🏈 I'm bitching a bit...tired, tired of hearing the complaints/comments on our defense Saturday...

Everyone needs to chill about our D.

The secondary is young, but their biggest issue is focus. Saban keeps harping on maturity for a reason. This week our focus has been outstanding and this is a huge step for us.

The area the coaches are most disappointed with is our LB play, Saban has said as much publicly. That is why we are experimenting with JH and Nico. Our run defense is better with Nico at the Will and JH at Sam. LB play is why our run defense is not what Saban wants. As soon as someone else shows they can consistently play the Mike DH will play Jack/DE on all passing downs. This is something we will have to grow into, but our D will be improved greatly when this happens. Mental errors is why this is not currently happening with the exception of an occasional play or two.

As far as sacs go, we don't try to get them. We are trying to "affect" the QB and if a sac comes, fine. We want the QB to throw off balanced and hurried. We want TO's not sacs and TO's often requires he put it up and/or be running. TO's directly affect winning, sacs don't. What good is a ten yard sac on first down if the guy throws for 17 on the next play. However, if he throws a pic under duress then there is no next play. We want the ball in the air because the goal is to take it from them. This why Saban demands good ball skills from his DB's and why he coaches them himself.

Our D is a work in progress and they have improved each week. We have been planning for this game for two weeks.

A barner told me that the win over Duke last weekend wasn't that much different from the one in 2006 in Tuscaloosa. I was like "well, one was a 30-16 ugly win, the other was a 62-13 lop sided victory." They replied, it was how Duke handled our D line or some such. Yeah, Duke did score the first touchdown on us this season, but, I think the D was in a slightly different mode, as it was 42-6 at that point in the game. If the defense takes a slight drop off this season, worse comes to worse, our offense will carry the load.

Agreed.

One thing I find very encouraging this week is the approach the team has taken to this game evidenced even in the most mundane drills.

I agree with you Terry. Every video of practice I've seen this week you can tell the players have a little more energy and enthusiasm in every drill than usual. They're itching to show what they're made of this week and you can tell.

Yikes, he wasn't happy was he? He wasn't happy on the airplane to Duke either. Something's under his skin. I think it's the D that is driving him crazy. He knows what it could be and should be, yet it isn't there yet. Not only that but for the 2nd game in a row we were flying around in the backfield or around the line of scrimmage, but next thing you know the opposing RB is 5 yards or more down the field. There were several times over the past 2 weeks that we should have tackled a RB or QB for a loss, yet they skate through. That won't fly in the SEC and must be corrected. I think things like make Saban absolutely fume.

Saban seething. What a force for motivation.
