🏈 Heading into fall camp, here's one fans perspective on the QB debate.

First of all, I'm an unapologetic Jalen fan. I've liked him since he signed with us. And I have no problem with the way he's run the offense, in general. Despite the criticisms laid on his doorstep, he passes WELL ENOUGH for a zone read RPO offense and under normal circumstances, is going to win far, far more than he loses.

That said, I will admit that the situation is not normal. Alabama has not really had a guy back there that is first round draft potential from an arm talent standpoint in the Saban era... until now. Yes, I was one of the ones that cautioned about putting too much stock in Tua right away, because he made a lot of errors in practice and those errors made CNS cautious about throwing him to the wolves too soon. But Tua, even with the rookie errors, showed remarkable poise on the field, incredible vision and accuracy under duress and the ability to shake off adversity and play like a champ. He reads defenses as well as anyone . Better, he finds his matchups quickly and gets the ball out in a hurry. And with rare accuracy and touch, even on deep balls. He could end up the best passer we've ever had.

Ever. And no, that's not hyperbole.

So, what do I think this all means? In the end, as much as I like Jalen, you have to play your best at every position. As much as I like Jalen, Tua can do all the same things, and is a much, much better passer. I said after the title game that if Tua learned to protect the ball better, there was no reason to expect he could not beat out Jalen. And I expect he will, despite the fact Jalen's not going to lay down and quit. But even if Jalen improves as a passer, I think he's hit his ceiling on what he can do as a QB. Tua's just getting started. If we didn't have Tua, Jalen would be a shoo-in to start again. But he's facing the best talent he's ever matched up against, and I think it will too much in the end.

So, I suspect that after the fourth game, when both QBs have had a chance to play, it will be obvious the offense is so much more explosive and unpredictable when Tua's at the helm, and that Tua gives us more options. And at that point, because of the new rules, I wonder if Coach Saban gives Jalen the option to redshirt and transfer out if he graduates by December without losing a year of eligibility. I have felt for a while that Jalen would be prefect in TCU's system, and if he got there in spring, he could fight for the starting job.

So bottom line, yeah I like Jalen a lot. But while I'm not favoring one over the other, I do think Tua has the upper hand in this QB competition and will be shocked if he doesn't win the job. He's made the situation at QB extraordinary. And while Jalen can handle the normal, I don't think he can beat extraordinary.

I don't know the person who wrote this. So credit goes to someone, somewhere, for some rational thoughts.

I have to agree with this a lot, and very well written.

The way it is put here, it gives Coach Saban the upper hand in keeping both guys with the redshirt rule, allows him to test the hand he's been dealt, and then allow all parties to make a decision without being penalized.

I don't believe Nick will want to attempt to have his backup restricted to just 4 games in hopes of receiving a redshirt. You either all in are the backup minutes would need to go to Mack. The best and most talented teams we face have #2's shortcomings all figured out and scheme to stop what he does best. He can lead Bama to wins vs the rest...just not the best of the best.

Mac Jones will be a solid backup. I have liked his arm since we were recruiting him.

As was stated by @JoseyWalesTheOutlaw, The day coach Saban is working out an admirable exit strategy for the loser of the QB battle will be his last day coaching football. You are either in or out in Saban's world and I seriously doubt there is any more gray area than that in our head coach.

The exit strategy will be on Hurts and according to dad he already has one. Jalen has not felt the need to correct that proclamation at any time so I never forget it. If he's not the starting QB, Mac Jones will be the backup at Alabama. How Jalen manages to use the new redshirt rule doesn't matter.

Agreed and all points made.....
NS will look at
A,,,,a virtual no mistake QB...that is 28-2......but struggled against talented Ds even in wins.... and seems to fall into the same patterns when there is pressure
Remember though that NS likes "mistake free" football
B....an obvious talented QB...that will make mistakes ..less as-he gets more experience...but is capable of lighting it up big time...with talent all around to compliment him..
And if he spring game is any indication....Jones looks capable of handling the backup duties as @BamaFan334 pointed out.... should someone not be happy in their role....
NS has a treasure chest of riches....

Jalen is too good of a teammate to transfer before chasing another National Championship with his team... Even as the backup (although I've said over and over I expect him to get snaps every game). He will finish the year, hopefully with another ring, and play out a last season somewhere else.

I agree.

Here is my question -what does Jalen want to do in life? If he wants to play in the NFL, it is certainly my opinion, as a Jalen FAN, that it will not be the QB position. tOSU QBs better than Jalen (a bit better) had to switch positions to play in the NFL. What position would Jalen switch to, to make it in the NFL? He has strength, speed, class, leadership - all good qualities. Would he be a safety? Would he be an H-back?

He can transfer to other schools and be serviceable, but everyone will challenge him to throw, and without a stellar running game, or defense, to bail him out, many teams would regret starting him over an entire year.

I don't see his athleticism transferring to another position... At the NFL level. And that's not to say he's not a great athlete I just don't see any fit for him. He's illusive for a QB but not like a RB. Don't see that freakish quickness to get off the LOS like a WR. Don't see the size for the NFL TE / H back. Defensively he wouldn't be ready to catch up now.

But all that is besides the point because he's not changing positions. His pops already said as much. I don't blame him either... For all his shortcommings throwing the ball I still see his best chance at the league is at QB... Especially how that game is starting to adapt to the RPO stuff. JMO
