🏈 I figure this will be entertaining--fire away

I gather I'm generally thought of as a relatively level-headed AU fan. What questions or topics do you want to hear comments on?

Yes--this season is a complete, complete train wreck.

PS: I'm glad I don't have to add the prefix when posting from my phone!

Hope you are doing well aside from your season?

So, where do you guys go from here? Was it worth selling your soul to the Newton? (j/k!) Honestly Duder, I thought AU had its worst days behind it when it fired Doug Barfield but I guess I was wrong! How long is the Chiz goodwill, going to last?

Can't complain other than the atrocities I force myself to endure on Saturdays. Our one win was far from satisfying...

Newton- 100% yes

Chizik's goodwill expired in my mind about 28 points into the LSU game last season. Very, very good man. Great DC. That's all I got. Players aren't being developed. A lot of the assistants aren't carrying their weight and ultimately that is Gene's job to address. 5 games into the season our HC should not be saying we need a damn offensive identity. Either Loeffler sucks (jury is still out) or Chizik is cutting his legs, which he did with Gus.

All that said, he likely gets one more season. He at least lasts through signing day. The recruiting class is too strong for wholesale changes and a bulk of it will hold together if most of the staff stays in place.

As for people I'd like to see umm...changed: Grimes, Thigpen, Trooper and possibly Pelton.

Grimes was very good with a line 4 seniors. Thigpen has been underwhelming outside of recruiting. Same with Troop. He did a great job with DA, T-Zac and Kodi. That's it. Emory Blake is a gifted player. He'd be good anywhere. We're week across the board outside of Blake.

There is NO excuse for the DL play. None. There is too much talent for them to still look like freshman.

BVG has done well in my opinion. The D is improving. The jury is out on Loeffler. I think he can work. With our OL and QB play this year Bill Walsh would look like a crap coach. I don't actually put a lot of the offense on him.

I can't help but hesitate when I make quips about the season down there this year. That hesitation is all due to you being a good sport and member here.

Totally agree, Terry. I appreciate somebody who pulls for a rival but can be civil about it.

Believe it or not, I feel for the players. They're young men who had the courage to do something that most people don't have the ability to do---play sports in front of thousands of people, and on tv in front of millions of people. It's easy to criticize them from the comfort of your own home, but I'm sure they're doing the best they can do. Just like when Bama's guys went 3-8 in 2000 after starting out ranked #3.

Auburn can run their program like they want to, but I think there are several people who need to be barred from having any influence over the program. Even if Chizik lasts long term, there are still some guys who have a lot of influence over that program that need to be cut loose. In my opinion.

I enjoy you hanging around Duder. One of the few Auburn fans I like.

My question to you is.....

What do you do to keep yourself busy while your team is playing each weekend? :icon_lol: Just messin man

I appreciate the sentiment. But, we suck.

If we fire anyone the first name on my list would be Jay Jacobs. Football is crap, baseball has totally fallen, basketball has actually gotten worse. Hell, even swimming and diving has gotten worse.

The second name isn't actually firing someone but I want Pat Dye out. He did wonderful things for our program. He also destroyed it on his way out the door. He doesn't have the influence that many think, but he shouldn't have any. He doesn't deserve an office down there any more than I do.

Dye was, and perhaps remains, Lowder's henchman in and around the department. I don't know what residual, behind the scenes power remains with Lowder, but I have to believe he remains influential to some degree. Beyond bourbon and football, my experience with Dye is that he is stupid. Further, almost every aspect of Lowder's life (personal, professional and role as trustee) usually involved some machiavellian component, with tragic results.

RTR,

Tim

Duder, he's one of the guys I was talking about---people who influence the program that need to be shown the door.

i agree with some of the other firings that have been suggested, but to me the most glaring need for replacement at Auburn is anyone that has taken part in the recruiting debacle. i'm not sure what the statistical odds are of a team winning the national championship and having a glorious year in the SEC and then immediately after that doesn't have an adequate QB or a big, nasty RB.

these are staples of SEC football play. i'm not even saying they have to be great but they do have to be good.

in my mind i compare it to some of the players we had come through during the sanction Man-tits-ione and Shula era where we weren't even allowed to compete and things were artificially forced to be bad. we STILL had a lot of good players.

AU needs help in the recruiting arena. they have been known in the past as a place for running backs and that needs to return. there is no excuse for Auburn not having about 2-3 big, fast RBs. one of these guys can make your o-line play appear much better than it is also.

Duder, I won't take any jabs at you because you ARE a level headed guy. You haven't talked smack so I can sympathize with fans like you. Some of your cohorts though, karma is a bitch. I agree with some of the firings and cutting ties that have been suggested. I used to respect Pat Dye because he was a Bryant disciple, but he should've been asked to walk away and not return after his final game on the sideline. I think some of the powers that be have allowed for Dye to become that "favorite uncle" that can act like an idiot and say whatever he feels and get a free pass. Whether he has any say or not as far as having any power, some of his comments are hurting the program down there. I know Jay Jacobs played for him and is loyal to Dye, but Jacobs needs to crank up Pat's tractor and get him headed back to his farm, change the locks on the office, pass out pictures of Dye with the caption, To Be Shot on Sight!
Recruiting is suffering because there seems to be a mixed vision as to the type of kid they want to recruit. You seem to have a couple of guys on staff that want to bring in talented "characters" while the HC wants talent with "good character". The HC seems to be losing that battle with the high number of casualties (all of the off field issues) that have fallen by the wayside since the 2010 season.

Here's a question I've been curious about.

How much exposure did you have to Trooper Taylor when he was roaming the sidelines in Knoxville?

Literally my only memory of him at UT is "the guy that wore his hat backwards."

I was far too young to follow, or care, about anything but watching TE games back then.

The RB issue is partially Malzahn. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have Dyer on board, either. The monumental whiff on TJ Yeldon, taking a chance on Blakely, etc. It could, and should, be a very different story. But, yes--we need a back. Jovon Robinson would've had a ton of PT at this point.

That said, not sure an RB makes an OL of two freshmen and two sophomores any better. Patrick Miller had his ass handed to him repeatedly against...Arkansas. The returning folk still suck at technique, footwork, etc.

I strongly suspect if you knew of those days you'd have been railing against him being hired in Auburn.

What you are seeing now with discipline problems, attrition, etc. is the very same thing that happened at UT when he was there.

It really hit me last year when Auburn was the "winner" of the Fulmer Cup. The cups first year was a direct result of him being on that staff.

I saw someone mention how a lot of Bama fans talk about Auburn as being "East Georgia" when they should be saying "Tennessee South."

One of the glaring questions I have about Auburn is this. I know it's a brand new offensive scheme, but I don't quite understand why they bring in the true Frosh QB for the wildcat plays when Frazier was the wildcat guy last year?
