Football. In football, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete's anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete's actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (or enter into a contract for future employment with) an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position or in a strength and conditioning staff position.

11.4.3.1 Application. A violation of Bylaw 11.4.3 occurs if an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete (see Bylaw 13.02.19) is employed by the institution and, at the time of employment, a student-athlete who enrolled at the institution in the previous two years (and remains enrolled at the institution) was a prospective student-athlete by which the individual meets the definition of an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete. A violation of Bylaw 11.4.3 also occurs if an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete is employed and, within two years after such employment, a prospective student-athlete by which the individual meets the definition of an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete enrolls as a full-time student in a regular academic term at the institution. In either case, the student-athlete becomes ineligible for intercollegiate competition unless eligibility is restored by the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement.

11.4.3.2 Exception -- Reassignment. An institution may reassign an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete from a countable coaching staff position to a noncoaching staff position or strength and conditioning staff position, provided the individual has been a countable coach at the institution for at least the previous two academic years.

I think it makes a lot of sense. These 5 stars won't stick around and play TEAM ball. We need some signal callers that have the intangibles to read defenses, hit what they're aiming at and lead young men. Great QBs, more so than any other position on the field, come in a lot of different packages, I hope we get one in this guy.

There certainly was quite a few suggesting there might be a connection. I didn't see many mention the relationship with Pruitt although there were a few. I saw very, very few mention that Sherrer was his primary recruiter for UGA and he's on the Vol staff now as well. And, that's leaving out a few of the kids who played at Colquitt who are not at UT.

Knew Pruitt had been his primary for the longest and that Sherrer was primary while at UGA. Peterson has mentioned a couple of times that a couple of his old Colquitt teammates are at UT now. I know it is about relationships but these kids need to look more into the school and the program. Too many coaches bounce around to even stay 3-4 years during the kids time there.

Why on earth is the staff recruiting such a lowly ranked guy? They should have five stars just beating down the door for a spot.

5* don't always pan out, see Blake Barnett, Star Jackson, Cooper Bateman, David Cornwell. Not that all were 5*, but they were all highly ranked. Some of these lesser ranked or known kids get overlooked because they can't hit all of the camp circuits or they don't fit the 6' 4" 220 mold. This Purdy kid listed as 6'1 197 played at the highest class in Arizona. He threw 57 TDs, 4000+ yards, ran for another 1000+ yards and 10-15 TDs as well. Besides that, these lesser ranked kids come with a chip on their shoulder to prove they belong and don't feel entitled.

The vast majority of these five guys also come with an attitude they'll be (or deserve to be) getting a shot at the starting job as soon as they set foot on campus. (I don't mean "attitude" to carry a bad connotation. )

SECPOTY and NCMVP ...the latter happens to be a true sophomore. Simply put, there aren't five star QB's out there that are willing to sit for three years waiting for an injury to happen.

Now...

Both Saban and Daboll have worked with Purdy. Again, with QB's, it's a situation where they've seen the kid and worked with them in camps. They told Purdy a while back that they wanted him to wait on making a commitment until they had time to evaluate him more. He agreed, and here we are. It's my understanding there's about a half of a dozen, or more, of his immediate family that are alumni.

Just watched his senior highlight film and wow! This guy has great arm strength, accuracy and is mobile. He keeps his eyes down field when the first option breaks down and isn't looking to run at the first sign of trouble. He's a bigger version of Tate Martell. Regardless, I'm hoping we can bring in the BEAR's grandson and/or Tua's little brother next year.

A few thoughts running into a big weekend.

We know the number is eight. With the reports on Purdy, who I believe will sign with Bama, we're looking at seven spots remaining.

It's my understanding ...

The staff wants one more on the offensive line. We've talked about Petit-Frere here for quite some time. I've seen it suggested on a few places this one is coming down to an Ohio State vs Michigan battle. I don't think that's the entire case and it certainly seems like the Bama staff likes their changes with him. As mentioned earlier in this thread he's due in Tuscaloosa this weekend. It's important to note he has an official visit set for Ohio State before signing day. I'm seeing this one as one we'll watch on the 7th.

We're looking at Bama signing two more on the defensive line. Earlier in this thread it was posted that Tyler Friday is scheduled to announce this week. I suspect we see Friday commit to Ohio State Saturday. Bobby Brown is committed and from reports it's solid. (Fisher still doing his thing but one of his pitches, "Saban's last stand" has fallen on its face. I mentioned Langham in the last few days. He's not seen as an immediate impact type of guy but evaluations have him showing a lot of potential down the road. Word has it that Michael Thompson is still on the radar. Personally, give me Brown and Langham and call it a day for the DL in this class.

Linebackers? :bandhead: Good luck with your guesses here. While people are talking about Peterson (whom I expect to remain committed to UT) and Walker (who I think will eventually flip to UGA) I'd suggest you watch Vernon Jackson as well. Both home schools are in the picture and making up ground. Out of the eight spots do we end up with no more linebackers added? 'fraid it's a real possibility.

Give me two of them. Surtain and Campbell in town this weekend, Smith and Taylor-Stuart coming in on the 26th. That leaves us with six if Bama doesn't sign any more linebackers. I'm leaning this direction--no linebackers signed--due to something mentioned earlier, "Saban's last stand."

I know Bama wants to sign two more receivers out of the Waddle, Copeland, and Ross combination. Don't you hate the phrase, "We'll have to let it play out?" Copeland has tweeted a few things in the last few days that were in support of the Tide. (IE: a column asking what would happen if UCF were to face Bama or UGA.) He was a Bama lean until Pruitt took off to the north. Now it looks like a three team race: Bama, UT, and UF.

Fisher had really gotten into Waddle's head about this "last stand" stuff. It's still going to be a Bama vs A&M battle but the NC game garnered renewed interest with Waddle.

A lot think Ross is headed to Clemson. His family wants him in Tuscaloosa. His visit is also scheduled this weekend. I think he'll end up in Crimson along with one of the other two.

Alabama offer a dream come true

Brock Purdy, three-star quarterback from Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, had a remarkable senior campaign with 4,405 yards passing with 57 touchdowns. Both are state records. He added 1,017 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
"My family and I are pumped to the max," Purdy said. "I have been in touch with them (Alabama) for a month or so. Coach Lupoi has kept in touch with me. When Coach Jeff Banks was hired he took over my recruiting area. Coach Saban and Coach Daboll (prior to departure to the Bills) watched my film.
"Coach Banks came by yesterday. He said they have been evaluating quarterbacks. They have been trying to find their guy. He said I am their No. 1 target right now. He wanted to get to know me a little more.
"Initially, they wanted Coach Saban to meet with me face-to-face to offer me. They were going to do it next weekend when I go for my official visit. Something happened with Coach Banks's flight, so he was stuck in Arizona yesterday. Coach Saban told him to go ahead and call me to tell me I have a full ride scholarship."
The offer from Alabama has definitely changed things in Purdy's recruitment.
"It's crazy," he said. "It's a dream come a true. I am very excited to have an opportunity to play at the highest level for the best team in the country. I've always wanted to play with the best.
"I know it's a great college town. Football is everything. I grew up loving football. I know they have limited numbers at quarterback. It's an opportunity where I can go in and redshirt. I can learn the system. It's a winning culture. I want to be a part of something that is remembered and special. It would be an honor to play for the best coach."
Purdy is also considering offers from Boise State, UCF and Iowa State. He has visited Boise State and will visit Iowa State this weekend. His family will travel with him to Tuscaloosa next weekend.

Who else is out there at LB if don't sign Walker and Peterson?
Really, no one on the "top of the board." The ones I've listed are considered the top targets for this class. There was some interest in Tuliaupupu but he's only left with one official visit which is scheduled for Oklahoma.

IF they are going to go after more linebackers, and keep the ones currently committed, it becomes a numbers crunch on another position.
QB 1
DL 2
OL 1
WR 2
CB 2

There's your eight. Where would you like to see the class lose a guy to make room for another linebacker?

Recruiting Q & A with Andrew Bone:

What are the chances for Bama to land Penei Sewell??

BONE: I definitely think Bama is in it. He's a different type of guy. He doesn't do many interviews. I knew he did a few at the Polynesian Bowl. I know he was decked out in Alabama gear one day. Marlon Humphrey wore FSU gloves every game during his senior season. I don't pay much attention to that. I know there are some in his corner who want him to go to Alabama. Alabama definitely believes it has a chance, but at the same time he has come across as wanting to stay closer to home. He is pretty torn about what to do. That's why he delayed signing until February.

Do u think we get surtain
How many players do u see us getting out of the following group:
Surtain, Petit-frere, waddle, taylor-stuart, sewell

BONE: I've been hearing a lot of positive things regarding Surtain lately. There are a few additional factors playing into it is all I can say right now. We'll just see how things play out. Things have definitely turned a little bit here.
It's possible Alabama gets all of those guys. Maybe none. I'd be surprised if none though. Alabama will be very happy if it can get 3-4 of those guys.

What’s the news on Waddle?! I want this kid he’s like lightning in a bottle

BONE: Nothing has changed. It's Bama or A&M. Alabama wants to sign two more WRs. Alabama has three elite targets- Waddle, Justyn Ross and Jacob Copeland. Alabama won't turn down any of those guys.

1- any chance with Tyler Friday tomorrow?
2- better chance with Sewell or Petit-Frere?
3- Do we hold on to Vernon Jackson?
4- The fact that Peterson is coming on his official visit gives us a chance to flip him or does he stick with Tennessee?
5- What if Waddle, Ross, and Copeland want to sign with Bama? Do we turn one down?
6- Is it possible to get Its and Surtain or we just get one or none IYO?

BONE: 1. Alabama is definitely in it a lot more than people think. It's Bama or Ohio State. It won't surprise me either way. Ohio State makes a little more sense based on how long they have recruited him as opposed to Alabama. Saban and company certainly gained a lot of ground in the last two months.

2. I have no idea with either one. Both have kept things pretty tight-lipped regarding a leader. Probably lean more to Petit-Frere bc of location, but Sewell's family is really high on Alabama.

3. I think so.

4. It's hard to flip him IMO. We'll see how things go this weekend though.

5. No. Alabama will take all three.

6. It's very possible.

Any additional linebackers being looked at?

BONE: I have not heard of any additional names yet.

  1. Without mentioning transfer names, do you see any possible kids transferring from Bama, that would impact recruiting this year (path to PT)
  2. Thoughts on Friday and could this be a DaShawn Hand type announcement or does OSU simply have too much momentum
  3. Purdy or Foster, not from a who's better.......but if both said they wanted, who would the coaching staff prefer
  4. What should we expect recruiting wise from Golding and the potential new DB coach, as they typically haven't been recruiting the 4-5 star type guys
  5. Do you see Langham committing this weekend, and who possibly else might

BONE: 1. I haven't head any names yet. Alabama will likely see who is available after NSD.

2. It won't surprise me either way as I mentioned above. There is some chatter regarding Alabama (coming out of the Northeast), but you never know.

3. Purdy has a committable offer.

4. It's hard to say...

5. It won't surprise me if he commits (publicly or privately). I'm not sure we will see any other commitments, but I expect Alabama will try to get Vernon Jackson to shut things down.

It seems to me we would be targeting another LB besides Peterson, but Ruggs apparently has no offer and no other names have surfaced. Could we see somebody pop up late, like Josh Jacobs did two years ago? Or do we just not want another LB, even if we lose Peterson and Walker? Thx.

BONE: Honestly, it's surprising to me that no other LB names have started to pop up yet. Maybe it changes next week after Alabama hosts Vernon Jackson and Quay Walker (?) this weekend. We will see if Walker shows up. I just have to think Alabama is going to tell Jackson he needs to shut things down or they will start recruiting other guys.

Will bama take 2 more offensive lineman? How many will be signed this cycle?

BONE: Alabama plans on taking one more- Nick Petit-Frere or Penei Sewell.

I know this is always asked but what 3 names do you feel best about prior to this weekend

BONE: Malik Langham, Brock Purdy, Jacob Copeland
