🏈 Fall Camp thread - 2018! --Updates from scrimmage #2

I read that.

"Alabama is two weeks away from its Sept. 1 opener against Louisville. Recent history has shown Saban waiting until the Crimson Tide take the field before naming a starter.
The question is will Saban stick to that formula or with all the circumstances involved force him to name a starter sooner than he'd like."

That passage makes no sense to me. What "circumstances" are going to force CNS to name a starter at QB before he wants? I don't believe boosters, media, fans or players can force his hand on the issue. JMO

"Select boosters" sounds a lot like REC.

"He can say the media created a quarterback “controversy,” which it didn’t..." Actually, the media did. The media has been running stories since January about Hurts or Tua transferring, how Hurts lost the job because of his performance against Auburn and the first half of the NCG. Nothing came out of the program that anybody was demoted or promoted.

-- Freshman inside linebacker Ale Kaho was in full pads for the first time since joining the team last Saturday.

-- Running back Najee Harris was not spotted. He continues to recover from a foot injury suffered last week.

-- Defensive lineman Stephon Wynn (ligament strain) continues to be sidelined.

-- There were no setbacks for outside linebacker Jamey Mosley and safety Daniel Wright. They were both seen for the second consecutive day after previously being out with shoulder injuries.

-- Patrick Surtain II was working at Star with the first-team in a nickel package while Shyheim Carter was at safety with the reserves in a similar alignment.

-- Mack Wilson was spotted adjusting his cleats at the start of practice, which was only notable because he missed time last season with a Jones fracture in his foot.

Thursday Insider Report (12th practice)

Thursday Insider Report (12th practice) | BamaInsider.com

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama participated in its 12th of a total 20 preseason practices Thursday as the team prepared for its final scrimmage Saturday. Players were dressed in full pads in sunny, 92-degree weather for the workout. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— Najee Harris (lower leg) missed his fourth straight practice after reportedly injuring himself in last weekend’s scrimmage. He was seen in the weight room wearing a black, no-contact jersey.

— Alabama head coach Nick Saban did not address Harris during his post-scrimmage news conference Saturday but is scheduled to speak again tonight. BamaInsider.com will have an update on Harris following Saban’s news conference at 5 p.m. CT.

— Alabama saw some shakeup in its secondary as the team practiced out of the nickel formation. Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith were the two outside cornerbacks, while freshman Patrick Surtain served at the Star position on the first unit. Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney were the two safeties, while Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses served as the two linebackers.

— The second unit consisted of Nigel Knott and Jalyn Armour-Davis at cornerback and Jared Mayden at Star. Shyheim Carter was shadowed by Kyriq McDonald at one safety position, while Daniel Wright was shadowed by Keaton Anderson at the other. Joshua McMillon and Markail Benton were the two linebackers.

— Thursday was freshman linebacker Ale Kaho’s first practice in pads. He was a full participant with the rest of the inside linebackers. He practiced near the end of the unit alongside fellow freshman Jaylen Moody during drills.

— Mack Wilson was seen with trainers tending to his cleats. It’s unclear what was wrong, but he eventually changed out his footwear and was moving around fine during nickel drills.

— Isaiah Buggs, who showed his leadership during a clip in ESPN's "Training Days: Rolling with the Tide,” led Alabama’s defensive line unit during drills. He was followed by Raekwon Davis, Quinnen Williams, Johnny Dwight, LaBryan Ray, Phidarian Mathis and Tevita Musika. Stephon Wynn (ligament strain) was not seen at practice.

— Jedrick Wills continued to practice at right tackle, while Alex Leatherwood played right guard next to Ross Pierschbacher.

— Damien Harris led the running backs, followed by Brian Robinson, Ronnie Clark, Jerome Ford and Josh Jacobs. Ford most likely won’t feature much this season but looks impressive during drills.

- Najee Harris zoomed through the halls of the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility on a push scooter Wednesday, letting out a loud “vrooom” while passing a room full of reporters. The sophomore running back has been absent during practice this week after suffering an injury during Alabama’s first scrimmage this past Saturday. Fortunately for the Crimson Tide, the setback isn’t thought to be major.

“Najee Harris has a cast on his foot because he had a minor foot injury that our medical staff here felt like probably staying off of it for a week would be really helpful,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said during his Thursday news conference. “When he comes out of that we’ll start rehabbing him, he’ll be day-to-day. This is not a long-term issue that we think is going to be a significant problem for him even to be ready for the first game."

Friday Insider Report (13th practice)

Friday Insider Report (13th practice) | BamaInsider.com

Alabama players worked outside Friday for their final tune-up before Saturday’s scrimmage inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Players were dressed in shorts and shells for under cloudy, 84-degree weather for their 13th of 20 preseason practices. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— As expected, Matt Womack was not at present after breaking a bone in his foot during Thursday’s practice. The redshirt junior broke the same foot in March, keeping him out for the entirety of Alabama’s spring camp.

— Alabama’s offensive line split into groups of three. Jedrick Wills continued to work at tackle with Alex Leatherwood at guard next to Chris Owens. The left side of the line featured Jonah Williams, Lester Cotton and Ross Pierschbacher from left to right.

— Scott Lashley worked with the second group at left tackle while Deonte Brown played at left guard and Emil Ekiyor played at center. The right side of the line featured Tommy Brown at tackle, Joshua Casher at guard and Richie Petitbon at center.

— The inside linebackers took part in coverage drills with Pete Golding firing in balls from 10 yards out. The unit struggled with the drill as most players failed to reel in the rocket passes. However, freshman Ale Kaho was able to secure all three balls that came hs way.

— Listed at 6-foot-1, 218 pounds on Alabama’s official roster, Kaho is noticeably the smallest linebacker in the unit. However, he is one of the most polished during coverage drills.

— Deionte Thompson led the safeties in coverage drills and was followed by Xavier McKinney, Keaton Anderson, Daniel Wright, Eddie Smith, Jared Mayden, Kyriq McDonald and Shyheim Carter. We saw Carter feature at safety earlier this week. Alabama head coach says he’s looking to experiment some during camp.

— Alabama’s secondary worked out of the nickel package as reporters were ushered out. Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith were the two outside corners while Carter played Star. Thompson and McKinney were the two safeties. Thursday, Patrick Surtain II was with the first-team unit at Star.

— During his Thursday news conference, Saban signaled out Diggs and McKinney as the two most consistent defensive backs.

"Everybody else has been a little up and down,” Saban said. “And to me, everybody else's positions is still, there's competition at all the rest of the positions.”

— There wasn’t much to see from the quarterback position as Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts tossed the ball back and forth to one another. The viewing period ended before the quarterbacks began throwing to receivers.

— Thursday, Saban said naming a starting quarterback would not be an easy decision.

“We have two guys who are great competitors, who are both really good players,” Saban said. “They both have good fall camps, so I don't expect it to be easy. I want them to continue to compete and work hard and do well. Our coaches are working hard to help each one of those guys to be the best player that they can be, and we're going to continue to do that. Like I said before, if both guys can contribute to our team, we'll certainly utilize it the best way we can.”

I actually like that Kaho is lighter than the other backers. The way our DL stuffs the run, I'm more concerned about their pass coverage ability. Plus he's bound to add 10-15 lbs by the end of the year.

Also - is Owens the backup center? Seems like the first guy off the bench if needed (especially with Womack's injury)
