🧑‍🤝‍🧑 / 🏡 How do you pay your bills? Electricity, and such.

So that's fucked up. I paid $60 for my recycle bin. I can drive three miles and he dumps it on the street. Makes no sense. But, I live in Charleson. Nothing makes sense here.

Ya wanna talk about prop tax for a minute?
That's one reason your garbage is "free".

The recycling business has gone from a profit center for municipalities to an expense. China used to take much of it, particularly paper/cardboard, and then they abruptly stopped taking it several years ago. That put the squeeze on brokers and municipalities. Vast quantities of recycle quality board went to landfills, and then a good number ceased operations, filed bankruptcy and/or sold at liquidation prices....many to the (pick your expletive) Chinese. Once they had this side of the operation, they control what they'll pay.

For the stuff that does make it overseas, the U.S. is polluting the world. Remember all the lawsuits and cleanups for battery recycling, such as Interstate Lead in Leeds? Much of that is overseas, in Africa, and the environmental havoc being wrought there is terrible. Then it's returned, mixed with other sources and the battery companies here can plausibly deny. Same with plastic, electronic components, etc. We've pushed our recycling, in a number of ways, into jurisdictions that look - environmentally - like the U.S. in the late 19th century through the fifties.

Yet we are running headlong into water and energy disasters with the consumption that will occur from these data centers. Producing nothing, just depleting our resources and jamming our costs in rural areas, all so someone can conjure a fricking singing teddy bear video.

At times, I so want a half or full section, ringed with hills where I have my own drainage basin, and just let me go be.

@It Takes Eleven You know, it doesn't take a lot for me to say, "WTF? Why?"

Walmart is on my shit list. I didn't mind the move to plastic bags: efficient for a lot of uses. IE: I was painting the other day and took a break with one brush and wrapped in a Walmart bag; was still fine that evening. Great little trash bags for picking up dog shit in the back yard: works great with the scooper.

But those idiots have now decided they need to go back to killing more trees, I guess? I abhor, hate, ____ their move back to paper. I don't know a use other than starting a fire...I've got enough in two orders to last a year.

Moral of that story? I decided to Google "what do I do with ..." A Reddit post, of all things, said, "the Food Bank always wants them." Damn. There's a "old" church about a mile from here that has their Food Bank open at least two times a week. I've seen them handing food out while biking. A LOT of food...so, Walmart bags may be worth something, to someone.

Reminds me a law they threw on us a few years ago that I missed. If you are putting lumber and branches at the street they have to be seperated.

I peeked over the fence one day when they were picking trash up and the guy stopped the pickup with his shovel thing on the damn trash pile. He put it down, and then told me I had to separate them if I wanted them picked up...after watching him start to pick the whole lot up. It all goes to the same landfill; no separation at that point.

Clippings and small limbs? Gotta be in a paper bag...limbs, cut to six feet or shorter. I bag the back to keep as much trash out from the pump basin as possible. It's a pain in the ass!!!

And...I need to get out and cut the back yard today, or tomorrow. Or pay someone.

There's my rant for this morning, week,...whatever.

Speaking of municipalities...

Chas. Water went to a company to handle their AR/billing. I didn't know it until I was ready to pay.

Now. Normally I send $300 every quarter. I'm normally in the black when I send in more. When they did this I just paid the month to see how messed up it might be.

Expected, but didn't like that I had to re-register which meant opening another tab to get all that account info, etc. All that BS I'm sure you understand...text this, this number. Geez. To top it off...1.58 processing no matter what I use. Unless, I send a paper check to the water company. I haven't written a check...geez. I don't know. The last one was the termite guy...

Still ticks me off even though I'll pay the same $300 in a few days for the next quarter. I know the bank would send a check. I've been too lazy to look to see what, or if, it costs anything.

In both GA and AL, we have separate locations at the same site for vegetative waste (limbs and cuttings) and construction debris. It's likely the limbs get mulched. Mulchers (and end consumers) don't care for nails.

They're still using plastic at Walmart and Publix here. Much of it is virtue signaling. Plastic is less environmentally intensive to produce, slower/less likely to decompose/be recycled. REI has stopped providing bags of any type; luckily, the last time I purchased a number of items there was ahead of my Scotland backpacking trip, and I purchased a small daypack that became my shopping bag. If you want to make a difference, use reusable bags MANY times to offset their impact in production.

Here's a thought. The last two orders have been from Super Centers. I needed something I can't get at the smaller, just grocery, stores. I wonder if they are still plastic?

Interesting thing about that neighborhood market is they haven't been out of stock for any item ordered. Going on...several years now. Is it a coincidence it's the Walmart just outside the base? I don't think so.

If they are doing that here (and I have reason to believe they don't all the time) it's separated after the trucks dump.

I make my difference by NOT going into the store; in so many facets of life.

Think I'd just burn them.
The guy that lives behind me has a burn barrel. I get it; but can't say I like the smell.

It's a "hrrmm" thing when you put them in the recycle bin.

Just a thinkun' ...

I know of four oyster recyling drop offs before I can get to one for the county.

I was just talking about the limbs and lumber scraps. Having to sort and cut to length, may as well have a fire and sit outside with a drink. I burn a lot of cardboard but most everything else goes in the trash. Well when I'm in alabama I burn it.

I've been watching fire pit prices the last few months...took my old one out after the last storm. Thought of a few ways I might build something...it's one of those spring things next year. I want stone; not the metal type.

The no smoke ones are nice, I've seen a couple diy videos on how to do them in stone, probably the way I'd go if I were building one.

There's one of those pebble, gravel, sand, etc., places that has stones that are basketball sized and under. It would take some work there...but it would look good (using an iron ring.) The pre-made stone....4' or so across...tempting because of what can be done.

I think it was Casey @BamaFan334 I was talking to about this sometime back. It was a cast iron discussion and I mentioned a guy at the fair grounds that sells cast iron stew pots. I can make a rig for that, quick like. I'm fairly certain I can find a rack without it being "one sold as an accessory."

But man...the idea of a cast iron pot, with chili, over hickory...beans yes, but smoked sirloin, etc...yeah. That's coming.

I have a pot and a grate to cook on the ones at my folks. Simple tripod for the pot and an adjustable post for the grate. Their's is pavers, not what I would want. The smoke is the only thing I don't like about a fire pit, smokeless if I were building but wouldn't just buy a metal one either.
Also have a 10 gallon cast iron pot with the stand but it's a propane stand.

In the weird things in life...I can open the gate on the E or W side of the house and it creates a natural breezeway. You just have to sit on the right side of the pit when the wind is blowing. Nature kind of break, so to speak.

The last time I looked at the stone options at Home Depot it was over five bills to start.

Chili is my favorite. That was us discussing as ai bought my wife a whole package of Smithey. It's been great so far.
