🏈 Fall Camp reports/articles/links

Did you have a chance to see the Game Day Featured special here in the last week or so? A good bit of the story with Adam we all knew, but it does serve to put the bits and pieces we've heard over the years all together in one story.

There's something about the connotation of the word "headcase," ya know? I'm tellin' ya though ... kids' hoed a really tough row in life.

I did and I agree. My point about being a 'headcase' was not meant as an insult or derogatory but to point out that right now I believe Griffith is his own worst enemy. His struggles have placed him squarely in a position where I think he may not know from one kick to the next what's going to happen (including EP's). For a guy competing at a position that can be argued is feast or famine having a thin skin, as is hinted at here, only compounds any confidence issues there are. And let's be honest, good kid or not, we'd all rather have a more consistent kicker when it comes to winning football games.

#Alabama QB Bateman is trending down this fall, Barnett is improving and Hurts has won the coaches and team at this point. Only real decision 4 UA coaches is what is best way to develop Hurts? unless there's a sig change, he will be the QB by mid-season

Monday afternoon notes: Tidesports.com

The team had yesterday off and is watching film of Saturday's scrimmage today, so there's no practice, so there's no practice notes this afternoon. Wanted to let you guys know so you're not caught unaware. But here is what's happening in the film room:

No separation from the QB's during film session. All three were inconsistent. Hurts shows command of the clicker at times, but has a tendency to get excited and try to fast forward too much. Bateman has the most experience with the clicker, but he is not displaying his experience in critical moments. Barnett shined at the beginning of the film session by demonstrating his knowledge of the on/off button, but fumbled the clicker multiple times during the session.

I actually laughed out loud.

August 23 Practice Notes: Ben Jones

It's another hot day in Tuscaloosa today as Alabama returned to the practice field following 2 days off. The team was in shells today.
  • No change in the order of quarterbacks today. Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnettwere with one group, David Cornwell and Jalen Hurts were with the other one.

  • Looked like the players who sat out Saturday's scrimmage were all back. Dalvin Tomlinson was participating for the first time since the first scrimmage. Keith Holcombe returned to action.Seems they're in good shape on the injury front at the morning.

  • Minkah Fitzpatrick had what looked like a heavy wrap on his wrist last week, but wasn't there this week.

  • Anthony Averett was the second CB in the nickel package when I checked over there. They've changed that day by day and rep by rep but he was the only one I saw out there this afternoon.

  • Raekwon Davis was getting a lot of attention from Karl Dunbar. They were working almost one-on-one and while it looked like Davis still had a lot to learn even in terms of mechanics and fundamentals, but was really explosive and powerful once he came off the ball.

  • We asked Ryan Anderson earlier today if they were starting on game planning for USC, and he said he wasn't sure. Would assume we'll hear from Nick Saban about that tomorrow when he speaks. I'd also expect him to get some questions about the quarterbacks.

  • The Rams and Saints had scouts at practice today.

Practice report: Updates from Tide's 20th practice

Alabama was back on the practice field Tuesday afternoon following a two day hiatus and its final of two fall scrimmages. The Crimson Tide practiced outdoors and in shells on a cloudy, 90-degree afternoon.

Here are several tidbits from the media viewing portion of Alabama's Tuesday practice session in Tuscaloosa:

- Players that were held out of Saturday’s scrimmage -- Dalvin Tomlinson (ankle), Cam Sims (knee) and Keith Holcombe (ankle) -- were all back on the practice field. Tomlinson returned to practice after a week on a stationary bike in a walking boot. Holcombe participated in individual drills but he stood off to the side during nickel drills. Sims also appeared limited.

- Senior tight end O.J. Howard, who also appeared limited ahead of Saturday’s scrimmage, was back on the field and was doing, at least, a little bit more than he did three days ago inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

- The only players wearing black, no-contact jersey were Ronnie Clark, Richie Petitbon and Nigel Knott.

- The quarterback line was unchanged Tuesday with Cooper Bateman leading the group after the second and final scrimmage, followed by Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts. When the signal callers broke up into two lines, Bateman and David Cornwell (foot) led one, with Barnett and Hurts lined up behind them, respectively, as they threw to wide receivers.

- What appeared to be the first-team offensive line remained the same, too, with, from left to right, Cam Robinson, Lester Cotton, Ross Pierschbacher, Bradley Bozeman and Jonah Williams leading the position group.

- The nickel defense appeared to be the same with Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett at corner, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison at safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick at Star and Reuben Foster and Rashaan Evans at linebacker.

- Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar spent some extra reps coaching up freshman Raekwon Davis. The 6-foot-7 freshman and the rest of the defensive linemen working on shedding blocks and holding up blockers.

— The first five outside linebackers during drills were Ryan Anderson, Tim Williams, Christian Miller, Jamey Mosley and Anfernee Jennings.

— Wide receiver Cam Sims (knee) and inside linebacker Keith Holcombe (ankle) were dressed for practice, but weren't taking part in drills during the media viewing period.

— Defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson was practicing for the first time since suffering a twisted ankle during the Tide's scrimmage Aug. 13.

— Freshman defensive lineman Raekwon Davis was working with the scout-team defensive linemen. It wasn't immediately clear why.

— With Sims out, the order of wide receivers during drills was ArDarius Stewart, Calvin Ridley, Robert Foster, Gehrig Dieter, Raheem Falkins, Xavian Marks, Derek Kief and T.J. Simmons.

— The first-team defensive line during drills was Jonathan Allen, Da'Ron Payne and Tomlinson.

— The first-team nickel defense was the same it has been. It was Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett at cornerback, Minkah Fitzpatrick at nickel back, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison at safety and Reuben Foster and Rashaan Evans at linebacker.

— The secondary with the second-team nickel defense consisted of Tony Brown and Jared Mayden at cornerback, Shyheim Carter at nickel back and Hootie Jones and Deionte Thompson at safety. With Holcombe not participating, it looked like the two linebackers with the second-team nickel defense were Shaun Dion Hamilton and freshman Mack Wilson.

Feels like this could be a very special DB class. I was really high on Knott, maybe more so than the others, and I'm sure he is disappointed to not be in the mix considering how many freshman are in the 2 deep. However... For the greater good, a red shirt year would be a great thing for the program and possibly him. Breaking up this class some makes sense because only so many can play, and it's hard seeing guys use up a year playing sparingly. On the flip side, guys like Sheffield take it personally. Either way I think Knott is going to be awesome, just won't be this year.

Him being hampered with an injury didn't help. He needs a year to put on some weight and get healthy. He has some great skills and killer athletic ability, so I'm with you, excited to see him soon.

Yes sir... I was more so referring to the injury/black jersey in the reports. Just think he has an agressiveness you don't see at CB very often... Like Cyrus did.

Practice Report, August 24: Suttles.
The team worked inside today.

Nothing changed with the quarterbacks with Cooper Bateman leading the drills. Behind him was Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts. David Cornwell is still limping a little bit. He still has one of the best arms on the team.

The nickel defense featured Marlon Humphrey at one corner with Anthony Averrett at the other. Minkah Fitzpatrick was the Star and Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison were the safeties.

The offensive line remained unchanged in its order.

Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris led the running back drills. Derrick Gore and Ronnie Clark were next up followed by Joshua Jacobs and B.J. Emmons.

Directors of Athletics Bill Battle was spotted at practice. He looks in good spirits. Also spotted was Phil Savage, Alabama's radio color commentator.
