If he's not touched he's still considered live.

Down by Contact:
A player making a catch is down by contact once a defender makes contact with them.
No Contact and the Ground:
If a player is not contacted by an opponent, they are not down, and they can get back up.

The ball isn't a part of the body; it's equipment. So that doesn't count as contact and it should remain "live." There's certainly contact other than the ball: so close together!

My "common sense" tells me punching the ball out when his knee is down isn't a fumble.

So if ball comes out while knee is down on ground and someone touch him and punch the ball at same time the. What?

I looked earlier this morning and wasn't able to find the answer. I'm pretty sure it was in the 2nd quarter. Play by play may be the only recourse.

I checked the stats, the Vikings had no turnovers by fumble, so the final ruling had to be down by contact.
