Not necessarily. Going off the criteria of the CFP, we could still get in. Do we deserve it? No, we had our shot to go to the championship game and we shit the bed. But, I don't think it's debatable, we had the tougher schedule, and better wins(3 currently ranked). So that's why I say this. Happened last year when we got in, we'll see if it happens again.
Bama did beat the SEC champion if that helps,
And SMU still has zero top 25 wins. That wasn’t an ideal game for Bama’s hopes, but the emotion will wear off and the Committee will be looking pretty deep into a lot more than tonight’s results (which was still a loss for SMU). And Clemson isn’t Oregon. Again, not a great spot for Bama to be in, but I think absolutes saying one way or another right now are premature and off the mark.

Like I said before, I'm more uncertain now. But when comparing the two teams, I don't see how smu can get that spot over Bama. We've probably got THE best win in college football ATM, a win over a team that beat the ACC champions last week, and another top 25 win on top of that. Their sos and resume doesn't come anywhere close to ours. I wish we could've just took care of business so we didn't have to have these conversations.
I'll add this too... this notion that just getting to your conference championship game in the shitty ACC or Big12 should guarantee you a spot in the playoffs is ridiculous. First of all, if it should be a guarantee, then it should be written into the agreement, and it isn't. Second of all, when it is written into the agreement in the near future, the shitty ACC and Big12 will still be left out of the guarantee, and for good reason.
I said I wouldn't get bent if Bama got left out, and I won't. That loss to OU was BAD. But I think it's also important to be honest about some of this stuff, and this isn't Upwards Football were mere participation by a team that can't beat good teams, gets a pass. At least it shouldn't be. Bama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina all deserve it over SMU.
