When a penalty is called that allows the offense to run another play it's basically "untimed". It's a free play, so to speak.
Which is what bothered me earlier. I was just expecting to see Clemson score on one of those "untimed" plays, which would have let them go into the 4th only down by 2 touchdowns.
I'm not sure the rule, but I think it comes down to coaches letting the refs know that there are duplicate numbers in on the same play. The refs will then differentiate between the two players or they can insist that only one can participate in any particular play? Not sure? Seems to vary at every level.
