“The evil that is in the world almost always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence if they lack understanding.” —Albert Camus

if the men and women of this country didn't volunteer to serve their country in a military status, act in forward deployed shows of strength, and have the intestinal fortitude to defend this country no matter if they find their particular assignment just or not then we wouldn't be free and people wouldn't have the option to sit around opining publicly
Quoted above is a sublime recitation of our civic religion. Call it the Pentagon’s Creed. The inconvenient truth that demolishes this dogma, however, is that every metric that can be empirically measured indicates Americans were wealthier, healthier, and freer before you enlisted. The costs and corruption of our own government have been an exponentially greater burden than any foreign threat unassisted by our own government.

From a broader historical perspective, we have enjoyed arguably the most secure location in the world. Literally the two largest moats on the planet protect our eastern and western shores. To the north we’ve had friendly neighbors with a shared cultural and political ancestry. Behind them is one of the planet’s most formidable barriers, the Arctic. Likewise, to the south, we’ve had no threats militarily. The natural constriction of Southern Mexico and Central America predetermined that North America would never fear an invasion from the South.

So as fate would have it, rather than benefit from the peace and prosperity our geography and founding principles offered us, some very sick individuals, many of whom would enter Groton Prep School in MA and then be sent to the Ivy League, set us on a trajectory of becoming, in John Q. Adam’s prophetic term, “the Dictress of the World.” The truth is, it would have required remarkably little to defend the lives, liberties, and property of Americans had the purpose of our military been to defend the Constitution against enemies foreign and domestic. But that simply isn’t how the military has been utilized. Had it been, it would have overthrown Capitol Hill multiple times in history to “refresh the tree of liberty.” Rather than building a “city on a hill,” we built an Eye of Sauron.

Go Navy! Protecting our "moats" since 1775

As it should. The problem though is our Navy has been “protecting” the moats, among other things, of others, and calling it “a force for good,” “national interest,” “national security,” “global stability,” “international order,” etc. Evidently, world government isn’t so evil after all, so long as it’s our soldiers patrolling and dying and our defense contractors and banks receiving endless gravy from taxpayers. This is why the counties that surround D.C. are among the richest in the country.

Never said that it's perfect. Any time humans are involved it never is but defense has been necessary since there was more than 1 tribe of people on the planet. The US can't afford to have a small Navy while allowing China to have 1 ten times it's size or not have nukes when other countries do. I'm not sure what your ideal solution is but money, power, and greed have been around a long time, and they aren't going anywhere. Said before I don't agree with every war or everything the government/ military does but I do believe we have the best country on the planet and we owe a lot of that to those who have served to protect it and her interests.
