Practice report: Alabama makes a change along O-line

Alabama was back on the practice field Friday afternoon for its 23rd practice of the fall and first day of USC install. The Crimson Tide players practiced outdoors and in shells on a mostly-sunny, 93-degree afternoon.

Here are several tidbits from the media viewing portion of Alabama's Friday practice session in Tuscaloosa:

- After 21 practices, there was a noticeable change along what appears to be the first-team offensive line. Bradley Bozeman lined up at center, while Ross Pierschbacher moved over to right guard. Cam Robinson was at left tackle, Lester Cotton was at left guard and Jonah Williams was at right tackle -- just like we have seen the last 21 practice sessions.

- The second-team offensive line was comprised of, from left to right, Matt Womack, Dallas Warmack, JC Hassenauer, Alphonse Taylor and Korren Kirven. Nick Saban said Taylor would be day-to-day with an injury.

- Inside linebacker Rashaan Evans did not appear to be doing much in one period of individual drills.

- I did not spot inside linebacker Joshua McMillon during the one media viewing period Friday.

- A few scout-team numbers dotted the practice field Friday afternoon. They were linebacker Mekhi Brown wearing No. 45 (DE Porter Gustin), defensive lineman Johnny Dwight wearing No. 44 (DT Malik Dorton) and running back Lawrence Erekosima wearing No. 22 (RB Justin Davis).

- Several walk-on wide receivers and defensive backs also wore Nos. 1, 2 and 9, representing USC playmakers Darreus Rogers, Adoree Jackson and Juju Smith-Schuster, respectively.

*** What’s next: Alabama will return to practice Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT for its final practice before game week.

I'm thinking they're just getting Bozeman ready to play center if Ross P gets hurt. No way they would have gone this far to change it the week before kickoff. Either way, not a good sign for JC Hassenhauer, who I thought would for sure be our center for a few seasons. Just no big enough?

Practice Report, August 26, Ben Jones:

We only got to see one period of practice today instead of the usual two, so I didn't get to check around to every position group in the time we had. Here's the notes as Alabama started preparing for USC in shells.

  • The quarterbacks were in the same order today.

  • Raekwon Davis was going through some defensive line drills with O.J. Smith and Joshua Frazier. That's kind of an interesting spot, to me. You can bet that Smith and Frazier will play this year, so even though Davis' situation hasn't been resolved, it still looks like the staff is expecting him to play this season.

  • A couple of WRs were wearing yellow jerseys Nos. 7 & 9. That's Steven Mitchell Jr. and Juju Smith-Schuster from USC.

  • Christian Miller and Anfernee Jennings were working together as the 2nd team OLBs.

  • Jamey Mosley and Terrell Hall were working as the 3rd team. It looked like this would be the case all preseason, but I'd say they intend to play Hall.

That would true enough be kinda scary if Pierschbacher hadn't stayed on the field at right guard. Our linemen will cross train for every conceivable situation that Saban can think of.

While everyone is talking about Bozeman getting reps with the 1's at C, I haven't seen many, if any, mention Matt Womack had the majority of the snaps at RT Thursday. It's a pretty safe bet Womack isn't taking over Jonah's role at RT.

Along with that Shank has been out a few days due to a minor injury ... it's about back-ups and reps.

Alabama practice report: A different look in second day of USC prep

Day 2 of USC preparation sent Alabama indoors for a Saturday practice on a sunny afternoon.

The team was in full pads for what would appear to be the heaviest day of installation. Here's a taste of what we saw:

-- There was a different look to the first-team offensive line. Bradley Bozeman was the center with Ross Pierschbacher at right guard. So, they essentially traded the positions they'd had all preseason. Not sure how permanent this is, but the time for experimentation is typically over by game-prep time.

-- Alphonse Taylor, the starting right guard last season, was in a white jersey, but didn't have the knee braces and leg pads the rest of the line wore. Nick Saban on Thursday said he was banged up.

-- There were scout team jerseys scattered all over the place. Running back Lawrence Erekosima wore the No. 22 of Justin Davis, the second leading rusher from last season.

-- The four scholarship quarterbacks worked with receivers during the media viewing. Two walk-ons handled the QB duties in drills with the offensive line and defensive backs.

-- Running back Ronnie Clark was in a white, full-contact jersey after starting the preseason in black following an ankle injury.

How Alabama players deal with depth chart 'judgment day'

Game week starts Monday as Alabama begins preparation for USC.

-- Freshman linebacker Mack Wilson was working with the second-team nickel defense alongside Keith Holcombe. Reuben Foster and Shaun Dion Hamilton remain the first-teamers.

-- Freshman cornerback Nigel Knott was shadowing Tony Brown after missing practice time in August with an injury.
