šŸˆ ex-Clemson QB Kelly Bryant's transfers to Missouri

What's best for the team can be viewed through numerous lenses...
Was it a fair to his teammates to leave them mid-season?

The more this plays out the more it looks black and white versus a murky gray. It's a situation where he could have done what's best for his team and teammates versus doing what he thinks is best for him.

Blackledge took some heat yesterday for calling the move selfish. It's an accurate descriptor.

Glad I don't have to deal with this, as a coach or a parent is all I can say. I see this from numerous perspectives, I don't know that there is an easy answer or a right/wrong answer.

@TerryP It may be black and white, but from who's perspective?

The fact that Goldilocks got hurt against a tough Syracuse makes this more of a topic. Had he played and they handled Syracuse like they should have, this wouldn't be a conversation this week.

I would bet my toe nail clippimgs collection that Dabo made a promise to TL that he would be the starter this year after he learned some of the offense. Just to get TL to sign with Clemson. Dabo should have followed his good friend CNS in the way that he let his QB situation play out, last year and this year. I don't believe CNS makes promises to recruits about playing time to get them to sign the dotted line. I believe Tua was probably a better all around QB than Jalen was when he first stepped on the field last year as a freshman. But he did not know the system or offense. So Jalen remained as starter and Tua learned throughout the year, playing spot duty untill the NCG when he showed what he was capable of in the second half. JMHO, but I think Dabo should have left his senior QB as starter and let TL have spot duty through the season just like Tua last season. I guess that if I were K Bryant, my feelings would have been hurt too.

@planomateo, It's a team sport, Matt. That's the one point there is no argument against and it's the one point I can't get past.

Ya know, over the summer I pointed out how Jalen was so involved with the team and the leadership role. It didn't make sense to me for him to put in that effort if he was intending to book. I'm sure the players took his actions to heart--they alluded to such.

Bryant was involved in team activities as well over this past off-season. Is it reasonable to assume they were counting on him to be a part of their journey this season? I believe so. And that belief fits with the theme "he quit on his team."

I've entertained that thought a few times. There's precedent with the way he's handled recruits (Nkemdiche and his crew.) Of course, that fell apart on him as well.

I wonder if Kelly was kicking himself in the ass after Lawrence went down?

Doubt it, play 2 games while he recovers from concussion and burn eligibility vs playing a full season somewhere else.

I wouldn't be so sure. The Lawrence kid could have some lingering issues and Bryant actually could get 3-4 games and play really well. Dabo would then have some serious questions to answer. Do I replace Bryant, because Lawrence shouldn't lose his job due to an injury. But then Bryant has played lights out. It's a moot point though. I was just thinki out loud.

May be that Dabo only promised starting to Nkemdiche whereas Ole Miss promised starting, run of the house and $.
Did you start to spell "Spice" and quit?

Clemson's region is a huge meth area...probably likes smokin' weed more than a speed high.
No Terry, I was not thinking of the smoke, he probably had his choice though, but a friend with weed is a friend indeed. $ - I was thinking more along the lines of Franklins, greenbacks, moolah.

@footballer, I know...punning around, so to speak.

It's ironic you bring that up with the discussion here about Ole Miss players transferring and how that's different, or no different, than Bryant.

I've a real hard time believing the players at Ole Miss were "mislead" by the coaching staff about what was coming from the NCAA. If the world knew it, they knew it as well. Hell, I have a really hard time believing they didn't know guys like Leo were getting extra benefits. You just can't hide that stuff from team mates--much less others in the student body.

I don't know if he was paid at attend Ole Miss. I never heard him mentioned by name when Freeze and company were on their roll. I do know his "appreciation" for ganja was well known.

I don't follow Ole Miss football, so I really can't speak to well to any of their players that left; however, if they finished out the year and then informed the coach of the transfer I would put it in the different category than leaving after game 4. Granted, you plan around a 3, 4 or 5 year plan with a player, but at least the coaches knew and could recruit/sign to the holes made at years end. Leaving game 4 really takes a scholarship away for that year. Think if you have 4 or 5 kids do it... that's a lot of scholarships that could have gone to others.

What happens when you have a Dineman/Olinemen/WR/DB/QB/RB/LB all leaving because their 3rd string? You could have a team short 5 to 10 scholarship players in a heart beat.

@94 Grad, I heard Tony Barnhart claiming this is a case of unintended consequences that no one considered before passing the new rule. A load of bullshit, I know. It was discussed across the board/'net as soon as it was introduced.

To your point--that's my contention as well as stated in this thread: a dramatic difference between what happened in Oxford and State College versus that of Clemson.

FWIW, I think the 3rd string kid that came in and led them to a win is a better fit long-term and certainly looks more durable than Gisele.

Salute to the new backup QB. One minute he was standing with his green vest on looking up in the stands trying to find his girlfriend and the next minute he is the Man and once he settled down he played pretty well. That 4th and 6 pass was well done. That play alone got him into Clemson lore.

Oh and Kelly Bryant quit!

When all things are equal, it's always been more prudent to stick with the experienced trigger puller. Nowadays it's more, let's go with the younger guy with the higher ceiling. That higher ceiling is tomorrow and this season is today. From what I saw vs Texas A&M and Syracuse it might even be the day after tomorrow for Lawrence. If so, that bewildered look you see on the head coach's face will be a whole lot of unintended consequences playing catching up.

Keep digging Dabo, China is down there somewhere.

JMO but had Dabo continued to start Bryant for two additional weeks and then pulled the trigger for the kid on the block then the media would have blasted him. Either way Dabo was going to face media criticism. Then again who gives a shet what those folks print. 95% of them never played a down.

Have you seen Clemson's schedule? Lawrence was getting something Tua never saw last year. Reps with the game in the balance. There were many games last season that Tua never sniffed the field. The overreaction was thinking a decision had to be made after the 4th game. Growth, composer, experience, takes time. After the 12th game, see what you have, then make the smart call for the push to the playoffs.

The difference between Kelly and Lawrence compared to Jalen and Tua last season would have been a lot tougher call for Bama as far as talent is concerned and yet Tua had to wait out the eventual decision. The next season you have no controversy cause Bryant ain't there. Lots of ways to play it, but this all or nothing approach that Dabo dealt himself defies football logic.

Again , I am going with Dabo gave Bryant a shot at getting another year of college football at another school or even at Clemson. The timing of the change leads us to that very reason.

I just don't see the quitter label on the way out. Jalen is likely gone after the season to get more playing time, AS A STARTER, and technically, he has to quit his job here and go where he can get reps. It's a general term that smacks like a branding iron.
