🏈 Clowney "The Freak"

Well of course our D is best considering who's driving this thing. That's what is crazy when you think about what could of been. Not necessarily for us but I would have to imagine that Saban and Kirby could of molded Clowney to even more of a monster than Lorenzo Ward can do, no offense to Mr. Ward.

His name escapes me at the moment...but Michigan's left tackle did a good job against him in the bowl game as well. The famous hit by Clowney in that game came as result of a stunt where he should have been picked up by their center or guard.

Everyone discusses how good JC is in pass rush situations. How often do you see him being mentioned in conversations about defensive lineman and defending the run?

CFB mentioned some things about him that could improve. Play recognition was one of them. They showed him versus LSU and Mizzou, but I have no idea why no one brings up the first game against Vanderbilt. He does bite a lot on the read option and on reverses. Then when teams run in the I, they run right after him.

I was thinking about that as well. In the SEC Championship game, Alabama ran right at Jarvis Jones.

It would really suck to become one dimensional and have that freak coming after you the whole game.

In any case, I'd rank Jadeveon #1 in a heartbeat. I mean, name another standout star on the 11-2 Gamecocks that incites the same brand of fear, fever, anticipation, and respect..... or even made that attached list? The Gamecocks were 11-2 last season and Clowney was the only one that made that Top 25 SEC best list, while other 10-plus win teams, Bama, Gators, A&M, Tigers, Bulldogs all had 2, 3 or 4 on that list. Heck even lowly 5-7 Tennessee had one player. Jadeveon brings an element to the game that transcends ability, which he already has in spades. Every time the Gamecock defense moves on a play, everyone is eyes on Clowney with anticipation. Yes, there are great QBs, RBs and WRs in the SEC and the league, but few can command the undivided attention of viewers like Clowney... and he doesn't even handle the ball!!!

Best college football player in the SEC, don't agree. Maybe he'll be the top of the NFL draft, he certainly has a ton of upside. He's got the gift sure, no question about it, but statistically there are others that put up the same sack, tackles for loses, etc as him.

I'm not taking anything away from the guy, just seems like he's getting some extra mileage outta the Michigan game.

Seems some scouts have given him some feedback, stop taking plays off...when he does that, I'll be the first to push him into the list. Last I checked, SC didn't win 11 games because of Doo Doo...

IF you were to ask Patrick Hearn he'd say DJ Swearinger "incites the same brand of fear..."

Being Canadian, I don't know how familiar you are with players we've had in the past. You may get this analogy.

Back in the early 90's, specifically the '92 season, we had two standout ends in Copeland and Curry. If you took one of those guys off the lineup the other would still be a great football player but not nearly as dominate.

With UofSC, little credit is given to Devin Taylor. If it wasn't for his talent at the LDE position Clowney wouldn't have had near the success he had last year.

As mentioned earlier, if it wasn't for Kelcy Quarlest, the tackle against Michigan never would have happened.

You're spot on about the scouts and their opinion about Clowney right now. Adding to that there's the point that he isn't the best, or even near the top, at recognition of what an offense is doing.

Not disagreeing with any of the above. A team is built of players that help each other to succeed and be great in their respective positions. But even with that there are still two kinds of stand out players: ones who perform noticeably well, and ones who not only perform noticeably well but have an aura, a mystique, a sense of je ne sais quoi to add to and to bolster their image in the eyes of fans and pollsters. Clowney has it; others do not.

What trait, ability, or talent does Clowney bring to the field that can't be described or quickly categorized/named? He's a freak of an athlete. His image has been bolstered by a single highlight clip that's repeatedly been played.

While we didn't face Clowney last year we did face a few defensive lineman I consider to be just as good, if not better (based on their ability to compliment their team in run support.)

Sam Montgomery at LSU is one. Hell, Jarvis Jones ranks right with him as well. I can't recall the first name, but there's a kid that played on WKU's squad last season I believe has the same upside as Clowney: Smith? (first name is a lot like Julio's...I could look it up but don't want to :icon_twisted: )

Speaking of a Smith, the one Arkansas had last year—Chris Smith—is a hell of a talent but not utilized under that fiasco of a coaching staff last year.

Getting back on track with the subject at hand: specifically his ranking as the "Best football player in the SEC." One sack per game doesn't do that. When you don't even rank in the top 50 for tackles in the conference and not even in the top three or four on your own team?

IF he had, even once, took over a single ball game I'd probably be of a different mind set. He hasn't.

I told that to someone else today, too. Run right at him. He'll make a play here and there but not consistently.

Clowney may be playing not to get hurt, but damn! He's still gotta play the game. USCe as a whole looked overrated.
