🏀 Cecil Hurt not-so-subtly making the case for a MBB Coaching change

Alabama needs to decide what it wants to be in basketball. Do they want good with a chance to be great or great with a chance to be dominant. Alabama isn't known as a basketball school like Kentucky, Kansas, UNC or Duke are. As a result, it's difficult to get great players. I don't think CAJ is a bad coach, but he has average players. How far can we go with average players? Even if we had Coach K we wouldn't be much better.

IMO, CAJ gets another year.

The buyout was well within the market parameters when his contract was extended. In other words, a normal move by any AD at any school. I find it difficult seeing "stupid" assigned to an action when said action is market driven. Going below, or above, market value and we'd have a stupidity discussion. It was neither.
But stupid IS renewing after his first trip to the dance when weren't a solid bid anyway..

I agree with you and I think he gets one more year strictly due to the economics. He makes more money than Jay Wright at Villanova. So if he can't recruit better than average players or develop them then it's time for him to go before Pearl takes over the state.

Cecil ain't letting up...

There's a reason he included Avery's contract details with buyout in his article. He's gauging fan support for paying the buyout. Cecil sees the writing on the wall and knows what SHOULD be done. Again, he's not some Joe-Shmo beat writer. He's been at T-news for ~30 years, and KNOWS the athletic department inside and out. He has a ton of clout with boosters. His finger is on the pulse.

Pulling no punches on Twitter...

I respect Cecil for the world he lives in and writes about, but saying his 30 years at a small market newspaper makes him a force is laughable. Why hasn't he gone beyond Tuscaloosa in all those years? I hope that Byrne isn't using Cecil's input as rationale for a decision - either way.

Cecil has been covering Bama for ~40 years, perhaps he just loves Alabama. You could say it's in his blood ;).

Alabama has proved it's committed to paying for a basketball coach. Now they just need to find the coach that gets them into the NCAA tournament yearly, perhaps Avery is on the cusp.

Interesting to see what coaches are getting paid, to my point earlier. Bama is committed to paying top dollar...

Well I am eating Jim & Nick' baby backs along with baked beans and tater salad while I wash it all down with a Ultra. JMO but Cecil mentions we've been hung up in neutral for 13 years in BB but he's wanted a commitment from the U of A to go big or go home. I understand that Mark, Grant, and Avery might not be page one HC's but the problem might be as much the fact the program continues to depend on talent from the State of Alabama to get Bama to the Dance. The next guy has to branch out and expand the roster. Maybe a little more IQ and a little less athlete might be a good mix. What we're doing isn't working (not a complete loss) thus we change the coach.

Ten Bears...……...it's not the arrow...it's the Indian

This Tina Day Neen is basketball S&C coach Lou DeNeen’s wife.
I'm lost on how anyone who has followed Bama basketball could have made that mistake. Well, that said, there are a lot of opinions being tossed around by fans who say they follow basketball for the Tide.

But seriously, after the incident last year with Pearl and Lou this seems like a really hard one to miss.

My view is simple. If we were executing well but loosing because we did not have the talent then there would be hope based on improved recruiting. As it stands better athletes playing in an undisciplined fashion would not improve the program. Coach Johnson is an excellent pro coach but has proven he can not coach talented but undisciplined players.
