I played "two-square" a lot as a kid with my cousin...a "four square" layout at school and at the city park. I've seen kids play "four square" on tennis courts where the net wasn't up.
It's not such a stretch that someone thought, "we ought to put this in the air..."
Reminds me of a mix of 4-square and 9-square. My son plays 9-square a lot in PE. Has the grid in the air like that but 9 squares like a Tik Tack Toe board.
