| NEWS Can 14 days of prohibition keep Alabama sports on track? l Hurt - Tuscaloosa News

Lost in all of this is the alarming rate of false positives that are initially reported as "new" cases, but then never corrected. In one example just last week/weekend in the NFL, 77 tests from 11 NFL teams came back ALL 77 positive. The subsequent tests the following day showed ALL negative as did the next follow up tests. Numerous other false positives have come to light through major league sports because there is mandatory re-testing. Makes you wonder how many other false positives are out there.

Always thought that was point.....
And if everyone wears....if you dont know if you have it....thaen it wont be spread by that person...????

Go and sneeze with your mask on and tell me if it blocks everything
I know very well the difference, working in the top hospital system in the area and having experts all around to consult on this. The virus does not just exist in the air - which is why virus size doesn't matter and why cloth and N95 masks work. It exists in droplets. Mask stop the spread of droplets, and thus slow the spread of the virus, which is the entire point.

So serious question.. no venom but how does the mask stop the spread of droplets? Have you sneezed with the mask on? I have and it seems like lots of stuff gets out when it blows off my face. Does the mask keep you from touching it on a counter? maybe it keeps you from scratching your mouth after you have touched something. Again, the mask is at best something to make you think before touching your mouth but you end up touching the mask after touching counters and doorknobs and then putting the mask over your mouth and nose.. so my question is.. how does that help?

To me.. it doesn't because it isn't airborn it spreads on surfaces, which gets virus on it from droplets and we get it from rubbing our eyes, our nose or mouth.

It doesn't stop, but it reduces transmission. If you sneeze without a mask, the droplets could easily go six feet. With a mask on, it may go 1-2 feet. if both of us are wearing a mask, the chance of transmission drops drastically. That's the purpose of the mask - to reduce the transmission, not stop it.

There has been mixed-messaging from the experts about surface transmission. First it does, then it doesn't. If it does, for how long?

As I understand it is all about being exposed to enough of the virus to infect you. If a mask reduces (does not eliminate) the amount of virus you are exposed to from a sneeze or other then it reduces your risk of being infected. You can be exposed but not get infected. All of this is why less time spent in and around people reduces your risk of being infected. If I talk to an infected person for 2 minutes it is unlikely I would get enough of the virus to become infected. The longer I am around them the more likely I would get infected. This is why it does not bother me at all to go to a grocery store. I am sure I have been around someone with the virus but I simply pass by and move on. Not enough exposure to be infected.

My 2 cents and I did stay in a holiday inn express last night:).

Kids are still going to get alcohol and gather together. Band-aid on a mortal wound. Watch for Bama to go all remote learning in the next couple of weeks. Governor Ivey has dropped the ball in the state all along IMO.

How a mask slows the spread of droplets is pretty remedial. I'm sure everyone can figure that out. Perfect? No. But the virus infects others through direct exposure and duration of exposure. It's not readily transmitted at all via surfaces. So stopping aerosol droplets is self evident, and not exposing oneself for long periods of time in close quarters to those unmasked are the easiest and most effective ways to prevent acquiring the virus, and it also allows people to still live their lives which we all want.

Do you really think Bell will do that? I'm losing faith in him by the day.
I am as well. Right now, it looks like nothing more than a money grab. Lock students and their parents into tuition and dorms, acquiring all they can, and then pull the plug and go virtual. My son is doing Shelton State online this fall. He is a little concerned about the Spring semester and taking Math, but I told him that none of this is a given to be over by January.

That's the problem. I'm coming of the opinion they are taking advantage of families and students.

That $250 in Bama Cash threw me for a loop this morning. #FakeMoney
Its college ...of course they are....
I remember being squeezed so hard.....
Us newly weds had to live on baloney sandwiches....and kool aid....( which actually was upgrade for me...hardly for ms50+)
Still take advantage....look at season tickets.... at ticket prices...
Tuition....better take more than midevil dancing music as a major....

Just a side thought here (and I agree that much of this is about money). I wonder if all this will change some opinions on a state lottery if the rug gets pulled out from under the parents who are funding their kid's education. I know that's a tiny percentage of folks who'd be voting on it, but it would include some heavy hitters with reach and influence if/when the lottery comes back around for a vote.

All this arguing and nobody just says what most honest docs will say. “We don’t know”. It is hard to see folks who you respect in the virtual world chain their mule to a stump that they have no idea where the roots are

I quit twitter because of this exact bullshit. Guess I just need to limit my viewing here to straight football threads

I think a lot of us have been saying that all along.

Is if fair to say, "don't jump to conclusions?"

don’t get me wrong. I think there are folks here with open minds. There just seem to be a “few” who are so all fired sure of what they post. They state opinion as fact and just steamroll anyone else. And they seem to only gravitate to certain threads

Some basic (and fairly obvious) factors that play into this line of thinking:

1. 18-22 yr old kids are much more likely to spread the virus in a college campus environment
2. Since the virus has started, the Govt is more likely to shut something down than find solutions to open up when #'s are rising
3. Colleges created a basic infrastructure to go online last Spring... The general structure to move back is already in place
4. No incoming freshman parent with common sense would send their kid to an expensive 4 year college for online classes only
5. University Presidents don't become University Presidents by being short sighted (and not being able to raise, generate, and sustain income). They were well aware of factors 1-4

The general public has no idea of what a lottery can do for education.....unless of course the money is stolen by the politicians and put in their little projects....

Daughter got hugh money from TN lottery...l made going to college actually affordable... and TN did "education only" for lottery profits....

Of course...other states and indian casinos want no gambling in AL....
