🏈 Ballou and Rhea take over UA S&C program

This is the reason for the hire. Saban is looking for a way to lessen injuries as well as upgrade the S&C. The last few years we have lost the National Champ before the season even started. With starting LBs getting injured before the season even started and other key players getting injured during the season.....Imagine if we would have had our full stock of D players as well as Tua healthy all season the last few years. We would have been unstoppable. Saban doesn't like going into the season with key players hurt. Some of these are flukes but some aren't. Could be from incorrect workout rigimine.

Alabama LB Dylan Moses reacts to David Ballou strength hire

Pardon Dylan Moses for having a little extra pep in his step this week ahead of the start of Alabama's spring practice later this month. News of Sunday's pending hire of Indiana assistant David Ballou as the Crimson Tide's new strength and conditioning coach has Moses fired up as the pair share a history together.

Ballou coached Moses, a former five-star prospect per the 247Sports Composite, during his senior season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Moses wrote a message to Ballou on his Instagram story over the weekend, expressing excitement over the chance to reunite in Tuscaloosa:

"Can't wait to work with you my guy! Coach Ballou was my strength coach at IMG my senior year of high scool. He got me right, my man knows exactly what he's doing along with his partner Coach Matt," Moses wrote on his social media platform.

Moses missed the 2019 campaign after suffering a serious knee injury during fall camp. He announced in January he would return for his final campaign in hopes of bringing a national title back to the program.

"After much thought and prayer, my family and I have decided that the best decision for me is to return to Alabama and finish my college education," Moses wrote. "Football is not who I am. It is what I do. Life after football is what I am most concerned about, and I want to ensure I can put myself in the best possible situation to succeed in life, fulfill my goals and make my dreams come true...

"The 2020 season will be very personal to me, and I want nothing more than to finish my Alabama career in style. The program's goal is to compete for championships and next year will be no different. Next season isn't about draft stock or money -- it's about grinding with my brothers and winning another national title."

The Crimson Tide's starting Will linebacker in its base and nickel defenses during the 2018 campaign, Moses recorded a team-high 86 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Losing him before the season along with linebacker Josh McMillon was detrimental for first-year defensive coordinator Pete Golding, whose defense never recovered without their two leaders at the position.

One of the nation's up-and-coming strength coaches, Ballou comes from Indiana, where he played and has served as the Hoosiers' head honcho in the weight room.

“Nick Saban probably already had David Ballou and or Matt Rhea already in mind before this all went down,” BamaOnline analyst Travis Reier said on Monday's Built By BamaOnline podcast. "A lot of these coaches are already thinking a step or two ahead. So look, you’ve got a could of things you’ve got to keep in mind too. This impacts recruiting as well.

“And you know what Alabama has coming up Saturday in Tuscaloosa? The second of its two big Junior Day events. Whereas that may not be a centerpiece type item, you’re definitely going to be showing off that strength and conditioning department aren’t you? Talking about that sports science center, so wouldn't you like to have one or both of these guys in place this weekend? I would guess that’s the hope for the next four or five days.”

Can't blame a guy for wanting to move up in his profession. With us being on the down hill side of Saban's career at Bama, Maybe Cochran feels that he can go to Georgia and reset his time.

While Coch can always get a job in S/C because of how well he did at Bama. Being able to prove himself on the field and possibly move up, is obviously important in the career path he has taken. Best of luck to ya. Thank you for making Bama Great Again.

this ride ain't over by a long shot. we still got plenty of gas left in the tank, we get GREAT gas mileage, and the best driver in the business. this is an endurance race. we 'bout to get some new tires put on so we can go another 100 laps around this bitch.

down hill side? sheeeeeiiiit! we've still got 2 more gears to go before we drop the hammer and leave the rest in the dust.

I for one was very disappointed, upset even, when I heard Cochran was leaving. Even more upset knowing he was going to UGA. BUT, the more I read about the new "science" approach, the more excited I get that we're going in a different, new direction. Just the thought of few injuries is good enough for me, more team speed is icing on the cake.

My son plays high school football, runs track, used to play basketball. He now has a herniated disk (he's 14) because I don't believe that the trainers know what they're doing and they didn't warm them up before workouts. Their idea of warm ups for track, instead of stretching first, was run a lap, then run another, harder. I don't even know if they stretched or anything before the dead lifts that injured his back. The more these guys are educated about movements and keeping it on a personal, customized approach, the better.

I considered the sports science addition to be more of a toy for Jeff Allen that I did what it's become.

Today this (Cochran) story broke it was almost as if a light bulb went off...

Been a cool coaching search to follow.

I think he meant "The day this (Cochran) story broke" and not "Today this (Cochran) story broke"

I think we need to remember that SC wasn't fired and wasn't going to be fired. CNS may have brought someone in to bring a more data-focused approach to S&C, but CNS wasn't unhappy. If there was room on his staff, I'm sure CNS would have tried to fit CS into the role (with some limitations - he wasn't going to be OC or DC). Cochran left for a new role - one that he really doesn't have experience doing. Kirby gave him an opportunity to go in a new direction. By doing that, he potentially could have hurt Alabama. But, CNS is capable of getting the best of the best to replace whoever leaves. Having a Saban pedigree is a tremendous benefit for seeking future roles. Let's see how long it takes before a punt or kick is blocked at UGA.

After an internal review Saban decides there's a new direction he'd like to take the S&C program...but this isn't about Saban being unhappy with the direction the S&C program has had the last several years?
