It's been a very long time, but I believe I paid for the 32 ounce. It was the 64 ounce, that if you finished along with what looked to be a three pound potato, they would give it to you.

Oakmon, off of Main St., behind the high school as I recall. Maybe it was a middle school? There were two there as I recall; one behind the other.

They were later shut down when the owner was accused of cattle rustling - that'll cut your COGS.

That reminds me of a girl I was seeing when I was in Tuscaloosa. She was bragging, well, not really, just commenting on how lucky she was to be receiving the bonuses she was getting as an assistant manager of the International Deli on The Strip ... only to find out the owner was dealing cocaine.

All this talk of steak got me thinking about a steak house chain in the Midwest in the 90s/early 00s called Ponderosa that had all-you-can-eat steak for like $15.

Was a decent sirloin cut, about 8oz. I could put down about 4-5 of those easily.

One of the better steaks I can remember was at a dive in my small hometown of Sulligent, AL called Country Squier. They carted a slab of prime beef to your table and cut your preference right in front of you, pointing the knife at an inch to start and stopped to cut when you said "when". I bussed tables there in high school and would go back to eat there periodically over the years. Last time there was about 12 years ago.

I do. Worked for both.

Obviously, a Mixon owned the Country Squier. And the Boyett I worked for owned 1 of 2 local pharmacies there. I wrapped gifts and delivered meds to shut-ins my senior year.

All this talk of steak makes me think of the infamous Ryan's Steakhouse story...I was in f'ing tears reading this the first time in the mid-late 90's. Sorry guys, I'm derailing this thread further...

We have no buffet style restaurant anymore.

We had a GC in the old Ryan's location (after Ryan's moved to Skyland/69) on 15th, but they closed down about 8 or so years ago. Then Ryan's goes belly-up last year.

Ryan's was decent. When they added steak that was cut and cooked right in front of you at the buffet, it wasn't bad at all. Not a fantastic steak, but again, AYCE.

Now we're stuck with nothing but single-platers with an average table wait of 30+ minutes.

Texas Roadhouse has a decent steak. That's about all I can think of. I hear Nicks in the Sticks steaks are pretty nice, but in all my years in Tuscaloosa, I've NEVER made it over there.
