Private school owned/operated by LDS. Guess that provides more leeway.

Changing the subject a bit here:

Ty, going back to BYU, is certainly part of the "alumni pull." But, it's also part of the LDS pull. A few weeks ago I recall reading one of their requirements for their new coach is he's a member of the LDS. That just seems ... well, weird. (Where's the outcry about religious discrimination?) It just strikes me as odd in today's age.

Going even more off topic: Paxton Lynch threw me for a bit of a loop when he tweeted about transferring to BC with the closing comment, "the Power 5 Jesuit school" or something akin to that.

Does BYU receive any federal funding? That could be how they skirt the religious discrimination.

@OldPlayer They do report their athletic spending to the DOE; public record.

I think all schools do. I'm not anything close to an expert on this, but it's similar to schools that are male/female only. If they aren't accepting federal money (or state money?), they aren't/don't need to follow federal guidelines. Since BYU is supported by LDS, the separation of church and state applies. I think.

Jay Tate is reporting their next target is Ted Roof. That Ted Roof.

Alright, so we know a few guys remain in play for the defensive coordinator position:

a.) Manny Diaz from Mississippi State, who was first contacted either last Sunday or Monday and who has exhibited more than token interest in the job.

b.) Todd Grantham from Louisville (and Georgia before that), who also has more than token interest in the job.

Now we can add Georgia Tech defensive coordinator TED ROOF to the fray. He was contacted early last week and has interest in the job, we're told by two people with knowledge of the situation. He served under Gene Chizik from 2009-2011 and was dismissed in the post-2011 scapegoat scramble. Roof landed on his feet at Penn State under Bill O'Brien and then moved back to his alma mater, Georgia Tech, for the 2013 season.

Roof's defenses at Tech have run the gamut: Very good in 2013, below average in 2014, maybe one click above average this fall.

Malzahn and Roof worked together for three seasons ('09, '10 and '11) ... and worked well together.

We're told Malzahn's initial impression was that Roof wasn't interested in leaving his alma mater, but either Roof's feelings changed or Malzahn misinterpreted things. Either way, Roof is a real possibility here at this stage.
