How many National Championships does Bama really have?

I've been wondering how many we really, officially, have. I always hear 13. But lately I have heard some people claim we have less than that. Anyone want to go over each championship and state why it was a NT or why it wasn't, etc? Also, I've wondered how many NTs we've lost, if any. I feel bad that I don't know this but nobody knows everything! ;)

There are 8 recognized per ESPN after the BCS game two years ago (counting the "major" polls). There is quite a Wikipedia article on it. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_Crimson_Tide_football

The "other titles" are simply titles the school claims from polls other than the major ones. They aren't entirely made up; there were polls, retroactive and otherwise, that awarded Bama titles that the school claims. The school officially began recognizing the other titles sometime in the 80s. I have one of my dad's old football programs from the 80s that only shows six. I can dig it out and upload a picture if anyone wants to see it.

All depends on what you choose to recognize. If memory serves, there are a few that the NCAA recognizes that the school does not claim.

ESPN may claim that, but the number on the Bama prop helmet that they have on every set in the studio mysteriously changed from 12 to 13 a couple of years ago.

Somebody in Bristol needs to place an order for some 4's.

I noticed that too. I wish they'd pick a side of the fence and hang out there. Saying 8 but having the 13 helmet has always irritated me.

It also irritates me that the AU on their Auburn helmet is too small and in the wrong damn place.

Either way it goes Bama either has more than everyone else or they're tied with Notre Dame. Regardless which number you choose, a response to a rival can always be "it's still more than you". Who cares? I doubt too many AU fans would argue as hard if we threw up a banner for the other polls that awarded us titles. The NCAA doesn't handle it so it is up to the school. This argument lost my interest years ago, it is just interesting to hear the opinions.

According to the CFB Data Warehouse we have been awarded 26. Which, if I'm not mistaken, makes us the most humble & gracious of teams only claiming half & all.

Wait, were some people trying to pretend that we claim MNCs we didn't win? LoL

Evidently, ESPN only counts the 6 titles Coach Bryant won plus 1992 and 2009. There were titles award by the major polls before that. The Associated Press poll came into existence on a permanent basis in 1936. Before that, there were other criteria that were used.

Depending on who is speaking, some say 8, some say 13. ESPN can't make up their mind. Shocking, I know.

Every fan base is going to try and find a way to discredit it but regardless, 8 is still tied with Notre Dame so what is it accomplishing? Regardless, no one really gains anything by arguing the 8 v. 13 issue as it's still the most.

yeah, and I don't see ND getting any more any time soon

... well the NCAA recognizes 18 National Titles for Alabama...

Actually, that is false. The NCAA does not officially award a National Champion for former Div-1A (now FBS), and never has. The bowls were considered extra games and the "National Championships" were awarded by the media- not the NCAA. Therefore they do not recognize them in their record book.

Technically no FBS school has any National Championships according to the NCAA.

Well, ND claims 13 so....

Personally, I say claim all 26. Except for 1941. That one's just ridiculous. Trade it for '66.
