šŸˆ Glass houses, *uburn, and spuat

I ran across a conversation about the *ubies using the term "spuat" in smack talk about Bama and some of the comments got me thinking. For those that don't know, they use spuat to mean "scandal plagued University of Alabama in T-town." I have always thought using UAT was just, well, stupid. I know it is supposed to mean something degrading to the University because they get tired of people calling UA the University. Still, I see it as stupid.

You know the line those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, right? Well I started thinking about that and the last four years at *uburn and realized just how screwed up it is considering the last four years and........

Reuben Foster: NCAA investigators to meet with Auburn 5-star LB recruit

5-star LB Reuben Foster, surrounded by family, will meet with NCAA investigators on Monday (247sports.com)

Reuben Foster’s change of high schools and college commitment has led to a meeting with NCAA investigators on Monday afternoon, his mother confirmed to the AJC.
Foster, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall college football prospect, transferred from Troup High School to Alabama’s Auburn High School 40 miles away in mid-April.
Last month, the 5-star linebacker who is entering his senior season also announced his new college destination would be Auburn after being committed to rival Alabama for 12 months.
ā€œThey [the NCAA] are talking with Reuben and me,ā€ Anita Paige said. ā€œThey want to make sure there was nothing illegal done to get us down here, or anything like that. They want to make sure there wasn’t a college booster involved.
ā€œNo, there was not a booster involved or anybody from the college involved. There was nothing illegal.ā€
Foster has said the reason he left Troup was because his coach, Charles Flowers, was fired after last season. His mother reiterated that on Monday, while also adding, ā€œI picked Auburn High School for us because it’s a better school system for academics. Reuben only has one more year of high school, but it was my baby girl [Kayla, 12 years old] who I was more worried about. I want them to get a good education.ā€
Since Foster flipped from Alabama to Auburn on July 12, there has been a ton of backlash, according to Paige. ā€œYes, the Alabama people have said all kinds of awful things, saying he is a traitor, and that ā€˜You can go play with the pigs if you want.’ They told him you won’t be playing for any championships at Auburn the next four years … just a lot of mean stuff.ā€
Why did Foster switch to Auburn? When Foster went public with the decision, he only read a short statement and did not take any questions from reporters. Paige provided some insight:

One day after flipping from Alabama, Reuben Foster got a gigantic Auburn tattoo on his forearm. His mother said the commitment is so strong that the entire family intends to get Auburn tattoos

ā€œReuben said I won’t have to travel so far for his games since we live in Auburn now. Plus it had to do with those shootings at Auburn. Ladarious Phillips was his cousin who played football at Auburn and was one of those who got killed. That played a big role in Reuben’s decision. He wants to carry on Ladarious’ legacy at Auburn.ā€
One day after flipping to Auburn, Foster cemented the decision by getting a gigantic Auburn tattoo on his forearm. His mother said the commitment remains so strong that the entire family intends to get Auburn tattoos, also.

Over a year ago, and since then about every time we forget he exists he says it again.

Yes, and some no here.

About a year ago he said he knew who the bagman was and would break it IF someone was going to go public with what was going on. No one did and according to what Danny said he feared for reprisals against his business and therefore decided he wouldn't come forward.

A lot of people took part of that conversation—he break the news on who it was on Finebaum—and ran with it without taking the entire comment to heart.

About a month ago Danny said something for the second time and the date he gave was August. He's made several references to CR's which everyone is assuming means cash runners. From Danny's wife's side I know the family down in Mobile very well. I know Danny has been doing some things behind the scenes (out of the public eye) preparing for something.

From a personal point of view I wish Danny would keep his mouth shut until he says something meaningful and detailed. That said, for him to come out publicly the second time and say he's going to point fingers caught my attention. IF he doesn't this time, any credibility he has is S.H.O.T. It's a bold move on his part.

The timing of Danny's last statement is what I find the most interesting. People that have absolutely NO relation or contact with Danny have been saying things that coincide with Sheridan. The timing of the NCAA right now?

All that said, I have no clue if anything will come of this. I'm ready for football to start. It is interesting but not to the point of following it daily, much less weekly.

One thing is for certain. Teams in the SEC and their coaches have had experience with Trooper Taylor before. They know what he's about. It's sad, yet amusing as well, that a decade ago any Auburn fan you spoke to would say he's one of the dirtiest recruiters in the SE. But now? And, if you stop for a minute and look at what ao22 put up there you'll quickly admit.

It looks just like Tennessee did when Trooper was there; everything about it.

So Rueben says he is going to carry on his dead cousin's legacy at Auburn according to his mom? So that means he will be there at the Barn for 1 year and then transfer to Jacksonville State!!

Honestly, I don't normally pay much attention to people who come out and say that they have dirt on a University's athletic program, but this guy seems to have a little bit something more behind his words so I'm actually paying attention.

Also, when Terry starts to talk about it he's probably done a little bit of research on the subject and thinks there's more to it than just words.

We'll see...

Looking at this from a logical standpoint, he stuck his neck out the first time but had a safety net.

This time? He's REALLY sticking it out there.

That said, I know his wife rolls her eyes occasionally with some of the stuff he says about football and she's just a casual fan. Well, I say casual fan...her nephew has been on the team the last few years.

Sheridan's "proof" that he was telling the truth....a lie detector test showing he told the truth.

Anyone going to respond when he does this again next year?

Public perception is a funny thing. In same cases it can change, in others it doesn't. I think I speak from a unique position here because I know Danny's family pretty well. And, because of that, I can say he's a good guy.

By all appearances he's "shot his wad" this time as well. I gave him a pass the first time because—like I've mentioned in this thread—he had a "safety net" he could fall back on. This time with his statements that "he was going to prove he was telling the truth," a lot assumed he might mean he was going to name someone. He didn't. I'll admit I find his lie detector test and it's results comical. But, in his viewpoint the results of the test prove he was telling the truth.

So, let's look at this for a minute.

Those that discuss Danny and his proof are saying what? That he was lying the first time and he passed a lie detector test? No, I doubt that is the case. I suspect if we get down to the root of the matter people don't care for the results but wanted something more substantial—like Danny actually saying who it was that paid off Cam.

Now, we are back to public perceptions again. It's the nations perspective, sans a few, that Cam was shopped. We know that is the truth. It's also the public perception that someone associated with Auburn paid him. With that, we don't know it's the truth. But, it is the perception. It's ironic you mention how people will react next year if he does this again. If he doesn't, no one will be thinking about Danny. But, the one perception that'll still be there? Cam Newton was shopped and paid for.

As I've stated before I thought it was surprising that Danny chose to come out with this again. Because it was the second time, logic dictated he'd offer something substantial. It just so happens that lie detector tests and being regarded as proof aren't considered substantial in some eyes.

What are we left with?

Fans thinking Danny should have left thing alone this time. Those same fans think he shouldn't have been so definitive with his statements the last time. (Considering this was something that came from Mississippi State in the first place it would have served Danny best just to leave it alone. Right now, he's really the only thing that "links" an Alabama connection to this story and that's only because he graduated from UA.)

Fans believing Cam, or his father, were paid for his playing time at Auburn.

Lastly, in ten years people won't be talking about what Danny said on a radio show or on twitter unless he comes out with something more substantial. However, one public perception will be the same. People will look at 2010 and talk about Cam and payments.

Now, let me leave something for you to chew on a bit.

As long as Chizik and his staff continue to produce seven and eight win seasons more focus will be placed on that 2010 season. It will become more of an anomaly in the eyes of college football fans in years to come than it is now.

With that said Duder, I'm curious about something.

You've read the first post in this thread about all the things that have happened in the last four years. What does that say about the stability of the program and more importantly its direction?

I don't know the answer to this question but I'm forced to ask. If we step back 10 years the majority of the SEC who followed recruiting and coaching on teams other than their own knew what Trooper Taylor was during his time at Tennessee. Did you have an opinion of him then? If so, what was it and what made it change—IF it has changed?

Let me say this. I ask these questions and make these points out of genuine curiosity. I don't mean this to be a "bash Auburn" thread and I don't want it headed in that direction. You have impressed me as a type of guy that isn't going to be "it's the REC in your assessments" and I look forward to hearing what you're thinking.
